I don't know how many of you are aware that NASA has a mission to the asteroid Ceres in progress. An unmanned probe of course. It is approaching it closest point and I'm not sure if it is going to go into orbit or not. It is however already sending back photos. There is a very bright spot (spots) in a crater that has everyone excited. This is one of those things that definitely make you go Mmmmm. I have attached the high res .jpg and would love to entertain some discussion as to what we are seeing here. I will post more pics as we get closer.

Willie, You keep saying pest and bother and such. I personally am truly glad that you are here more often. I enjoy your company. If we lived closer to each other I can see us solving the world's problems on a regular basis. Neither one of use would get anything done but, they would be some most enjoyable afternoons.

Matt, yes, I know what you are saying .. in fact, during one visit I had to Deb's Place, a few even mentioned it .. I get into a flurry of posts, which, as I've said before, is likely a by-product of my drift toward addiction in some things .. a hint of guilt appears and it creeps into my dialog, not only because I think I'm being a "thread hog", but, I'm yabbering with trivialities .. it's a flaw that is likely rooted in my predominate right-brain (what there is remaining, anyway) and, fortunately, I've not yet sliced off an ear .. however, make no mistake, I do feel the love .. :) ..

One thing that is being researched for asteroids and the pic could be representative of what can be discovered is rare minerals and the possibility of mining them for their ore.

I have it on good authority this is a dumping ground for Tony Montana's remaining stash from the 1980's ..

The spacecraft is named Dawn. It's been in orbit around Ceres since March 6. Five days ago Dawn was 4500 miles above Ceres. On June 6 it will be down to 2700 miles. Ice is my guess regarding the bright spots. My first impression, like Willie's, was that it looked like snow.

Thanks for the heads up, Matt!

I think they are too bright for snow. Depending on if the configuration of the spots matches the reflections from the satellite, my bet would be glass from the formation of the crater.

Glad to hear it. Good Morning to you, Seapeach and to everybody else. Hope you all had a good night's sleep. I woke up at 4 but went back to sleep at 6 for a couple of more hours, finally feeling pretty good.
Ah Matt, so good to read that you're getting a decent amount of sleep now! Keep on feeling pretty good, eh!!

Oh, how sweet they are NOW!

Taking a break from another busy day, but I wouldn't have it any other way than 'busy'..life is good!

Not sure on the ice or glass. Is it reflective or emitting? Curious minds and all that. Let it be emitting and see how fast we put together a manned mission.
Bells, I guess I'm not the only one that follows this stuff. :thumb:

I use mostly Capella flavorings as it is difficult to mess them up. When I started mixing I used only one flavor so I could get to know them individually. Mixing more than three flavors can be a crap shoot. Most DIYers find chocolate and coffee flavors hard to work with. Personally, I would rather follow a recipe instead of "throwing" some stuff together and hoping it tastes decent. There is free software available called EJUICEMEUP. It has quite a few recipes included and it is free.
Sorry Lulu, you were speaking to me and I overlooked it. One or two is where I want to start. I don't see myself becoming a master mixer for a while yet. I don't like chocolate in a vapor and probably not like coffee. I want my coffee in a cup.

I like the glass theory, perhaps some unknown element, maybe a phosphorescent. Seems like it would be something intensely reflective. There is so much ice in our own solar system that we can't see so well, I would tend to exclude that. Then, it could be that the person recording the image was using their microwave oven and it fluked it up.:D

Nah, it's really there and quite bright. It has been in many of the pictures sent back to Earth so far.

Look in the conversation called "re: o-rings". I miss the old PM system.

Got it Matt - the PM that is. Odd I didn't get an alert that the Conversation was updated.

It's photoshopped to generate curiosity to use as justification for getting additional funding for the program.
