After taking it all apart and rinsing under hot running water, I "wiggle" the chimney off the head so I can see the coil. You need to remove the "flavor wick" to see the real wick and coil. (I find the flavor wick is usually good for the trash can, and replace with cotton yarn when putting back together.) You'll probably see some crud and not the tiny wire turns of the coil. That's the gunk we all talk about. Dry burning will get rid of that. Set your device to about 3.8 volts to avoid popping (burning out) the coil, and pulse away until all the gunk is gone. How many times to pulse? Depends on how badly it's gunked. Then rinse again.

Since you have a spare (or more!), you can set it aside to dry overnight. In a hurry? Go ahead and reassemble. Just keep in mind that the first few draws will be mostly water vapor, no juice. Won't hurt a thing.

To reassemble, lay a piece of wick on top of the coil, like the original flavor wick. Put the chimney back on and trim the wick. Done.

You can buy silica wick - Kangers come with two 1 mm strands for flavor. Or use cotton yarn, cotton teased out of a cotton ball or swab, lots of organic material to choose from.

hey gang... how's thangs... I wanted to ask about this, since I'm going to attempt this today.

I don't knit, sew, or any other domestic thing except cook -- where do I get cotton yarn? And please, don't tell me to go buy it -- a) I'm here at home with no vehicle, and b) any money we don't need right now for food, HAS to go for finding some kind of e-juice I can stand....

Could I just unravel a cotton sock or something? When you say, from a cotton ball or swab... well there must be more to it than just grabbing some fluff and throwing it at the coil -- what do I do to it, to make it a "wick"? I know my noobness is irritating, but I really don't have a clue about this stuff, never done it, never seen it, have no earthly idea at this point what a wick even looks like -- what do I DO, to make cotton fluff into a "wick"??

If you keep the tags on your washcloths (or facecloths LOL) find a white one, check it for 100% cotton. Trim a 1/8 X 3/8 inch piece off of it (this will work especially well if you have frayed one) and use that.

It's best to get organic cotton balls. You don't want to vape dyes or other chemicals. Upside they are cheap 3-4 bucks will last you for years. If I were stuck i may use q-tip cotton. If you do you want to boil q tip first

I've seen several videos on Utube where they rebuild and use cotton from a cotton ball. You just take a little piece and stretch it out and roll it into a skinny log, then push it thru the coil. I'm pretty sure PBusardo has a video on it and GrimmGreen does, too. As I understand it, if it isn't sterile cotton, you need to boil it first.

YouTube IS YOUR FRIEND!:)

Hopefully, someone with experience in this stuff will chime in, since that's all I know. Sorry.

Need a builder over here----->

Ok, I watched the video about disassembling and cleaning... one thing i wanted to ask (I can't go full-screen with the video or it the image just stops dead, runs out of video RAM, so I have to keep the video small) -- when you put that chimney back onto the coil.. it just goes smack down on top of the flavor wick?

Like I said... "here at home with no vehicle"... I'm not walking 3 miles to walmart!!

I guess I can use a qtip, we got tons... but boil it??? wouldn't that melt the plastic/dissolve the paper stick of the qtip???

Ok I was going to ask about this too... I have some 100% cotton cloths I use here at my filling/cleaning station, and they're white... so I could just pull out one of the strands of the cloth? They're easily frayed, I could get one strand pretty easily.

So, would I just put it in a bowl and pour some boiling water on it? Or try to find something long enough so I can hold it IN the bowling water? Got some needle nose pliers but I guarantee THEY are not sterile, the tweezers aren't long enough to hold something in bowling water for any length of time without burning myself...

I know this all seems simplistic to you "old hands" at this, but I have never done this!!! Trying to figure out how to make it work without hurting myself!!!

As noted above... I WATCHED THE VIDEO!!! It doesn't cover, how to make a wick, how to boil cotton without burning myself, or any of those details!!!

It's also a very small image which I can't enlarge without the video stopping dead, so I can't tell if he puts the chimney right down on top of the flavor wick!!

Good question. I would boil water then drop a few q tips in for 10 minutes. Rinse and pat dry or maybe throw in a dryer with a towel. Once that's done and they are dry pull off the ends. I have never done this so I'm not speaking from experience.

Ok I thjink we have some plastic-stick qtips so I can do that... since I'd be grabbing the stick part with the needle nose pliers, no matter if the pliers are sterile. THX!!!!!

Geez don't hurt yourself. One more thing cotton can be added from 2 ends of q-tip. So it doesn't need to be one continuous piece just a FYI. I can post a pic later when I rewick my kfl tonight if you like. It will be about 7 hours from now.

Oh, and I got the 2nd new Virginia I ordered. Once I get this coil business sorted out, I can try the new stuff, see how it compares to the GOOD virginia.

And got the go-ahead to order some stuff for DIY on making some good virginia myself... although I might need to spend that money on a new 5-pk of coils, god knows. wish there was an emoticon for "tearing out hair."

Andria I just place the cotton (ball or yarn) in a small pan on the stove and boil it for 20 minutes changing the water once in the cycle.. I don't hold the cotton in any way. Next time you are at Wal Mart look for organic cotton balls or what I prefer 100% Cotton, White Sugar and Cream or Peaches and Cream yarn used for knitting etc. one skein will last you a lifetime:laugh:

Also I just boil a small amount at a time as it doesn't take much of either material to make a wick.

It's all good and part of the learning curve. Your asking the right questions and well on your way. It can be a little scary at the start but after you complete one or two you will be rocking and rolling.

I think you would do better with just a tiny piece-- it might take ten of the strands to equal what I use of the P&C. I use pliers around the widest part and needle-nose to pull the chimney off. To replace the chimney on top of the flavor wick I usually use my fingers, with a final sending it home with the pipe part of the pliers.
