Here's my method for wicking w/ rayon (and KGD) for building KFL-lites, Russians and KFL4's.

Rayon I make as snug as I can w/o distorting the coil, it's on the tight side. Cotton just enough to fill the coil w/o being tight. Rayon, I snip about 1/2 the thickness of the tail protruding from the coil on each end.

(these pics look like I'm using KGD before switching to Rayon)

I then juice up the wick and press a needle into the 'corner' of the deck.

Press it hard enough to leave an indentation in the wet wick

Then gently lift the wick w/ the pin and cut it off at the indention left in the wick.

Then tuck the wick into the corner of the deck

Put it altogether and enjoy the vape. No dry hits, no flooding, no leaking.

Nice visuals, Mike.

But I'm too darn lazy!

That, and I'm pretty picky on my wicks, have some flavors that are really gunkers, but I love 'em. So rewicking after 2 tanks for those.... yeah, too darn lazy! My way, just a couple minutes (or less) and I'm ready to fill.

I probably only rewick any given RBA every couple weeks and it takes me about 10 minutes to clean the coil and rewick - not bad. But then I'm maintaining about 10-12 toppers between me and Janet - so I'm usually doing a couple per week. Try not to get them all at the point they need redoing at the same time. All our juices are clear, no real problem gunkers. I'd have to really like the juice if I had to rewick every couple tanks.

I watched many videos on kayfun wicking and tried having all the wick stick out the chimney and it didn't work very well with the rayon since you have to over stuff the coil a bit and have too much tail.
I make kinda fan of the wick straight out then trim off the corners and maybe some off the top to loose some of the bulk. Then juice my wick and place it against the back wall like a waterfall, having no rogue hairs in the threads before I put the chimney in place. You'll see in the pic how I make a V with tweezers and if still too much bulk, remove some of the rayon from the middle to make a nice V shape. I have a pointy dental pick to get down the bottom so there is no wick anywhere near the channel to cause a leak. With wicking my kayfuns this way I very rarely have any problems with my kayfuns due to leaking through the air hole unless it tips over and shifts the wick inside in just the right way.

Regarding KF wicking...

First, the comments about rayon needing to be tight are dead on.

I do mine a bit different than you, Alter. I do put the vaporization chamber on, and push the wick ends through it as it goes. Snug that down, then cut the wicks about 1/4 inch above the lip. Tuck gently down on both sides of the terminals, making sure no strays are over the coil or air intake. I don't bother with your V notch. At that point, I'll put a few drips of unflavored on the wick, usually two drops on each side, and one on the coil, then do a final test fire. If good, on goes the chimney and tanks. Another drop on the end of the chimney before putting the cap on, to lube and seal the O-ring there.

Cover air intake(s) and test draw for vacuum.

Now at 11 KFs (hey, I couldn't resist that last sale of them for $10!), and the only times I've ever had leaks have been due to bad o-rings, usually either where the chimney goes through the cap or the bottom tank ring.

As long as you don't have so much wick that it really compresses into the juice channel, shouldn't be a problem. Cutting off 1/4" above the chamber rim is just about perfect.

Quoting these to keep them all together for next time I rebuild on my Kayfun. Thanks, everyone.

GREAT idea Mike with the rod to make the indentation to cut the wick. Leaking kayfuns are to do with wicking over the juice channel hole and very rarely the leaking from o-rings , that can come by the wick shifting just from being in your pocket or having your PV tip over and make that deathly sounding THUD or just to much wick. I just made sure there is going to be no wick anywhere near that juice hole if my kayfun gets banged.
You have to trim a fair amount of rayon away, you don't really need dense tails. It wicks very well with 1/4 to a 1/3 of the rayon removed from the tails, as long as the ends are touching the bottom of the deck.
I get 3+ weeks off a 1.3ohm spaced twisted 30 gauge coil build at @ 10 mls a day in my kayfun, I use my provari daily so I have to build to fire the provari. Vaping DIY juice, my Hangsen Highway, Desert Ship and/or No5 with a bit of tobacco absolute is my vape nirvana. I can't believe how clean my Hangsen DIY juice burns compared to commercial juices I have, even after all that time the coil has a few crusties and the wick is still in nice shape but nothing burnt, cocooned shell you'd expect to see.

DH, congratulations on the coil making journey! You can teach me once you have it down pat. ;)

The petition is now up to 34,080. :D

We were just put through the ringer in CA as far as a slew of bills went. On the final day, they never were brought up for vote. We think we are okay until at least January but since these were special session bills, we aren't 100% sure. Oh, the magical ways government works.

Perfect combination of topics, coil-building and politics. One is the reason that we need the other.

Hi - welcome to the porch Skitterpop. At least this is the first time I remember seeing you here. Hope you join the group.
Thanks for the welcome Mike. I read the porch all the time but I do not post much as I am still on a steep learning curve 8 months into the vaping journey.

I have learned a great deal reading the posts here. I am a Kayfun addict and am getting them working fairly well. I have tried to branch out and bought a Squape r, did not work for me but will experiment with it this winter. After buying a Magma I no there is no dripping in my future. These lungs are to old and tired for that much vapor.

Sad, but true.

Of course, the potential for a better vape at less cost is also a factor, as is not having to rely on vape mail for coils if something goes south in the inventory department

As said, that's (part of) what we're here for :)

Post your questions and problems. We will be glad to confuse you.

AND help you spend your $$!

I suspect that, no matter what your hardware someone here has used it and fumbled through that same curve - and often with help from others at that time.

The Guardian looks pretty cool. What did you plan on using on it?
I use my other one on Davide atomizers... probably the same with this one, and the X65 will go into rotation with my current one. I mostly use KFv4 and Davide atomizers

I've been vaping 2 1/2 years and been revamping my attys almost right from the get go. Within the first couple weeks I had a poorly coiled CE4 I was revamping to make better. I learned all I know from ECF, Youtube and still learning. I've been through all the wick phases (silica, ekowool, mesh, cotton, hemp and now rayon). I have the drippers but very rarely use them since I can build and enjoy a top shelf vape off my kayfuns. My wife still uses the protanks that I build hemp fiber coils for her. She has forgotten what a dry, metallic hit was.
I too am a kayfun addict and its going to be hard for me to give them up for something supposedly better just to revert back to kayfuns.
The next step I waited way to long to take was DIY juice. I like many have spent oodles of money on juice that is crap, playing Russian roulette with customs or finding juices that are just plain sub standard. I really enjoy the Hangsen Tobacco concentrates, they are an unbelievably great vape. I have no trouble getting nicless concentrates, PG or VG over the border just tell them its for soap making. I do pay more but I source my nicotine in Canada but the few extra bucks saves a lot of customs anxiety.
I'm totally self sufficient now vaping wonderful builds with great DIY tobac juices, wife is happy with her gear and juice....vape nirvana. :)

But, my eyeballs are not needed to do that.
one tiny distraction and I lose count with my eyes open!  but mostly my comment was just to pick on ya some. lol

Well, I'm mad at my Taifun GT-T V2 right now. It's sitting in the corner right now.
you're doin great hun! hope your taifun isn't broken. But jup, sometimes they do need to just be put in the corner so they can think about what they did!! (or didn't do)

I watched many videos on kayfun wicking
see below

Nice, I have not tried Rayon yet but will give it a go. Will use your method, thanks.
welcome to both of you!!!

Isn't it great to be self sufficient! I waited way too long to start DIY'ing too, but I'm there now, that's all that matters! It's great to look at a sale ad, and not want anything, and to not have to spend money on stuff. That's great y'all are both so contented and doing so well!!
