Make no mistake, there is a learning curve with TC, for that reason alone, it's not for everyone. Many, like myself like a new challenge, new technology. I did not jump in early, I thought it was a fad, something to get people to buy more products, like 3D TV's. So I waited, I read, I watched videos, and best of all, I learned from those that blazed the trail before me, most of those were members here on ECF. I admit, if someone is not open minded about it, or just likes to keep things simple, then there is no huge advantage, because if you don't do it correctly, then it's doomed to failure, like most things in life. Sure, I still have issues with various brand mods, and their wacky TCR values, but I am stiil devoted to making the technology work for ME. And I can tell you from following as many threads as I have time for, many, many people screw it up, for many reasons, and then discount it and go back to doing what they were comfortable with, which is human nature.

It's not just about avoiding "dry hits", one huge benefit is never exceeding the temperature were the creation of the "bad" chemicals can be created. Now and then I still fire up one of my MECH mods, but I'm careful, as there is no feedback as to what temp your juice can get to. This info is out their on the web.

You can certainly get a fine and rewarding vape without ever getting into TC vaping, but if you ever start wondering what are all of those other settings, on most new modern mods are for, then you may want to give it a real shot.
Do you have a fave comprehensive TC overview post or tutorial? I learned TC like you did, from your description. But I'm about to introduce a very dear friend to vaping for the first time and would like to point her to a canonical resource, if such exists. I haven't found one yet myself. Thx for any input!

No V4 clones, yet. I tend to stick with what works for me an what I like. In the case of the V3 I like it, it works well for me and is almost impossible to destroy being all stainless. Perfect when working outside. Now, if I can figure out some kind of dust filter for the air intake....
+1 on that air filter! I'm a shepherd, so I'm outside vaping all day, and the gunk in my topper and vents drives me crazy. I have to do a teardown and rebuild every night, esp during the summer. Ugh.

Do you guys hand twist or use a drill? When making 2 twisted wire for coils? I hand twisted 32g ss316L & it was fine, I used a drill & the wire was so springy could not make a good coil.
I then heated the twisted wires & torched the made coil. Then it worked fine. Which method do you use? Thanks!
I use drill, BUT: the springiness is your friend - try making your coil turning the other direction. It'll coil itself if you use its own twist-tension in its favor instead of fighting it. It'll want to coil naturally in a certain direction. Play with it a little in your hands and I think you'll see what I mean. I'm a spinner and weaver and make all my own yarn, and all these twisted-wire solutions are very close to home for me!

I've heard of notch coils but can you get one to install yourself? I've heard they work pretty well - instant ramp up.
Notch coil is cut from flat pieces of SS with a CAD-driven plasma cutter. Construction is very different from wire. But I've heard good things about it, esp for low-power builds. Rates similar to Clapton. Def not a DIY coil-building experience though. (Unless you have a very fancy metal shop)

Sorry, don't know if a comprehensive tutorial exists. I helped about 10 people quit smoking, by helping them get into vaping, but it was always one or two people at a time, with personal instructions and then followups.

If they are really new to vaping, and not yet into making their own coils, that's a bunch of steps you could skip for now. Using proper TC pre-made coils, Nickle, titanium, SS, etc. would be the first discussion. While I'm a mostly titanium wire user, I would consider SS for a beginner, since if they make a mod setting mistake, they can still Vape in VV/VW. For me, and the mods I own, I just normally leave my wattage at 35w. and adjust my temp to taste and vapor production. Have them start a new coil at a lower temp, like 400f, it's best to slowly ramp up a new pre-made coil anyways, and then go up slowly in temp till they find the vape they like. Of course you will have to teach them about the relationship between airflow and juice flow, assuming a tank with JFC control. Most inexpensive tanks don't have JFC anyways. Down the road, if they want, there are a lot more choices with devices like DNA200's and Escribe software. Start simple, so they are not overwhelmed. It's always a great feeling knowing you got a friend started. Good luck!

