Excellent possibilty Sun ! Heated sugary gunk, quite similar in nature perhaps. Here's hoping ...

How did you think of that ?

kinabaloo--went to waste money on going to the Movies last week and the kid behind the concession stand was just finishing up cleaning the gunk off the kettle. I asked him what he uses and he said without this stuff, you would need a blowtorch to clean the kettle. He showed it to me and was going to give me some till the manager came out and said he could not give me any. So I asked what the deal was, and he told me where to get it online, and that that is how they keep the kettles clean and new looking. Said it is the Only thing that works and is not toxic as they go right to popping the pocorn in the kettle and adding the flavorings ---so it is worth a go I think---sure looks like the same residue to me---Sun

I used to work in a movie theater. The popper hase 4 metal arms on the bottom that moves the kernels around so they don't burn. We used to clean it by sticking one of those green flat scrubby spongelike things under each arm, add some hot water and a little cleaner, and let it clean itself. I'm not sure if we used the same cleaner as what Sun is planning on trying, but it took the popper a good 20 minutes of scrubbing itself before it got clean. I hope just soaking it works. Good luck :)

wonder--just like the kettle, I plan on heating this stuff in a pot with the atomizer in it so we will see--I saw how it took the grud off the outside of the kettle in minutes when the Kettle got hot and the inside was clean in about 10 minutes--so we shall see---Sun

I have read A LOT on this forum about cleaning atomizers.... as much as I could and WOW all the different ideas ways people have been trying. So I started thinking, and if this has been already tried/mentioned sorry and disregard this, but what about those denture tablets? I saw a commercial for them last night and thought that might be something to try. It can't be harsh in any way because those dentures go right back in your mouth, but it has to be strong enough to get the crap off them. Just my thoughts.

hma95--Many have tried the denture cleaner and it failed. I think it failed due to its inablility to break apart the type of residue that we are dealing with and the flavoring is just as much a culript as the VG or PG---Sun

I know I've read that people won't try CLR because of the chemicals in it, but a lot of people (including us) us it in our drinking glasses, pots, pans, faucet heads so really what's the difference? On wikipedia it says: Its ingredients include water, lactic acid, gluconic acid, glycolic acid, sulfamic acid, citric acid and surfactants. The product also contained phosphoric acid at one time, but it is now phosphate free. The phosphate free formula is more environmentally friendly, but its effectiveness against some stains - such as rust is reduced.

Just trying to understand and getting in a little "late in the game".

hma95--there is wicking mesh in atomizers that is tough to rinse out unlike a pot, pan, or glass--so the issue goes to one of rinsing SAFELY out the atomizer and CLR has no ligitimate office on this Forum--that is a harsh chemical compound and is not safe to experiment with ---Sun

hma95 - well, the CLA is no less potentially difficult to rinse out than the concentrated phosphoric acid (nu calgon); but even nucalgon doesn't always work so well in difficult cases and its use is just experimental. Both require careful handling as well as extensive rinsing after use.

The car engine cleaner that is sometimes mentioned here is another matter!

Personally, I think the denture cleaner is worth a shot, if done this way: crush one tablet to a powder and put the powder into the atomizer. Then, keeping it open-end upwards. put in a little hot water. After the fizz, rinse out well, dry and prime.

Hi all
got around to disecting the atomizer today, as I said before it had soaked in nucalgon for 24-25 hours the coil looked almost exactly like petes picture (a few posts back) the actual wires were visible but around it was some buildup of the black gunk. In answer to all your questions;
1. the atomizer was tried on 2 freshly charged 901 batteries and also my sd battery
2. all contacts were cleaned on both the atomizer and the battery with alcohol and a q-tip
3. the atomizer had been cleaned with a steam cleaner
As I'm typing this, the coil is once again soaking in the nucalgon just to see what happens.
Btw any reports back on how the .... cleaner worked out?
Thanks
Chuck

I remember reading awhile back about how people said not to heat the coil when it's dry because it would kill the atomizer. I don't really see how that would kill it. Has this theory gone out the window? It's too bad we can pull together some sort of pump to continuously pump a mild abrasive solution through the atomizer, something like toothpaste and water, perhaps. I imagine that eventually the buildup would erode. But yeah, then you have to worry about the toothpaste getting stuck.
