Where I live in Iowa we really got luck yesterday...no snow before the high winds and extreme cold hit. Much of the state had blizzard conditions. You know when I went to Des Moines on Saturday to babysit I realized how low the river is and we don't have much snow in the ground in central Iowa. It's been a very long winter with frigid temps but I'm afraid we might be looking at drought this year..which is always bad. Hang in there and I sure hope you don't get too much snow....
ah...snow!!
miss it dearly. Please send some my way to Miami please(make sure you provide a tracking number..never know)
its currently about 79 here at the moment with lots of humidity.
While living in Chicago and Portland, the snow falls and covers all that is ugly and dirty in city living. almost as a blessing in disguise, but maybe not for those in Iowa. Here's a story that actually happened to me............
I remember once while being in the worst snow storm in the city, walking to the subway when a couple approached me for pocket change. All I had was about 3.50 and gave it to him. He returned a disgusted gaze back at me..
"what...just this?...you're kidding right?"
"ah..sorry thats all I have seriously"
"come on man...lets go to the ATM...this is my wife..she needs food man...come on!!!"
they continued to slowly follow me which made me feel a little uneasy.
"ah..sorry "
and with that, this individual splattered the most intense profanity at me while I approached the North lakeshore station, trying not to slip and fall from the wet snow.
The upper deck, the high intense wind chill factor of 10 hitting my scarf covered face, the snow drifts, waiting for the 8:30PM train was grueling. I kept wondering why this man was so upset over me giving what i had left.
The hour long ride, watching the beautiful roof tops of old 1920's passing by my window made me wonder why no one sees what i see; the roof tops covered in white, the street lights with those dull orange lights like orbs floating in the night. There is more to your surroundings than what you are willing to appreciate I thought to myself.
When I arrived at the Roosevelt station I dreaded the cold air again. Everyone rushed out quickly in drones, heading to their lives behind closed doors for another day while I just kept hoping to not slip on the thick smooth black ice on the way down the iron cast bridge.
As I approached Halsted I decided to take an alternate street, open that was quite dark but I thought, what would happen to someone like me on UC campus grounds. As I walked i saw on the freshly snow covered sidewalk what appeared to be a dollar bill. The wind swept behind me with a rough push. I watched for a few seconds this bill, apparently stuck on the snow, and picked it up. It was a brand new hundred dollar bill. I really couldn't believe this, never happened to me. I looked around to see if I could find who dropped it. In front of me was the popular polish sausage stand opened 24/7 with many people in line for a taste. But that was it,no one will claim it and so I stuck it in my pocket and walked away knowing that now I can stop worrying about paying the cellphone bill and perhaps get a Mexican burrito on the way.
As human nature is what it is, I went back to the same spot the next day, rummaging through the fresh white pearls of snow to find more bills, but that's the way fate holds you in check....give a little and you get some back, ask more and you will need to wait for fastech to deliver.
