For electronics (and everything else) I'm usually in the "use them until they don't work for what I'm trying to do" camp. The only reason that I'm fairly up to date now is the fire, and the nice young man who checked out the electronics for the insurance company. He pretty much just went through and said that none of it could be expected to work, at least for long, what with the smoke and the water. And he threw in some old monitors and printers that, to be honest, weren't working much to start with.

And, while I'm usually painfully honest, I didn't even feel guilty, since the insurance adjuster had been really chintzy about the books. And I was right about the books, since even with multiple times in a little tent with the ozone generator, and a lot more care with that and careful and lengthy airing out than their cleaning company would have done, the books still smell like smoke.

So we got to start over with computers, printers and extra monitors. I did a lot of research, and laptops were by far the best buy, even compared to building desktops from scratch. Then I researched the laptops, and ended up with the Acer (in part because I needed the touchscreen) and the Lenovo ThinkPad.

With my hand problems I can't use the phone for anything that involves typing. In fact the only reason that I moved up to a smart phone was seeing my daughter use the satellite map functions to get us unlost from really obscure country roads with only one small error. And I use the phone for reading when I don't have the tablet with me, and I do have an app that looks like it will be very helpful for keeping track of too many meds on different dosing schedules. I'd just gotten that before the ankle fiasco, so I haven't had much chance to use it, but it promises to ring annoying alarms for each medicine dose until I tell it that I took each dose. And to track when I need which refills.

Okay, I think my spunky spurt is over. I did the car thing and then daddy wanted to go to Sam's with me to get gas. We walked around and bought $46 of healthy eating. Didn't get much. If it is healthy. . . it costs more.

Came home and did all the trim push mowing so daddy wouldn't do it. It started raining on me but I got finished. Just so happens. . . I won the wet t-shirt contest also. heehee Of course, I was the only one that got wet. But it feels good to git-r-done.

Loved the turkey burgers. Just put garlic, pepper and worcestershire sauce. Put it in a pan with just a drip or two of olive oil. It was daddy approved. I bet it would be even better on the grill. I will definitely buy these again even if they are a little over a dollar a patty.

Hope everyone has had a good day and evening hugs to all that want em'.

You be careful with all this healthy food eating Toots..your perky busoms will shrink and then what'll the toothless guy have to grin about?!

hmm - don't know which of those you got ... but I would of gone another $30 for the Pentium over the Celuron and then going there ... add another $30 for the external optical drive.
I did the extra for the Pentium processor but didn't do the optical drive.

Ain't that the truth. Over the last year I've checked into special offers from Verizon to upgrade our phones. Always turned out to be $500+ dollars to get 2 new ones. Then on Father's Day our daughter told me about a Father's day sale @ Verizon. I could hardly believe it was real coming from Verizon but we got 2 new iPhone 6's for $100. I can handle $50 per phone.

Don't remind me! My injured knee reminded me for almost a year after that sojourn.

Me too -- I don't like upgrading computers. I get them setup the way I like and use them as long as I can.

After too many years of supporting and maintaining Microsoft desktops and enterprise servers - I broke the bank and bought a couple Mac Laptops when we retired. Was just looking for a change and not wanting to think about compatible dll's again in my life. It took a couple months to get used to it - but I'm happy with them. In 3+ years I haven't had an application or update fail to install properly, don't run any anti-virus s/w and never been hit with an attack, nor had to go into the registry to manually remove garbage left over when a de-install failed to work properly. I'm just a dumb user now and like it.
Amen to that Brother Mike!:p I used to have to provide tech support to all my friends but, not having a Windows machine for over 20 years or so I can honestly say I don't know poop about the software side of PCs. I do know I could still go up to Newegg or Tiger Direct or such and order parts and build one though. :rickroll:

Well, got my first puter in the mid 80's. Which was my last puter. Been building them ever since. Which is why the Mac doesn't appeal to me. Just too slow and clunky. Now, we iz all different and that's my opinion for me. Obviously YMMV.

When I give information that I gain from perusing my online CR subscription, I have no vested interest.. just trying to help.

Neither of the Toshiba Satellite C55 models given quite low ratings by CR is the same as the Toshiba Satellite C55 model that's being sold by Office Depot for $200. It's just that the two that were rated were both noted for being particularly slow, even when compared to other computers with the same basic configuration (processor speed and type, RAM amount and type, etc.)

This recommended laptop with 15.4" screen is available new for $400. At the time that CR rated it the lowest price they'd found was $600. Yes, I'm aware that $400 is twice as much as $200 but if I was spending my own dough (as opposed to making a suggestion to someone else about spending THEIR dough), I'd find the difference worth paying if I was able.

Amazon.com : Dell Inspiron 15 3000 15-3543 15.6" Touchscreen LED Notebook - Intel Core i5 i5-5200U 2.20 GHz - Black i3543-3251BLK : Computers & Accessories

I'm not often able to re-sell stuff to recoup a high percentage of my initial costs. I might well look at things differently if I found that to be a frequent occurrence, but I more or less view computers as items that I am purchasing for myself with no hope or expectation of resale.
this is the one I got
Amazon.com : Lenovo G50 80E30181US 15.6-Inch Laptop (AMD A8, 6GB RAM, 500GB HDD, DVD-SuperMulti Drive, Windows 8.1) : Computers & Accessories
not only is it less expensive by $20 than I paid, but since it has an AMD processor, you avoid the problems with Intel processors.

Matt, da largest ones are XL off-da-rack. A couple may fit your canine.

Dave mentioned washing buttoned up shirts. I'll add dat if ya have imprinted shirts, such as my aforementioned HGs, turn da printed side inside. They'll last at least twice as long before fading out!

OK, fer my sanity's sake I'm takin' a break. Hope to catch ya'll when I'm less frustrated...
