I think my doctor is more concerned with the build-up of plaque that nicotine can contribute to. Nicotine can also cause expansion and contraction of arteries (and vessels), which can be a concern when those arteries have begun to harden. I'm 62 and got three stents on my first heart cath and will be going back in soon for another round. I'm being extra careful. But damn, I sure did have to throw out a lot of juice that had nic in it. Most of it was very tasty stuff, too. Ah well, at least it gives me an excuse to have to spend the next few weekends mixing!
I'd say your wakeup call was a pretty mild one; back in March, my stepfather got a similar wakeup call, 3 coronary arteries 95% blocked... which led to a MASSIVE heart attack, and IMMEDIATE triple-bypass surgery. That surgery and recuperation seems to have gone very well, but the places on his legs where the blood vessels were taken to provide the new blood vessels in his chest suffered a terrible post-surgical infection, which seems to be impossible to clear up, it keeps coming back.
He hasn't smoked in nearly 30 yrs, since he had his first stroke (he had a 2nd one later). And even when he smoked, he never smoked more than a half-pk a day.
