Baffled update: now that the kayfun clone's tank is a little more than 1/2 empty, it's vaping like a champ. No dry hits, super saturated vape. No dry pulls required.

So this makes me think my earlier problems with wicking are due to pressure. But does it indicate too much wick, or too little? I know I should be posting pics, but my gear is not at hand right now.....

I'm guessing your wicking is good, something else was going on. Did you fill it up all the way? That could cause issues since there needs to be an air bubble to work properly. When I fill from the top I only go about halfway to the threads in the top chamber part, with finger over the airhole. Then I put the top piece on just to when it catches, flip it over so the air bubble is at the deck area when I screw it down tight.

It could also be that your wick was too far away from the juice channels. When you pull, liquid gets sucked in through the channels, and what doesn't get absorbed by the wicking gets sucked back out after the pull. If your wick isn't right at the channel, the juice that gets sucked in won't hit the wick and it will all flow back out. That action causes the wick to get pulled near the channels, so maybe when you got halfway down the tank the wick had finally got moved to the proper place. It's been said that the channels need to be totally clear of the wick but that's not true, you just can't have wick stuffed in them.

This helps me a lot! I have indeed been filling it nearly totally full, from the bottom port. I HAVE been covering the air hole just like you, so it must be that my wicks aren't/weren't ("weren't" is one of those words that looks really odd if you look at it after typing) close enough to the juice channels.

My plan now is to give it a refill and leave more room. If THAT goes well, I'll know I was indeed just overfilling. If, after this refill, I still get loads of scorched hits, I'll open up the build area again and attempt to adjust. Maybe by then I'll be able to get at my camera gear too. Gotta keep things quiet and not disturb the mom; she's still recovering from a total knee replacement.

Every tank RBA I've ever used works 100% better when half full compared to mostly full.

Did this build just for fun today. .31 ohm dual super nano coil w/ cotton on an IGO-W. VERY hot vape, goes through juice like nothing and not much flavor but the clouds it makes are ridiculous. Wouldn't vape it on daily basis. But for fun why not haha..

zip I've been reading while I get mine from fasttech and there are a few reports like yours maybe this helps..
Sub Par Build! Revised Modded and Fixed Pictures Included: FastTech Forums

the short summary is that the juice channels aren't deep enough so maybe drilling them a bit more deep could solve your issues

Hmmm....I don't know if I can successfully drill the channels. I don't have access to any vise grips or any other way to keep the base stable while I (attempt) the drilling. But thanks for the input just the same!

Alrighty. This is what I came up with after taking everyone's helpful comments and cramming them into my pea-sized brain. I forgot to try reorienting the coil so it's diagonal to the deck. I guess that's what I'll try next.

It's better, but I still get frequent scorched hits. Only solution I've found so far is to plug the air intake hole on the side of the base and take a couple HARD primer pulls. If I can remember to keep taking hard pulls, it behaves. But I much prefer a long, slow draw, and every time I try one of those I get a throat full of hurt!

btw, juice viscosity doesn't seem to be a factor. I'm having the same issues with 100%VG (like Boba's Bounty) and 70PG/30VG blends.

The only way I can get a smooth TH is to pack cotton snug inside coil. Yeah.."snug" is a galaxy standard technical unit of measurement. If my wick looked like pic, I would rewick with a thicker wick. Guess I'm Johnny out of step but that's what works in my world.

In my world cotton wicks don't expand when juiced.

Go.

I keep wondering what the diameter of that coil wrap is? It looks quite a bit wider than anything I've tried, but it could just be the pic. I now use 1/16", or sometimes a 5/64", but never any wider. So I'd say that much cotton on a smaller diameter wick if my observation is accurate. Also, a great kfl wick setup just posted on the kfl thread.

It's hard to tell from the pictures, but it seems like there's space between the cotton and the coil. I make the cotton loose enough to slide through with just a touch of resistance, but enough to fully fill the coil. If parts of the coil aren't touching wick it'll burn pretty hot in those spots.

I'd also try a smaller diameter coil, yours looks bigger than it needs to be. I have a standard micro in mine and it wicks great. And yeah, try the diagonal coil to make it easy for the wick to lay across the deck. Not sure how much of a difference that part really makes though since it's the only way I've set it up.
