Gawd, I wish I had good eye-sight!

I've been attempting to build on my kayfun for the last hour or so. I gave up several times and threw it aside. Well, I didn't throw it hard. I just tossed it onto the bed. It's an ugly coil. My eye-sight IS good enough to know that much. But, it's working, for the moment.

I had better get some major practice building coils. Either that, or start stocking up on cartos. Maybe a couple thousand or so!
Keep trying! You can do it! I did great on my first one on an 18g needle, but it was hard on my hands. Got a coiler & had to try several times to get a good one on that. Go figure! I still have to take my glasses off & get up close, tho.

I'm sure I will. Love my KF3.1's and the KFL's appear to be the same tank without the huge air chamber.
Really though, two of the KFL are for my BIL & SIL. They bought some FT KF3.1's and have had problems with them leaking. I looked them over and was unable to find anything wrong that would account for the leaking. The one thing I failed to do, was do one of my builds on them. From reading some articles on KF leaks it very well could be my BIL's builds that are the problem. He tends to build a sloppy coil with a lot more cotton wick than I do. I've never had a issue with any of my KF's leaking so the build thing never crossed my mine while we were visiting them last month.
Gotta be the build. I use very little wick in mine, well away from the juice channels, just touching the deck, they wick great.

What's strange is that I had no trouble building a coil for my Sophia. I had been so worried about it because the Sophia is SO small. But, it was easy!

yeaaaah..... I will wait for a QUALIFIED person to weigh in on this one. In the mean time, I don't vape things with either of those in them... don't like them personally... so I'm probably OK either way.

That's a great idea. As soon as I can actually wrap a decent coil.

I do have a lighted magnifier, just not the batteries to make the light work. But, I sat next to a lamp. It worked ok once I found my mouse pad so that the magnifier didn't keep moving around while I was trying to use it.

I bought these to wrap coils on. But, I haven't used them yet. I used a little screwdriver instead.

Every time I wrap a coil is like the first time. It's always a shock that it's so hard to see and to hold onto all the parts all at once. I've only wrapped about a dozen or dozen and a half coils so far. And, that's over about a year's time (maybe more).

I'm easily frustrated. And, since my finished coils are, at best, mediocre, I'm always left rather uninspired to keep trying. Even in the middle of wrapping a coil, I often have to stop for a while. Often? No, pretty much always!

Off to sort my o-rings onto pins.
Excellent idea!! I had forgotten about folks doing this years ago.

If you can wick after you wrap the coil, definitely use the kuro coilers!! I use the coil master, and it makes super coils really easy! sorry you're having a rough time. I got a lighted headband and that made it way way easier as well. Now I just need some dime store magnifying readers if they make em strong enough.

Use the Kuro coiler! I couldn't build a good coil until I started using a coil jig. The only thing that can go wrong is if you press too hard while making the coil, which can cause overlap. But after your fingers learn how much pressure to use, that possibility is eliminated. You can do it with your eyes closed because there's nothing that you have to be able to see when making the coil.

Were you able to do that on multiple occasions? I'm thinking maybe you just got lucky if it was only once.

See, she agrees! Just for the heck of it I'm going to try to make a coil around a wick using my CoilMaster. I'll report back on whether it worked.

Pssst... they are now called dollar stores. :(
It's the five and ten cent store. Or at least that's what we called it in the 1950s.

I also take my glasses off for close work. And I have a couple of those big lighted magnifiers on an arm for working on bitty bitty stuff.

I've only tried the Kuro Coiler once. My coil overlapped. But, I know it takes a little practice.

The difference is probably that the Sophia uses a ceramic cup and takes NR-R-NR wire. A totally different animal. And, the hardest part of building a coil is attaching it correctly and wicking it.

That's where I was running into problems with my Kayfun. Trying to hold onto the base, the coil, and the screwdriver, while also keeping all that and the magnifier all lined up so that I could see what I was doing.

Maybe I just need to learn how to take better advantage of my Helping Hands Magnifier thingy. So far, I don't know what to do with any of it except for the magnifier part. I wonder if those clamps are of any use in rebuilding or if I should just take that part off.

Mounting the coil onto the deck is the trickiest part for me too, what with keeping the coil level and in the center while holding the deck, the coil, the mandrel and a screwdriver all at the same time. Probably would be easier if I used something to hold the deck while I did it.

I use reading glasses, sometimes over my regular glasses because of astigmatism. I keep my base screwed into the ohmmeter. I don't hold onto the coil itself, I use the screw that I wrap my coils on to move the legs into position. Except for tightening the post-screws, I could do it one-handed.

I never saw any wick getting into the air intake but kept reminding him to keep a 2mm spacing between the coil and the air intake. But I have definitely wondered if his over abundant wick might be allowing small strands of cotton to drip juice into it.

ETA Yes we did rebuild the tanks with new orings throughout and new insulators as well.

Yep, set too low can cause leaks, in addition to getting wick into (and perhaps ven just too close!) to the air intake.

Even in the middle of wrapping a coil, I often have to stop for a while. Often? No, pretty much always!

If by that you mean stopping winding, that's going to affect the tension.

Mount the base on something solid so you don't have to hold it. I drilled a hole in a small piece of wood and jammed a thread adapter into it, then put the coil base into that. Or, in the case of KFs, the KF base. Keep the coil on the screwdriver until mounted. And it can help when removing the driver from the coil to spin it slowly as you pull it out.
