I used ProTank coils for quite a while before I started winding my own coils with cotton. Thankfully rayon came along soon thereafter so I tried it. What a difference! I was an early adopter of rayon and I've never looked back. Viva la rayon!!

Thayamax's experience and mine are nearly identical. I was one of the first regularly using cotton back in the day (with unbleached cotton balls) but when rayon came along I quickly adopted it and never looked back. It improves on the benefits of cotton with none of the downside.

Never got a chance to try ReadyXwick, they don't ship to Canada. I did try degummed Hemp (nasty stuff that is) and still have a pile of BD13 wicks here. All this alternative wick talk makes me want to dig out a Genny and put some sintered Al2O3 wick in it. :D

BD13? Those look perfect for genny tanks. What material are they made from?

I cut about 50% off the tails up to the point that the wick leaves a "shoulder" that goes to the coil. Others probably have different methods depending on the RTA used. I'm not familiar with your RTA so I can't say what would work best for your OBS, it might take a little experimenting.

I'm just not sure if I'm supposed to make shorter tails or cut them into points to make them thinner. I think I have the density down. I put enough so the coil was moving a little when I slid it through. I'm getting muted flavor.

Sounds like your density thru the coil is good, I cut a little off each side, and top and bottom of the wick tails to thin down the tails. I'm just not familiar with your tank and can't say exactly how to wick it. Have you watched any rebuild vids for ideas?

I checked out only one video. On the first page, JeremyR said if the flavor is muted then the density is too much. I think I'll try to rewick and not use too much.

Edit: Good Lawd dat nic hit...

We all have our different methods I guess. For any wire gauge smaller than 24awg I have to support the coil with my thumb nail to keep the coil from bending out of shape while pulling the rayon through, so I wick'm tight.
I find that under wicking causes more issues than over wicking, especially dry hits and muted flavor. Over wicking can cause muted flavor too but you have to be pulling very very hard on the rayon to get there.
I listen/feel for the squeak while pulling it through the first time but I don't stop there. It has to squeak when I pull it back and forth a couple of times. If it doesn't I consider it under wicked.
My 2¢

For the Nano I have the wick tight in the coil body (I can feel pressure sliding it, though it doesn't deform my twisted 26AWG), The tails I pretty much just chop 50% off of (the upper part of the tails). I then cut length so that when the tail is folded down to the liquid ports it is just barely inside them (so the ports hold the tails in place if the tank gets knocked around a bit) That means the inner edge of the tails will actually be a bit deeper into the wells, but I'm too lazy to really cut them even [emoji3]

For muted flavor you may need to adjust positioning. I use 2.5mm ID, twisted 26. For me I have the center of the coil body even with the middle of the posts (coil center at midpoint between the two grub screw holes). I then horizontally center the coil so the tails will drop directly down into the two eliquid holes. Other people get good results positioning the coil a bit higher vertically -- there's a little trial and error depending on your particular coil.

Once you get the coil positioning straight for your coil, it really is an excellent flavor tank [emoji106]

Thanks markfm. I've actually been using my Merlin RTA because I've been having a lot of wicking problems with the Engine Nano over the past couple days. Everything seems to be fine on the Merlin RTA. The flavor is there but it's nothing amazing. To be fair, I'm using a liquid I haven't used in a long time so I don't remember how good or not good it was.

Good explanation of what works in the Nano.

Thanks for the link @Mowgli :thumb:

The MDS sheets for WFA (White Fused Alumina) have all zeros and it is classified as non hazardous. The raw material dust is listed as an irritant if you get it in your eyes or breath it in etc...

So I really don't know if WFA would even have the same health risk that aluminum does.

The BD13 wicks were quite popular way back when in this thread here.

Will the BD13 wicks keep up with 5sec pulls 25w in an Origenny? That's where I run mine with mesh.
