had a really cool ride today. the river trail had been shut down at the fifteen mile marker for a bridge construction project, so the northern half had been shut off for me since I discovered this network, well, today I parked at mile seventeen and headed north to see how things were going, and finally! the bridge is open
First I stopped at the Milburnie dam site, a place where an old dam has been removed to restore the watershed:before
now:
this is a beautiful spot I often visit , take a break, and just listen to the water. I grew up and lived a good portion of my life on a riverbank, and oftentimes miss the sound of the water, it seems to somehow sooth my soul.
Onward now, so I rode up to mile marker ten, after seeing some really wonderful wetland pockets up in Raleigh city proper, the trail lies along the watershed area of the Neuse River and there were some pretty upscale neighborhoods along this part of the trail, having the river and wetlands abutting them. At one point I was crossing a marshy area on a low lying footbridge and startled a bunch of ducks which were just floating about and feeding in the calm back waters to the river, mostly mallards and few other types I am not familiar with, but a couple let out a real cracker of a call as I was speeding along. So I hit the binders and stopped, and there must have been about thirty birds within maybe fifty feet of me, they nervously started swimming away, so I re mounted the bike and continued on.
Now I suddenly have a whole bunch of new territory to explore, and plan to make a ride to the trail head soon, just to see where it starts, then onto the branch trails, there are over a hundred miles of trails connected to this green-way!
