PRODIGY: Stick With The Old OR Go With The New ???

New Prodigy Redesign ... or ... Stick with the Old Prodigy Design

  • New Prodigy - (Smaller ... And likely a 5v only device)

  • Old Prodigy - (A Bit Smaller, with Vast Improvements) Still 3.7/5v/6v device

Hello My Fellow Vapers !!! :)

We have spent the last couple months redesigning the Prodigy. We have been trying to per-fect a certain design (which was originally going to be used on a smaller device, known as the PP ;) ) Anyways ... I'd like to hear from current Prodigy owners, those who have considered the Prodigy, or just anyone in general what your thoughts on the matter are ...

The Prodigy V1 was a great success (roughly 1,100 units sold) and while it had its faults that we later improved upon (super glue that decided to gas itself, switching from Delrin to Molded Rubber, etc...) ... it was a great device in many eyes.

So, my question .... With all the improvements we made over the V1 span, would you guys like to see a complete redesign that would likely be 5v exclusively, or would you prefer the old design, simply made out of Stainless Steel, with all the improvements (notched end cap ... smaller spring/press fitted, perhaps even smaller adapters, etc....) and keep it a 3.7v, 5v, and 6v optioned device?

That is my question for the evening ( right before the World Series :) )

Thanks Guys and Gals !!!!

My vote is to keep the original design. It is golden, don't mess with it too much. If you want to go stainless, that's cool. If you want to gnurl the knob, that's cool too.

Don't get me wrong, innovation is great, but you have a solid performer in the Prodigy. The only reason I ordered the Protege was because I wanted a back-up device and I couldn't order a v1 prodigy. The Prodigy was the first device that entered and replaced the entire rotation of devices. It's the corner stone of the commercially made U.S. mods and should be available for years to come.

Redesign for me. I love my Prodigy, but I think the switches will always be the weak point. I think a stainless, smaller unit, without a switch to break, would be great. I prefer 5 volts, as many do. I'd rather have a specialized device that does does what it does very well, dependably. If I want 3.7 volts, I'll use my Protege. 6 volts, I'll...well, 5 is enough for me. 1 vote for redesign here. May I also request that you consider making a retrofit for the Protege so that it could be switchless...maybe by selling a new style adapter seperately?

I think these are good features:

- Stainless Steel -- for durability
- Voltage options -- for versatility
- Notched end cap -- for better grip

Here are some others I would like to see:

- A reliable long-lasting switch, very important.
- An inner sleeve to reduce the empty space around RCR123 batts, which slips out for changing to a 18650 batt.
- coarser-pitch end cap threads to ease starting.
- an adjustable center post for 801 adapters. (I have a simple concept for this)
- an end cap spring that is secured to the end cap.

I voted old, but I'm confused by the "new" old one still handling the 18650. Seems like if you wanted to develop and refine the original Prodigy, hand feel would be important. Sized for 123 cells only would be ~6mm reduction in circumference and that's very significant subjectively in hand I would think. Combined with the conical adapter it would move it toward the Protege in look and feel.

If new buyers wanted 3.7V and long runtime there's always the Protege.

I hope you're not saying between the lines that the new one, at a dedicated 5V, would still be the same diameter as the original.

For me, the only real lack in the Prodigy is the general "chunkiness" of it, and if it was sized for 123 cells that would go away as much as possible - a little annoying having to put up with it for no reason.

"Afraid of change" is a highly biased and unfair thing to say.

Personally, I like all the proposed changes except for the "mouth activated" switch. I have yet to see a convincing explanation of why PS is considering such a configuration. But beyond that, smaller, made from stainless, 5v only, notched cap... all those sound like fantastic improvements.

I agree. Two pieces of metal or plastic pumping up and down causes fiction if they lean one way or the other they will bind. Also they broth expand and contract with heat and cold. (Switch problems)
Plus I would get teased about something pumping in my mouth all the time.
Most people I know don't like e-cigs.
They say why don't you just quit smoking, even the smokers say the same thing.

A. I can't believe the Prodigy only sold 1100 units. There are some people missing out! Seriously!
B. I have both the Prodigy (2) and the Protege and each have their place. I never take one without the other. I like the Prodigy at 3.7v, it lasts forever. I've taken 4 day trips with 3 batts and never worried about running outta wattage.
C. I like the stainless idea (who doesn't) but not at the price of getting rid of the original design.
It's an Icon. Ford still makes the Mustang and Chevy the Corvette. ICONS!
*Don't mess with an ICON*

I'd love to see the improvements you speak of on two models.
Spiff up the old and introduce a new :) That way I can get one of each.

I'd really like to see the V1 in stainless. *I'm polishing one of my V1's for a shiny look* :)

Even if it's a limited run. Do a Pre-Order only with a 4 - 6week wait (No Cancellations, No Refunds, Period).
That way only serious buyers will sign up for it.
Think you'd be supised how many would be interested.
I'd go put one in my basket right now :)

The mouth activated switch thing¿ I dunno. I'd have to demo one (hint, hint, wink, wink, nudge, nudge)

Whatever we decide, I'm going to get one.
All the other serious mods are better than an inch in diameter.
It's like vaping a cucumber.

tell the truth i just want to buy a few prodigys, i bought one for a friend and i want one too, as well ive been asked to buy a few for friends as well
imho you should still sell it in SS if thats how it will change but still sell it as it is

this new version if its lip activated and only 5V isnt really going to be a prodigy
you should rename it Einstein or something lol, because in essence its not going to be a prodigy

the SS and orther enhancements on the V1 well now thats what i call a V2

anyway i would really like to get my hands on even a V1

Since I already own the original V1 I think that need is satisfied. A new smaller sleeker 5 volt machine that I would feel comfortable using in public would be a plus. But I use the Protege for when I am on the move and in public now.

I don't know how to advise you Steve. You have a big decision to make and I am glad I don't have to make it.

Are there people here who understand what Steve means when he refers to this new switch? Pumping in your mouth? How so?

I think we (or just I?) need a clearer explanation of what this switch is and how it works.

tough call my man. i'm voting for new design though.

i must agree that revamping the original is a great idea, as it seems to be a very solid design that will continue selling well.

that being said, again as mentioned, perhaps a smaller run of this new design to test the market? i know everyone means well by going on and on about the "mouth activated" design you mentioned, but you HAVE to keep some things secretive if you're going to have the "next best thing." that's going to be a tough seller without the details about how it works...but i will say...if it is like the other device (which is it, the copper?? i honestly forget) that you have to push in on the atomizer, i personally don't like that idea. i may be way off, but it sounds like your design may be more of a twist or something, perhaps a lever, i dunno. but...if it is the type of switch i'd have to push in, i'd say no.

very tough decision though, as the mob mentality is likely to start setting in and plenty of malformed rumors and opinions will start spreading about the mouth thing giving it a bad name before you even start.

and hopefully no one will start a 15 page thread about how you "stole" the idea before ever seeing or touching the actual device.

Why not just keep the Prodigy V1 for people that are affraid of change and the new design for the rest of us. Why do you need a 3.7v prodigy when you have the protege?

This makes total sense to me as well and you get the best of all worlds. I have never used your PV's but I look forwartd to getting my Protege and I would definitely buy both of the others versions as well if they are available.

Derek:)
