As sleep approaches tonight I wanted to send out one quick "Thank You" to all of you on this thread.

Today is the 21st anniversary of my Granddad's passing and every year I use the month leading up to today as a private time of reflection on what he taught me and the example of how he lived and how I might, in some way, better myself by recalling and celebrating his memory.

This year, I've felt his memory quite keenly and I have no doubt that some of this additional closeness has come come from these simple pages that are filled with so many tiny reminders of my Granddad. In these posts I see his kindness, his humor, his sense of honesty, his quiet dignity and his deep devotion to people. I see his horrible puns, his potent Irish eloquence and his fierce determination in the face of his sometimes faltering health.

I have been awed and moved by nearly all of you at some point and that is something that I treasure... Here, it seems, you all are holding the line as some of the last, best parts community.

My Granddad would have liked this thread. He would have been at home here.

So thank you back porchers.
Thank you for populating this little corner of the internet.
Thank you for helping me rid myself of some subtle prejudices.
Thank you for sharing your fellowship with me.

And mostly, thank you for simply being who you are.

I went to bed when the yawns hit, even slept for about an hour or so, then the kidneys kicked in and now I'm awake. Going to give it another try in a bit. Deb sorry your still up. I always say goodnight but, sometimes I don't see your reply till morning but, I DO see it and appreciate it. ☺

Sent while sitting on my busted ..... Stay off the ice if you can't skate. I can't and didn't.

yeah I'm the same way. I usually stay on til my back screams and says get off NOW!!!! So I generally say g'nite and I'm gone, so usually see replies the next day. I feel a little bad if folks are saying g'nite, but I do see it the next day and appreciate it then.

We now have 6 inches of melted snow on our lawn. Please let it be warm and dry for a few days!

Sleeping time for me. Good night, Matt. Good night, Doodles. Good night, Bells. (And good night, everyone else!). Sleep well!
And Goodnight from NBC News.

Yikes! I've got 10 pound sledge hammers, 2 foot pipe wrenches to name a couple of things I consider 'muscle' tools. I sure don't plan on ever using 'em again - but dang to part w/ them - they've been around so long they're part of the family.

Well, yes, there's that. But, even though all your house plumbing is plastic, worked with a hack saw and glue, you might need those 24" wrenches for something. Some day. And the 10 pound sledge? Might want to go to a halloween party as Thor.

I might have ask before, what did you do? You weren't a snipe was you?

And what's wrong with being a snipe??

Not as common in the US as some other places, but I've heard it many times: flautist, pronounced "floutist". Too snobbish-sounding for most of us. If ya plays da flute, you's a flutist. (But what's a piccolo player? A piccolist?)

Nah. A piccolo player.

Or maybe a piccolini.

Well, many of us here have been around long enough to realize that being who you are is one of the big things to learn in this life, and about life. And I think you're well on your way :)

Ah-ha! I dearly hope that means spring is on the way for all y'all. (<--- I can learn)

I say it is. Th red buds are blooming, crepe mrtyles, too. That's a tulip tree in front of my patio. And my amarilys are coming up. Kolanches are startin g to bloom in the house so they are readly to go outside. I'm picking up a hummingbird feeder for migration this year which should start any day now. We ar high 60's to low 70's during the days this week, and high 50's at night pretty much. We usually have one more cold snap in March, then that's it. But the signd are all around. I can't wait for my mockomg birds & hummers to come back! I caught a hummingbird fight on video last fall during migration. i was sitting 3 feet away while they slugged it out. There ar 4 hummers going after it.

Do they 110v power. You pay to ship I have a top of the line craftsman digital radial arm saw I think I'll give him. Accurate to 100th of an inch, used about 4 times. Taking up space.

The standard electricity is 220v, but we use transformers to throttle it down to 110v. Thanks for the offer, but that would be a little large to ship. I mostly send only hand power tools - portable and easy to add to a care package.

I was thinking, (I know strange for me) . If we were donating it to an organization that helps folks over there and could prove it maybe I could talk the folks at Operation Blessing into shipping it over there for us. They're home based here in Norfolk and that's what they do, hurricane relief and such. We also have a large, Philipino population here that are actively involved sending stuff to and supporting programs in PI. Could they use it? I'll have to look at the manual but it probably could be just rejumpered for 220. It easily could be broken down a bit and strapped to a pallet for shipping. Just thinking out loud. It's beginning to sound like a lot of work actually!
