It is apparent to me that too many people skate through life with blinders on. It almost seems like they prefer it that way.

Sadly, many people -- I postulate the majority of people, in fact -- prefer to have others do their thinking for them. Seems to me a sad waste of our most precious of abilities, but such is the way of things.

Truth be told, I get along much better with, and have more respect for, a person who's opinion is the very antithesis of mine, if they've come to such an opinion on their own, than someone who agrees with me completely, but only because it's the opinion someone else has given them. *sigh*

A handful of people at my work that vape are avoiding groups and the smokers area because of the attention. It's like watching someone from the future trying to blend in with their amazing artifact hanging out of their mouth. I have noticed vapers trying to conceal as much of the ecig in their hand as possible, covering any kind of light emitting areas. The ecigs are gaining popularity every day though, hopefully the stigmata wears off soon.

I was out at a bar for several hours last night with some friends and we were on the back patio where smoking is allowed. A few of our friends were smoking, others were out there smoking, I was vaping. Other than one friend ask how the non-smoking was going, no one in the bar seemed to even notice or give me a second look.

Hey fellow Austinite!

I haven't really noticed off hand looks, but then I don't really pay attention. I have experienced the BEST time shopping the other day though!!!! I was able to vape a little in the stores, not enough to emit giagantic clouds of vapor, (I did that outside at the coffee place) but it was enough to help me get my shopping done, for the first time, I didn't forget anything!

Do we have any other Austin folks here? I would love to have/organize a get together for us to chat :)

I'm seeing more and more people vaping here in Austin. I suppose we'll just have to put up with the weird looks and those who think we are a "douche" for vaping until they are more mainstream.... In the mean time I'm saving my life so all is good.

I'm in San Antonio, practically neighbors. I have yet to see anyone else vaping in this backward town!

actually got a pseudo-job invite the other night. was vaping at a bar, wife and friends excused themselves to use the bathroom.

a couple at the next table waved me over, and asked what I was smoking. Explained it to them (starting to sound like a broken record, give the same speech every time). I explained that I made the box mod, they were pretty impressed. Asked what I did for a living, told them I was an electronics technician. Gentleman asked where I worked, to which I responded "Herley Industries." Turns out, he was pretty high up at Northrop Grumman in Baltimore, and told me to come on down there after I'm done with school.

I definitely understand being embarrassed by vaping in public. At one point I was using a modified e-cig made from an old nicotine juice bottle and a film canister. It was humiliating. But you really have to think of it this way: you're no different from smokers in the sense that you need your nic too. The only difference is what you're smoking out of. Basically, be proud. Yes, sometimes we e-cig people need to be discreet, but give an explanation if someone asks you. Besides, the more people you inform, the more people will switch, especially with smoking bans across the country.
Anyhow, good luck. :D

Thank you for this thread. I've been vaping for just over 2 weeks and still feel a little out of place. I don't vape where I used to smoke because I don't think I could stand the smell anymore, and all the non-smokers look at me funny when they see me vaping. I work in a downtown office building with about 2000 people, none of whom are vapers, except me.

I've shown a few interested smokers my Joye 510 and they're "watching" me to see how well I succeed. I keep telling them this isn't a fluke, in the hopes they'll buy a pv already so I won't be the only one anymore!! :)

Another thing that I feel a bit weird about is when other smokers want to "see it in action". I feel so self-conscious having people intently watch me while I vape. It's like having people watch you eat. Oh well, it's all worth it if i can convert a few of my fellow smokers to vaping non-smokers! And if I can't, then oh well - at least I'm saving myself.

Aren't you glad you don't have to run for the elevator any more to take a quick smoke... I love to stealth vape. If I hold it in long enough there is no visible exhale.

i just got back to cali after a business trip to japan. i stealth vaped in the airplane bathroom!!!

we know that these will set off smoke detectors if we blow a huge cloud of vape at it. but i found that if you push the drain open in the bathroom sink, the vape is sucked right out through the drain. got me a little nic in to make it through the 10 or so hours of flying. some did look at me funny for being in the bathroom for like 10 mins but to hell with it, let them guess why it took me so long lol

Wow, that's news to me! I thought that only actual smoke will set off the smoke detectors. If PV's only produce water vapor, then why wouldn't the smoke detectors go off when you use steamy hot water from the sink?

In no way was smoking in public cool. But at least i was mixed in with other smokers when i was smoking cigarettes. Therefore i kinda blended in with them. Now when i vape in public i feel like everyone is looking at me. I can't help but wonder what they are thinking. They probably think i am smoking some illegal substance or something. I don't even feel comfortable around other smokers while vaping. I feel as if i am drawing attention to myself. I am a pretty shy guy and do not like any extra attention.

Does anyone else struggle with vaping in public? Hopefully this will all pass and eventually i just won't give a damn what people think.

YOU ALL NEED TO VAPE IN PUBLIC, because the public needs to know, and be aware that we are using e-cigs which is vapor, NOT SMOKE. The more the public sees us vaping the faster it will catch on in our community's. If you are questioned, please explain what e-cigs are, and how they work, if that is a problem for you then print up some type of intro of e-cigs, and hand it to them. And please do NOT violate your Town, state laws.

some smoke detectors are very touchy, the one i had in my hotel room would start beeping the warning beep is i forgot to close the door when i took a hot shower. i'm not sure how sensitive the detectors are on planes but i'm thinking they will be pretty darn sensitive. a friend of mone said he took a huge puff off his PV and blew it right at the smoke detector and it went off. it might not set off all but it does set off some.

It's registered as MEDICINE in Holland?
That doesn't surprise me at all, considering I'VE been there and seen a BUNCH of legal things that aren't QUITE the norm in other countries... ;)
