Yeah, and the cook always got his wine. He was great, a very good storyteller too.'Specially if ya cook like Justin Wilson... "a l'il wine for da sauce... a l'il wine for da cook!"![]()

R.A. Salvatore Drizzt was and always shall be the baddest ... ever written. Terry Goodkind is excellent as well. Sword of truth rocks, but still, the main man is Drizzt, for fight scene writing and general zen attitude.
Some southern thing, supposedly a vegetable but the way they cook em they aren't super healthy, so better than a vegetable. What's a collard?
Kinda like turnip or mustard greens. Only Collards. They have green ones? Dang ... where've I've been all this time.

Nope, never ... wouldn't even know what they look like ... cooked or raw.
Us northerners don't eat the same foods as you southerners. Grits and collards ain't part of our normal vocabulary.are you pullin our leg or have you really never had collard greens??
Ummm... pardon my ignorance, but what exactly are sparegrass spears?
Over 25 years ago, the Snake Man (a coworker) asked me if I knew what a mater was. I hadn't been off the bus from NJ for all that long, but I knew that this guy's nickname was the Snake Man, so I said: "some kind of snake?" Even in NJ we called tomatoes maters on occasion.Ahhhhh!!! See, that's what I was thinkin' everybody was talkin' about... I really only like it if it's been grilled and still a bit crunchy and then smothered in butter.Thank ya, L'il Birdie... now I don't hafta keep scratchin' my head...
Even canned sparegrass is better than no sparegrass at all, but my unquestionable good taste is questioned frequently. My nomination for biggest difference between fresh and canned: taters of any kind. If we have to go to a brokered convention I'll put the old peas-carrots-corn mix up as my next choice.Never had fresh ay sparygus. They say, dun rite, it'z to kill for.
On da udder hand, had some canned. Right up there with bilge barf.
Fruits too, but for convenience I'll eat canned or frozen. Still better than nuttin.Guess I'd better keep my grubby hands off em too.........
I'll share some of the brussels sprouts though.......
Yuk........no wonder you didn't like them.......canned......fresh is the only way to enjoy most veggies!!
Yer fired.Guyz! I sed I hear'd fresh wuz like nite' n day frum wut I hear'd! Ya gotta pay tension hear!
But agree fresh just about anythin' iz better'n canned. I think the only thing that holds up canned wood be korn.
Agreed. Plus, the plastic bags or waxed cardboard boxes are easier than cans to open once I take them out of the freezer. It can be real hard to get the contents out of them frozen cans.Actually with vegetables that can be froze, I think even frozen beats canned, and that includes corn.
Hire her again so I can fire her again.Yer fired.
Hi neighbor! Mom was a decent cook but the only fresh vegetables we had regularly when I was a kid were corn, maters, onions, green peppers, baking potatoes, celery and lettuce. Mashed taters were always from the dried flakes. I thought they were great because I didn't know any better.I'm spoiled. DH is in the wholesale produce biz, so we pretty much get any fruit, veggies an' herbs known to modern man. I love veggies! Sometimes, tho, I'll ask for a pound or two of somethin' an he brings a five pound box! That's a lot of any veg for two peeps! We try real hard not to waste food, so I end up walkin' door to door like a Girl Scout, but with maters or sparegrass or sweet corn or some such.

I remember buying fresh corn at $1 per dozen ears in the 1960s.I was the only one talented enough to get it on the ceiling while cutting it off the cob. Once she decided she was just done foolin with it, my nephews and I had to take the rest of around the neighborhood selling it for 10 cents an ear.
I tried it with cola thanks to recipes posted on this porch. Purdy darn good.UUUggghhh... now dat just sounds like a waste of perfectly good poke ribs.....
I'd heard of collards and grits but I don't think I ever had either before moving to NC 28 years ago.are you pullin our leg or have you really never had collard greens??
Best fried chicken I ever ate was my grammas, and believe me she didn't have no deep fryer. Pretty sure she fried it in lard, and it was in a skillet. Course the chicken had usually been alive still just a few hours before she fried it, which might have also been part of why it tasted so good.Of COURSE I do.... unfortunately da wife won't lemme have a deep fryer though (cause she knows then I'd just deep fry EVERYTHING!), so I gotta fry it in da deep cast iron pot...![]()
That must be another one o' them strange southern foods, no idea what Hoppin' John is.Thinking about making Hoppin' John tomorrow. One more time before the weather gets warmer & I won't want it.

Sorry Dano, I gotta have some of those peas for my Hoppn' John!Don't forget all the black eyed peas and hamhocks belong to ME! Also sparegrass goes wonderful on a grilled ham and cheese sammich...
It's also good with hollandaise sauce.Asparagus if you ask me. One of the few green veggies I like. Seated in butter and garlic or basted in garlic butter while being cooked on a charcoal grill. Mmmmmm Mmmmmmm!Otherwise known in the Bode household as aspygrassy!

Now that thar is right funny, and of course true. You just gave another great example of taking healthy food and removing the health: spargus and hollandaise. Some southern thing, supposedly a vegetable but the way they cook em they aren't super healthy, so better than a vegetable.
