Why isn't SS more popular than it is right now? It's lower resistance than Kanthal? No nickel or iron in it. Is it really hard to work with?

There was much discussion about possible Hexavalent Cromium creation. Hexavalent Cromium CR (6) is a known carcinogen when inhaled. It can be created when welding and hot working stainless. I don't think it was ever determined whether torching stainless mesh or dry burning stainless wire does create CR (6) but the uncertainty moved many from SS mesh wicks to ceramic or cotton. The lingering question would be my assumption to be the answer to your question.

Doesn't burning Nichrome 80 release hexavalent chromium? Isn't that what causes the varying color changes? I'm pretty sure that it does. Why would SS create more of this than Nichrome?

Slip have you ever used rugged wires? It's an SS blend wire and it's super durable. Trying to bend 24g Rugged Wires is like bending torched 18g A1. It's a really stiff wire that holds up well and there's virtually no ramp up time. So for people interested in SS, check that out first, the resistance of each gauge per foot is about half of kanthal.
I also pulled my stitched alien stovetop out of my doge so I could put the zipper claptons in. They're HUGE inside the atty. I originally had them at a 5/6 wrap parallel to a single strand 26g N80, but I had to make it a 4/5 wrap to get just ONE to fit so far lol. I'm gonna have to make micro micro claptons if I want a zipper Clapton fitting in a 22mm atty lol.

I did a little research and saw all the hexavalent chromium concerns about SS but I still wonder why the f no one cares about the possible formation of toxic chromium oxides from Kanthal and Nichrome. I believe Nichrome and Kanthal have even more chromium in them.

Nope but it sounds similar to Rene 41, Rene is super duper hard to shape and is used if i remember rightly by nasa to weld, i know Alexander Mundy knows about Rene as i do, i also know people were struggling with 27g rene but not to blow my own trumpet or anything :D i can make a very clean nano coil with 21g Rene .. heres a pic hehe.. couldnt resist digging up the past..

and a micro..

and another showing it holding a bit of weight, i think this was only the first or second time i used a coil jig like this ;)

Shiii..that looks like some strong wire! I can't even imagine what it's like to vape with NASA wire lol. Rugged wires only comes in 24,22,&20g. It's not SUPER hard to manipulate like that, but it's much stiffer than kanthal & oxidizes a deep deep blue.

There's no such thing when it comes to ramp time with this stuff, and it heats up super hot so it comes packaged with rayon to wick with because of the higher heat resistance. Thats 24g in the picture, I never got an ohm reading on it because I accidently broke (deformed really) one of the coils while rewicking it & dry firing it while trying to get the quads closer together. I did build a 24g rugged wires parallel to 20g N80, gotta dig up a pic of that somewhere.
Edit: here's a pic of my parallel 24g Rugged wires / 20g N80 6/5wrap:

24g kanthal dual coil, each eight wraps with a 1.5mm ID. Meters out at .3 ohms, and vaping awesome at 45 watts. Also my first successful dual coil build, I just started trying rebuilding again after an unsuccessful attempt over a year ago.

Fitting it inside the coil head with the right amount of cotton is for me. I've rebuilt Atlantis coil heads before and they're always a ***** for me. The cotton always seems to get in the way of the coil staying vertical.

Atlantis or Atlantis v2?

do you make the cotton wet with the fluid before inserting it?

Yeah I soak the cotton so it's wet, and I had an Atlantis 1 sold it because I have the Atlantis 2 now, but I've done it with the old and new coil heads, even reused the stock wire - torched off the gunk and wrapped them in cotton, never seems to come out right for me.

I said I'd make some zipper claptons so I did... @Silent Solution ...only problem is I have builds in every atty that will fit them! I don't want to have to take my stitched alien stovetop out of my Doge v2 just yet but I will soon. Until then: View attachment 478196specs are 30/34 N80 Claptons (counterclockwise) twisted and 28/34 N80 (clockwise) & helixed with 32g N60 & 36g N80 zippered and parallel to a single strand of 26g N80 5/6 wrap on a 2.5mm bit. Ohms unknown yet, will install soon..it's a struggle even fitting them in either of my mutation's so they're going in either my Dark Horse or doge v2
You can send them my way if you would like! In fact, I'll take any old builds you don't need lol. I just wrecked my car 3 days ago and my vaping money went on vacation. Trying to salvage as much as I can Nice build though partner!