Sitting down, facing forward.
How big is the tank, how much can it hold

Sent from my SM-G935V using Tapatalk

The tank holds at least 6ml. I've never really checked it 'cause all you have to do is pour liquid into it right out of the bottle.

I don't know of any comprehensive TC tutorial. I've been at it a while and I still have to tinker with it to find a satisfactory vape with each new coil or juice, but once I get it dialed in, it's all good. I've found a good and safe starting point will be to set watts at 18 divided by the ohms (example: 18/0.5 ohms= 36 watts) and temperature at 420F and go up from there until you find your sweet spot.

Indeed, if folks are not into "tinkering", they should avoid TC vaping entirely! Would save me from a lot of forum message typing. :)

If you are a set it and forget it vapor, stick to Kanthal or SS in power mode VV/VW. You'll miss out on using some of the other types of wire choices, and other TC benefits. The learning curve is not huge in my opinion, but you have to devote the time to read and experiment, and I understand many don't have the time or dedication.

I just tried to respond in another thread to a question "how do you use TC". I did the best I could to respond, but as far as I know there is no one small page online that will make you an expert in one reading. The more I read, the more I learn, but I make the time.

I believe the OP was looking for "comprehensive TC overview post or tutorial". The thread you linked to is where I learned a lot about TC vaping and wires, but it's 195 pages long, took me a few days to get through long a go, I still follow it. Lots of good info if one makes the time to sift through it, but by no means is it a "tutorial". :)
I would say it's a pretty comprehensive tc overview. The first few posts are most important. It pretty much breaks how tc works down so people can understand it. It also tells them about tcr which is key for tc.

I know, I've read the whole thread, but few are going to get through 195 pages, but they should make the attempt. Some of the info is now quite dated. It's a good starting point I guess. So yeah, READ from the start, and go as far as you have time for, at some point you will see my participation. I learned a lot there, many of the good contributors have left for whatever reasons, and the thread has slowed down.

Popped a Demon Killer 0.2 ohm B style coil into the Merlin. Wicked with massively trimmed dm Viskose, and it is vaping like a champ! The VT133 is at 450F/40W using the UD-SS31L V4 CSV as it is a little hotter than the standard Steam Engine SS316L version.

These things are BIG and hold a ton of juice!

I won a koopor plus here thanks to Ecf and koopor. I had 316l in hand before I recieved the mod. Was excited to try tc and ss from all I've read. Well, 290f was the sweet spot for me(tried higher and holy :censored:). Tried it in dripper and rta. It worked well in the dripper so I didn't dry hit.( I've since bought the wotofo ice cube that is clear glass so I can see my wicks getting dry). That's about it tho. It has an off taste to me and soon was back to kanthol(same off taste to my friend too). yeah one that insisists on cotton bacon haha go figure. I do like the ramp up and can use tc or vv/vw and I can see how it might help someone new to vaping. Just not for me....

After a @disley recommendation I bought some of the Feltfine Tencel. What a wonderful looking material. Lovely long fibres and beautiful to touch. I am not sure about how clean it it so I have washed some and will let you know how I go when I wick something this afternoon.

Well.......I am going to need a bit more practice with the Tencel. The fibres are silky soft and don't twist together in the same way as the KU rayon and Cellucotton. I think I need to be a bit more forceful or use the double insertion method. The vape feels like it is on the edge of a dry hit and a bit of popping so I am sure I haven't got it right.

The taste is very clean and was sharp for the first dozen vapes but then the flow issues kicked in. I will try again when I have more time to work through it tomorrow.

Sorry no pics because it's in a small coil head and I would have to trash it to show you.

I'm gonna have to try some of that to satisfy my curiosity. Not because I don't trust those who have repeatedly said other options are better, but because I'm a stubborn, bull headed man who has to learn everything the hard way by seeing for myself. I remember thinking to myself, once, when my dad told me to never pee on an electric fence, "we'll just see about that."...Turns out, he knew what he was talking about.
