I've always heard that protected batteries are recommended in mechs, since otherwise there's nothing there to shut it down in the event of a fault. Or use one of the pop in fuse units. While I don't use mechs, like my VV/VW too much, it sounds like a safer way to go.

And it's only wrong if it blows up in your hand?

Sounds awfully confusing to me. If you are not trying to get sub ohms, is it ok to use unprotected batteries in a sigelei #19 or should you always use protected in a mech? Just wondering if I was doing something wrong. Thank you for your help.

By 'unprotected' if you mean 'IMR' type batts - yes they are perfectly fine to use in a mech mod. Technically 'IMR' batts aren't 'protected' but they are built with a 'safe' chemistry to avoid melt downs so in reality they are 'protected' too, just in a different way.

back before "safe chemistry" batteries came out, like IMR and some of the newer hybrid chemistries, protected batteries were recommended.

now the IMRs are considered safer than the protected one, because the protection is just a little circuit inside the battery that can and does fail. once that circuit fails, you may have an unsafe chemistry battery.

safe chemistry batteries is all we should be using nowadays, especially in mechs. i only use my older protected ones in VV/VW devices, or a mech with a fuse or a Kick, but i will never buy another protected batt.

Hi back atcha, russell. Welcome to da front porch!

I see you're three months into vaping. Ain't it great! How did ya get started?

Wife wanted me to quit stinkies, so we went to a b&m, got ripped off, got started, did research, a lot of it, spent less on better stuff, now im going strong.

Geez - Xavier, be careful out there. When messing with sub-ohms and and heavy guage kanthal like 26g, you need to make sure both your mod and batteries can handle the amp load you put on it. It might not have been a 'bad' coil, you just might have overloaded the Ego-T - they're not really meant for low ohm vaping yet alone sub-ohms. I'm assuming 0.0Ohms, was a typo, what did you finally wind up with.

R2C2, the only advantage is for the cloud chasers using mech mods. It allows them to push the limits of the batt to higher and higher watts. For example, a 1.5Ω coil at 3.7volts puts out 9watts (drawing 2.5amps) and a .5Ω coil would be 27watts (drawing 7.4amps). It's that nasty 'amps' thingie' you have to be careful about to not overload the batt. Decent electronic mods - have built in protection - to not fire beyond a certain amp limit to protect 'you'. Typically that level is around 3 to 5 amps depending on the mod. Mech mods let folks push the limits as there's no 'electronics' to act as a safety valve.

You're right Mike

My intention was to create(or recreate) a simple single coil for my kanger, period. My mistake was to use a thicker gauge instead of the proper 34g which would require less wraps. On the ECig forum one guy explained this to me. He stated you would need about 7-15 wraps for a 26g to work right. and true, once I used the Kanthal calculator it made sense. I followed all the details and explanations found online, particularly those of PBusardo's rebuild tutorial to the letter, and still ended up with 0.1......and no...not a typo...kept getting 0.0 on my Vamo 3..but again, my wraps, the wiring being straight not touching any metal inside, proper positive/negative..etc...I know Im missing something but what it is I have no idea...

waiting for my 34g Kanthal....need to learn to properly wrap this gauge...if you know on this forum any good threads or online on wrapping this 26g please link me up....

As to Sub-ohming,that was not my initial intention either...most kids here in the vaping scene of Miami actually are into it, not me. I am only searching for that elusive simple 1.8Ohm coil....Lollll

happy Saturday y'all

Yikes! Not nice about your experience w/ the B&M but much nicer to hear you've been smoke free for 3+ months - CONGRATS - and welcome to the porch.

It sounds like you have a short somewhere. Could be a bad rubber grommet insulator on the bottom. One thing to remember when folks talk about the "number of wraps". One wrap around a pencil will not be the same as one wrap around a toothpick! The total length of the wire is what determines the total resistance of your coil. Good Luck!

One of the reasons why I am not into rebuilding coils. I know that I would have difficulty getting out of the sub-ohm realm.

Completely agree...

I'm not going to even start the time during my first marriage when I wanted to explore woodworking....lMAO!!!!
Our marriage was satisfactory during the woodworking phase. It was all downhill once he got into the drag-racing phase. I don't even want to talk about when he abandoned that for his brand of religion.

I would like thank all who have read and shared in this thread. I have spent my entire adult life trying to quit smoking. It was not until I found vaping that I found a way to become smoke free. This has been a journey that has been a long time coming. It is comforting that there have been so many good folks before me and hopefully many, many more to follow. I feel like even though we haven't met, we are all friends along this road. Why not share our thoughts and experiences?

Welcome Russel. Sorry to hear you got ripped off. That's not nice, especially if you want repeat customers! So, you did your research, and what device did you get that has allowed you to be cig free since Oct 15? Are you getting your juice from that B&M?

huh? you mean some people get into vaping without initially getting ripped off?

i always thought that was the price of admission...

Some of us were lucky enough to find this forum before we bought anything. I'm still very grateful to the nice people who helped me figure out what would work best for me. I bought my vv3s and am still happily using them.:vapor: Now toppers, that's another story.
