Here's how I trim my tails on the top leaving the tail on the bottom, first, I still consider myself as a newb, I'm no expert.

You'll see how I like to keep the fibers straight as I can as I fold under. I like to use a big sewing needle to fold the tail, then flip the needle over and use the eye to tuck the ends in place. You'll see how tight the tails are, they are inline with the posts, not sticking out. If I had trimmed on the bottom, when I fold the tails over the cut ends that makes the tails stick out father.

Well after a half day vaping on it, it may look like a good build but it's just not preforming as it should, lacking flavor and vapor, I have to get it too hot for my taste (450F) to get the vapor volume I like and that's too hot for good flavor. Too tired to mess with it tonight, I'll rebuild it tomorrow and try again, that's why I say I still consider my self a newb, consistency just isn't there. I get it right about 80-85% of the time, then there are times it looks and feels like I'm doing the same thing and it just seems to elude me. Rather then trying to tinker with the wick to dial it in, I'd rather just pull the coils and start over, it only takes about five minuets to rebuild from scratch. I'm sure I left the tails a little too full, should have been thinned a little more.

Perhaps try a little shorter wick tomorrow :) less to fold under.

Shorter wicks is a great tip. I think we always think more or less wick when it comes to the tails and don’t consider length. Length has a big part in the speed at which your wicking does its thing. Maybe it is just me but I overlooked that when I started building but shortening your tails can speed up the capillary action of your wick. It can also cause your RTA to leak. The key is to find the perfect balance of amount and length of tail for each particular RTA. That’s probably why I only have 2 rta’s, my brain can only retain so much knowledge. 2 is the limit:blink:

Well I agree the length can matter but in this case the length of the tails is the one thing that I always get consistent so I think I can rule that out. Once thinned I pull the tail down the side of the deck and trim it with scissors using the bottom edge of the deck as a length guide, the scissors lay against the underside of the deck, tail pulled taught, then "snip". Seems like I have too much materiel covering the feed holes and that's keeping the juice from flowing as it should. I guess I could take a minuet to pull the deck, lift the tails a little and see if that helps, might try that but in the end I'll just do it over, don't want to leave it like that. I have a habit of laying back in the easy chair while watching TV, taking a vape and set the mod on my chest. I've been known to nod off and wake up with my mod laying there, if it leaked my shirt would be a mess LoL

Willie, I trim the wick wet and right at the O ring seal just above the deck bottom. That seems to give me a wick that pretty much "stands" on the feed holes. As with everything vaping, YMMV.

PS - I do that with the build deck out of the base ring and check with light to make sure the feed holes are, indeed, covered.

I started with rayon and I see no reason to get any cotton. If my taste is muted I pull strands and if acts like it's not wicking properly, I trim tails a bit more.

I keep a small snack size zip lock bag with precut pieces for daily wicking. Then I have a huge ziplock bag at work for emergencies or needing to fill snack bag. I keep the big box of rayon in closet covered. Inside bag zip tied tight. I don't get any odor from the ziplock bags.

Ive successfully wicked my RTA, but taste was meh, got too hot, and think maybe I should try building coil myself for it. Maybe this weekend?

Jump in the deep end of the pool and build that coil, if it doesn't work well build another! Keep at it and don't look back, before you know it you'll wonder why you didn't build your own coils long ago. ;)

I feared building coils, I kept shelling out coin for coil heads then one day realized I didn't have any left, my coils where badly gunked and I couldn't take vaping on them any longer and I didn't want to make an hour round trip to the vape shop. I had everything I needed to make coils, I just kept putting it off so I gave it a go, my first coil wasn't pretty, didn't last long but it worked. If I hadn't painted myself in a corner that day I'd still be buying coil heads. Now I can bang out a fresh build in less then five minuets, what the heck was I so afraid of? The money I save on coil heads now goes for more vape gear and juice. :)

Same thing happened to me, but I had no issues with my dual coil RDA. I either like them or not so much. The RTA I have is finicky, at least for me. Have some SS316 28AWG I purchased to do a rebuild of a tobecco coil head. Still have tried that yet either. I do need to throw down and buy a bunch of wire.

I've bought from both LV and AVS. AVS are top shelf retailers and their spools of fused clapton SS316 are of excellent quality.

If you are looking for other types of wire such as Ti GR1, SS430 or NiFe 52 & 70 then Zivipf has them in all gauges and the shipping is fast from Germany.

Hey TD, how clean is that wire from zivipf? I bought some, can't remember if it was Ti or SS316L, from them a few years ago and had to scrub it with an abrasive pad and IPA to get the crud off. The wire, worked fine, just a big PITA to get clean enough to use.

I only use 24g SS430 from zivipf. I don't need to clean it but I give it a few drags through an iso soaked vaper towel anyway. It barely colors the towel if at all.
