but the real question is WHY does windoze want you to upgrade??? what are they putting on your pooter that benefits them?? ;)
why would they go to all the expense of creating a series of files for free??
It's pretty creepy when you think that the guberment can already activate the mike on your telephone, whether it be on or off, or the web cam on your 'puter isn't it!

I just read about the army truck swept away in a flood at Ft. Hood. Three were killed, six are missing.
I saw a pic of somebody's land, where their house was on a tiny piece of dry land, surrounded by water. There were horses standing next to the house. They had nowhere else to go. I can't remember what town that one was in. I also read about flooding in Germany. Glad your family is safe. One story said the flooding started in May. Actually it started in March. Then it flooded again in May. Now it is flooding again in June. I don't think I've been this ready for dry weather since I was a kid.

Retic, I am not prepared to face a major operating system change right now. In the future when things have calmed down, I will give it a go.
Stay safe KKay. I'm sorry to hear about the destruction and disasters going on there. {{{}}}

So now the parents of that child who was dragged around by that silverback is being sent death threats.

It's a sad situation, but the public feels that the parents should have been shot instead of the gorilla.

Agreed for sure, it's hard to blame anyone here..... what might be weird now , is that every parent might be putting leashes on their kids at zoo's. So leashed humans, roaming animals

LOL. Some kids should probably be leashed up at home too. :)

Coming from a family of 4 brothers I know from experience we drove mom and dad crazy with our antics.

Like you said, kids are slippery and have a mind of themselves but I can tell you it was different with my folks. There is no way I could if done that when I was a kid, if my old man or mom said stick with me, I would. In fact my dad would of smacked me hard before we would arrived there and told me , "that's just incase you think about doing anything wrong" . It's just a different Era now.

Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk

We got that too. hahaha

Oh yeah, totally different. They were a whole hell of a lot stricter back in the day. And as a result it was amazing how well behaved we were. We knew one step out of line and we were gonna be hurtin'. :)

I don't know about the kids these days, it wasn't like this in the old days. However, they used to say that about us back when we were kids too.

Personally I've always believed that zoo fences are to protect animals from halfwits, not the other way round….Sorry, but in my book, the mother is a d-bag.

True. There's a fine line between having cages completely safety for the animals and still having access to see them.

It's pretty creepy when you think that the guberment can already activate the mike on your telephone, whether it be on or off, or the web cam on your 'puter isn't it!

Big brother is watching us.

Checking in on a short break from unpacking boxes here in our new house.

One nice thing about a move into a new house is that the lines aren't laid to get internets or television for another few weeks, so I don't have to worry about any red x's for awhile it seems. (Although my data usage on the mobile account is definitely reflecting the lack of wifi in the house.)

Hope everyone is doing swell. Bring on the weekend already!!

That's the same CPU I have in my machine , but mine is a desktop , Cinnamon was too graphics intensive to run cleanly on my machine and laptops usually throttle down the CPU speed when running on battery to extend battery life So I would go with Linux Mint 17.1 xfce 64bit . It has support for older CPU's and graphics cards and it's an easy upgrade to 17.3 . Linux Mint by default retains it's graphical stack and Kernel when upgrading , Ubuntu doesn't , that's important when you're running older hardware like ours . After installation make sure you install all updates for 17.1 before you upgrade to 17.3 . This is the version to start with .
Linux Mint 17.1 "Rebecca" - Xfce (64-bit) - Linux Mint

I read an article today that Microsoft seems to be shutting down their phone business. They waited too long and can't get good market share there. They made it too hard for developers to create apps for their phones. No apps = no one wants your device.

On desktops & laptops, folks stay with Windows because... of apps. So apps are money and MS Office is kind of the granddaddy of universal apps. So they give away Windows to keep people using Office, perhaps? After that they go to subscriptions for Windows. Win 8 didn't do well. Win 10 was generally well-received. So they move the herd to Win 10 for free - an OS people would be a little more willing to pay a little each month for.

