He invented the ecig. vaping has been around since at least the early 90's & more probably the late 80's. My ex-bf was friends with some people who were modding flashlights back then & we talked about doing it. Tthe ecig is only about 12 years old. The process is much older.
How about turning a piece of trash mech into a flashlight? It is in a safe place, easily available in an emergency. I just trashcanned my piece of trash flashlight in favor of the new reliable.

I like the way you think. I heard he died some years back, or I'd tell ya where to find him lol Nawwwwww wouldn't really, but the though is intriguing. :D

Hahahahaha! Southern Justice, Darlin'... we don't call the po-lease 'round these parts. ;)

I think they have a sorting center in N Houston.

That would make sense. Sometimes we get deliveries in record time... sometimes, not so much.

So how did vaping start? I read where some of the first devices were modified fladhlights but how did someome figure how to do that?

By the time I started vaping almost two years ago now there were lots on the market yo choose from.

Looks like your question has pretty much been covered, but I can tell you that when I started around 7 1/2 years ago, there wasn't much variety in the available options. And even the little cig-a-likes were pretty darned expensive. Two years ago was a great time to start vaping... now would be a wonderful time, too... except for the FDA trying to squash everything.

A Chinese chemist named Hon Lik invented it because he really wanted to quit smoking. I had to look up his name. Here's a good article about him
The inventor of vaping

But yes, that's where the name MOD really came from and really means. Something that you have modified to be a PV. The first ones or at least very early ones were made from flashlights. Also another kind of box that I don't recall the name of, that folks made from parts from a hardware and electronics store, or maybe just hardware.

I still have a little box like that. I made it from parts that I got at Radio Shak, and some salvaged parts from an old cig-a-like. I'd run cartos off of 4 AA batteries for days! Nothin' like pushing 6v through a 2Ω coil in a carto!

I'll have to dig around in my ancient vape drawer to see if I can find it so I can post a pic or two. I refuse to get rid of it, that was the first mod that I ever made. :D

I had to look, cuz somewhere I had saved directions on how to make one, but couldn't find it. I can't remember what they're called, but seems like maybe it started with a P. Not sure though. I'll know it when I hear it

You're talking about a "Puck Mod". I didn't find out about those until at least two years after I made mine... LOL. His were a little different, though. And he actually put out a tutorial on how to build them. Smart guy, he shall forever be remembered in the Annals of Vaping History.

I don't know when it was that he came out with them. He may very well have done it before I did. I just didn't know that it was a thing when I made mine. I just got tired of charging them l'il cig-a-like batteries, so I made something that had batteries that I could swap out. AA batteries seemed like a good choice, because they are easily available and could handle the current limit of a high resistance coil. I could vape that thing for a week straight without replacing the batteries... I think that's what finally got me completely off the stinkies. I was finally satisfied with my vape. :D

didn't know any of it had been around that long. How were they vaporizing the nic then? Did they use juice or something else? That's interesting
I don't remember what he told me. It was around '92 or '93. He knew about it & told me.

Makin a mod doesn't sound all that complicated. However, making a tank before tanks were available... Then again, I would assume they were all drippers.
Yeah there was a run on those flow through teabags and aquarium filter

How'd it turn out? I always thought about making one out of various boxes and whatnot, but just stuck with the 4-bay AA battery pack from Radio Shak. It already had a built in on/off switch. All I had to do was drill a hole for the 510 connection and epoxy it in, and solder in some higher quality wire. What can I say... it worked, and I'm lazy. ;)
