Rayon Wick - Better Flow, Flavor, Longevity, and Nic Hit!! - Pt.2

Hi, hopefully y'all can help me answer some questions I have about Rayon.
I have up until now been using reddits' vaping communities and made a post about substances used for wicking and buying in bulk, 1 user mentioned rayon which I had never heard of before, when I searched for it there I didn't find a single post about it, which is kinda strange imo. When I searched in google I found you guys and girls and I'm even more puzzled why there was nothing about this wunder fiber on that platform. Now I found a listing on the evil amazon for 500ft of Rayon for $26 and I'm even more baffled. Is this really real, if so that's a hell of a lot for so little moneys even if I add in postage from the States to Ireland its still only $50 for 500ft. Its called 44060 Graham Cellucotton Beauty Coil 100% Rayon. Am I missing something here, please help. Thanks in advance

Nope, that’s the real deal. If you lived in the states it would be less than that and right down the street (in most cities) 44060 FTW!!

I've been pre-soaking the center of my rayon with a bit of plain VG, then twisting to roughly 2.5mm (clip between two alligator clips to hold) and then pre-wrapping it with 28g 316L wire. Solves the issue of sagging and having to pull through tightly/squeaking or ruining a nicely spaced coil.

Another upside is I can pre-coil a few of them and then pop em' in later :) I call it the "Aerocoil" method :)

Will make a video.

I don’t dislike that idea at all

I don't like it because I need to feel that squeak when wicking my coils. I'd be worried a little about having it too loose. I only use spaced coils and don't have a problem with disturbing them at all. What gauge wire do you use? I mostly use 28g kanthal and SS.

Until today, I had used rayon precisely once, carefully following @qorax's method for wicking the Erl. Today I used it to wick a Gate. No idea if the wick is tight enough in the coil (I heard a sound that may have been the squeak everyone talks about but I'm not sure), no idea if the tails are thin enough (probably not--I cut off approximately the top third of the wick at the shoulders). I'm vaping a juice I'm not familiar with and so I can't tell if the flavor is muted or not. A wee bit of popping but no spitting so far, at least.

We shall see.

Ok my method needs more testing, but anyone want to give this a try?

1) Take a thicker wick than usual and twist good and tight.

2) Clip both ends into a Helping Hands (soldering thingy)... or some other holder.

3) Wet the center until soggy with VG.

4) Wrap with wire and trim rayon ends to size.

...I just can't get a tighter coil with other methods, but then I'm not very long into this.

Here's a finished one:

YMMV, a lot.

The occasional (and usually just the first draw) pop doesn't bother me, yeah, nice to know it's firing. But it drives my wife nuts.
Luckily for me, the cats don't mind.

@Aerodan, when you wrap the coil, do you do it tightly or lightly? I.e., do you try to avoid compressing the juiced-up wick or do you mash it as much as you can? Or do you do something in between?

@Zazie I'm twisting before juice and after. The trick seems to be getting the diameter about where you'd want for the coil (I'm 2.5mm usually). In my reading, the goal of rayon appears to be the most condensed one can get under the coil, so wetting and compressing again assures it won't sag later. Hope that helps. Once I'm sure this is sound and not a crazy idea, I'll video it.

Thanks! AD

That's a solid drawback, yes. Most of my center air holes not an issue, but anything else gets odd. I'm also used to firing my 316 coils before installing since it sets them firmly and they get nice and springy.

Anything thicker than a 26G is so unaffected by pulling rayon through that I don't bother with this prewrap. The 28+ wire, I keep ruining trying to get it tight.

So twist before and after soaking, hoping to achieve the diameter you want, and then wrap the wire tightly, I guess.

The main drawback I see in prewicking the coil is that it will be tricky to position it because the airhole will be difficult to see.