Linux is free. Mac OS updates are free. No more gouging pricing for the OS. MS still makes money from their server software and enterprise licensing for Office. Also from XBox hardware and a cut of every game for it.

Their search product, Bing, could gain some ground on Google. If people stay on Windows, MS can default to Bing search in the Win settings. No more phone biz means maybe they can cut a deal with Apple for Bing to be default on Macs, iPhones and iPads. They need a big "audience" for Bing. Why?

Where does Google's money come from? Advertising.

So an educated guess might be that stuff is going into Windows to facilitate tracking.

    Big Brother is watching indeed.

In the recent iteration of Battlestar Galactica, civilization reached a point where their tech was dazzling. And it was destructive.

Ultimately [SPOILER ALERT] they gathered up their tech and sent it into the sun.

And then the whole cycle repeated again.

So, BK, what can we say? Biological imperative to build and create? :)

At some point, you and or retic should put the instructions on a thread in this subforum. Start by outlining the information that is needed, then how to load it (pros and cons for the different methods), and other useful info. Otherwise, we'll be coming to you one at a time over the next 12 months and wear yourasses out. I learned this from teaching people Kayfun builds. I finally made a tutorial and just link it now. :)
    Ok , here's a start .

Just give a holler whenever you're ready , Linux Mint usually doesn't have a problem with UEFI , but there's usually a workaround if needs be . Hope it dries up for you soon , all that rain makes it too damd muggy .

    Agreed.

I'm sure someone has already put good tutorials out there and I'm hoping on retic to know where they are :)
There are some , the problem is gonna lie with machine specifics , starting with how to change the boot sequence in the BIOS and going on from there , most tutorials aren't in laymans terms , yet another hurdle to jump , this is gonna take some time to ferret out the info needed .

    CPU ? Isn't that a TV drama about a Hospital ?
And screw RAM, I'm a Ford man. F-150 all the way !

Or, in other words, what language are you speaking ?
    It's computerese... LOL
Papaw, this has probably been answered already, to get System info on Windoz 7 computers go to the programs menu then click Computer and click on the System Properties tab. It shows the Windoz version you're running on top. Under that is the system info starting with Rating, Process, Installed Memory (RAM), etc, etc.

System info will read the Processor Brand, mod number and speed first, then RAM info example:
Processor: Intel Core Extreme CPU X7900 @ 2.80 GH
    Installed Memory (RAM): 1.00 GB

RAM memory should not be confused with Storage memory. You can think of RAM as a room full of exercise machines for your Operating System (OS) and programs (apps) to use. When the room is full, the OS & apps have to wait outside till a machine opens up for it to use. The more room you have the more exercise machines it has and the faster apps can get in and out - they don't have to wait outside as long, if at all.

Storage Memory is space provided on your Hard Disk to store info and programs you want to use later and it's measured in Megabyte (MB), Gigabyte (GB), or Terabyte (TB)

    Hope that helps... ;)

Either way, copying everything you care about to an external HD and leave it disconnected whilst installation is the way to go as things can go wrong while resizing.
Yup, woita is right Papaw, backup your important info i.e., Documents, pictures, music etc. to a separate drive. You may be doing this already, but I know many people don't.

was delivering things today... pretty much useless oddball stuff that Office Depot sells online and then I began to look at ALL of the things that humanity has built, roads, buildings, sewers, signs, stop lights, streets, cars, empty abandoned buildings, useless vehicles on the side of the road filled with potholes... and began to realize that we have way too much stuff..

next time you take a ride thru a city... look ( and I mean LOOK) at all the stuff that has been done, built, assembled and then think about its true purpose and was it really needed???

You are forgetting earth moving, foundation setting, water runoff planning and land-sculpting, etc. If you are in a metropolitan of dense suburban area, everything you see has been touched by man. Old woods and pasture lands are about as close to the real thing left anymore.
