One good site to peruse for info on the history and cleaning of cast iron is: The Wagner & Griswold Society.

I became interested in cast iron restoration several years ago, and at the time that site had the most comprehensive info on dating and cleaning my pieces. I even built an electrolysis tank based on the info and pictures there -on this page. Works great!

I already had a plastic 55 gal. drum, a car battery charger, and some swimming pool PH+ (sodium carbonate). A machinist friend welded a stainless steel rod to a SS grate for me. Scrounged up a few more bits and pieces, and voila! Amazing results - old caked on grease and even rust just "melts" off in a few days. I did all my old, inherited, pieces and many pieces for friends and neighbors since then - griddles, pans, dutch ovens, you name it. The little nooks and crannies in cast iron cornbread molds come out clean as a whistle.

The re-seasoning is the most time-consuming (and touchiest) part, but once you get that figured out - no problem. I use lard (ala Crisco) spread in a thin layer, several applications, in a 400 deg. oven. Too thick and it'll run -then you have to start all over.

Excellent advice and an excellent site! Not that long ago I was looking into care and restoration of CI and I was surprised that there were so many very good sites out there. It's good that so many people are enthused about preserving CI. I just wish it wasn't so heavy...

Geordi's breeder came to the show today. I love that G gets all giggly and oogly when he just hears her voice. Spock never really acknowledged his breeder. Tasha's breeder won't give us the time of day (long story there) and the owner of her father who gave her to me only had her for about 2 days before I got her. We don't see each other often (she lives in Michigan but we do see each other at some shows) but when we do she comes to see Tasha. Tash doesn't really know her. But Chris comes around - Grama! Ooo Grama! Sorry Mom, it's Grama! Very cool.

On another vaping note I showed Chris my Kbox mini. She needs another external battery mod as a backup for her Segelei 30 watt. She doesn't really like the boxiness of the Segelei. She loved the Kbox. Order me one please and I will give you the money! Ordered one tonight (under $25 shipped from Vaper Beast). No tank, but I have a Protank I have never used I will give her. Trying to keep her on simple stuff I can easily maintain. Just gotta get her off the stinkies. She is doing great! Oh, also ordered 4 LG H2s from 101 Vape with the 25% off coupon (BLOWOUT). 2 for her, 2 more for me. Darn smilies on my phone! I hit the censored and can't delete without deleting the whole post and starting over. Please ignore the cussor. :-x:thumb:

Nooooooooooooooooooooo??? Why? It's been working great on my pans and they're well seasoned and practically non-stick. After cleaning with hot water I'll give them a light smear of lard and heat them up for a few minutes and put them away.

Speaking of pots and pans. When we re-did the kitchen I finally got rid of my old non-stick set of pots and pans that were long past needing replacement. I got stainless pots which I love. But you know how they get spotted on the inside bottom? I didn't want to use brillo on them if I didn't have to so Mike tried one of those Magic Erasers on them and they came up shining like they were brand new! Who knew they'd work so well?

I thought possibly you were using a harsh pad or something to get them to shine like a new penny or something. Sorry.......guess I "hollered" too soon. I love seasoned cast iron. There is no other type of skillet that fries chicken or makes cornbread like they do when used as you are using them. Sorry........[/QUOTE]

No problem, I just thought you knew something I didn't about it being bad for the pans. You're right CI is wonderful and deserves just a little attention to remain that way. I've seen some sad cases that weren't, but had no idea at the time that they could be saved.
