yes.. I just ran a Cotton core, rayon shell wick on my Erlkonigin rta. Qorax had posted about it on the Erl thread. I had a longer coil going.. parallel 28g 6 wraps .6 ohms.. made the coil longer.. wanted to try that wicking. small tight bundle of cotton, then wrapped that with rayon.

worked very well!

XBarb!!

There is an idea. :)

The only thing that I don't like about Rayon that it doesn't "swell" when wet. But if I wrap it in Cotton - I will get the best of both Worlds: Liquid conductivity of Rayon and expansion of Cotton inside the coil. HHHHHmmmm....

I have been switching from cotton to Rayon every other rewick. Which for me is every 24 hours.

Why so often ?
I've been running the same wick for well over a week at 6ml/day.

When I first started with rayon there 'seemed' to be a break-in period, but now I don't even notice it.
Cotton most definitely has a bell curve of flavor whereas rayon is more lineal.

With cotton I find that if I dont rewick every day it darkens the juice pretty bad. And the juice I use gunks the coil really bad so i like to keep it clean. Switching between the 2 was more of an experimental process for me to help determine quick one I liked better.

atrophy,

Just because you have a Maserati doesn't mean you have to drive 150 mph. :vapor:

I did the same thing when I got my Seven 30... it is kind of disappointing to not put the pedal to the metal. By the way my Pro Tank coil at 30 watts last about 4 seconds before the coil went Poof.

I am really not trying to break any records. I just want a flavorful and productive vape. I am not a cloud chaser at all. I have only pushed my PV once to about 40W and that was WAAAAYYYYY too much. My norm seems to be around 15-25W which I think is quite modest. The latest build in the PV is my first real "sub-ohm" build and it happened that way as I wanted to keep the coils rather short lengthwise Honestly I thought that opening up the device would allow a loose draw with great production. I also thought that it may mute flavors which would be fine if there was more vapor. I have never been a lung hit person and that may be the main issue is that I have some sort of sensitivity to a massive amount of vapor. The Patriot is still rocking and only hits a little harsh when I accidentally flood the deck with about 10+ drips. Other than that is is performing well and I will continue to use it until I can get the PV figured out. I won't give up but me and the PV are at odds for now.

I have since retired the PV as it started hitting harsh again. I tired less watts, more watts, more air, less air, and everything else I could think of. Same harsh hits returned. IMO its not the build as the harsh taste is the same no matter what I build. I think it is the combo of the juice and the atty. I may spring for some "premium" juice at my B&M and see if it makes a difference. Other than that the PV is going in the vape case as its harsh hits and leakiness are kinda frustrating. It just might be the juice. I also think that it was "clean enough" when I first cleaned it about a week or so ago as the harshness hasn't changed its profile.

Anyways back to the Rayon business. I have gotten to the point where I need to pull the wicks and dry burn my build. I don't think the wicking is a problem but more that my coils are starting to foul leading to a bad taste. I am vaping various chocolates and it comes to no surprise as I have had this issue with chocolate flavors before in my clearos. Kinda bummed as this build was doing so well.

Anyways on to the photos after about 10mL I think.

1.2 ohm coil twisted 30/32 @18W same juice vendor in the Patriot and the vape is outstanding from the get go. It is definitely something to do with the PV. Not exactly the device itself, but how it performs with my build, juice, and vaping style. Either way it isn't jiving.

atrophy,

Well I am using 16 watts on my Fogger ( 8 watts X 2 (coils)) and that is fine with my Black Licorice (water clear juice). I don't know I tried some Kahlua once and that stuff gunked up coils and wicks faster than I could fill the tank. Chocolate may be in the same bracket.

But looking at your pictures it doesn't look all that bad actually if that was my setup I would be say He!! that is good for another four re-fills at least. Sure sounds like there is something strange about that RDA.

Do the air holes hit the coils straight on? I know with any of my tanks if I don't line up the air holes with the coils it just taste REALLY harsh. They say you can move the air holes to get more or less throat hit - NOT for me it just goes from a great vape with whatever throat hit that juice gives to extremely harsh when I offset the air hole more than about one wick diameter let or right.

Some of these pro-vapers must have some secret they are not telling the rest of us mere mortals.

PS - I can continue to use my Fogger with the coil gunked 3 times what you so in the pics and it still tastes and hit OK just start to loose flavor and nic buzz. I didn't realize I was loosing the nic hit until I re-built tonight to get the flavor back. I sat down one the couch and said wow that tastes great started chain vaping a little until all of a sudden the room started spinning. Had to set that puppy down for awhile. Maybe the carbon build up works like a carbon water filter... ???

I have no issue with clear or clear-ish juices. I have discovered that anything chocolate from my vendor of choice is a coil killer for sure. I have tried every wick combo under the sun and nothing can save the coils from the chocolatey funk. It vapes great until I start to get "that" taste and I know that it is time because if I keep it up it will hit hard and make me gag. No amount of dripping will make it go away. The juice is outstanding so I guess it is a trade-off for some chocolatey goodness.

As for the RDA, the air hole is directly over the coil as best as I can ( you can see the funky angle I put the coil at to facilitate the flow). I also have the other side open so that it gets max flow allowable. No issues with this RDA, its the juice and I figured that one out about a month ago. In an EVOD it kills the coil in one to two tanks. I am glad that I can get about 10mL before I have to clean it.

Hey atropy

You know I have to ask.. Did you try that chocolate with the tails thinned? I would cut them as marked in the photo.

The reason shorter, thinner tails work better is because particulates (including flavor) don't have to travel as far through the filter (wick) therefore the wick lasts longer and provides a more flavorful vape for an increased amount of time.

Shorter, thinner tails are better than fat long tails. What filters more, a 4 inch thick sponge or a 1 inch thick sponge. In wicking we want the least amount of filtering, more particulates equal more flavor.

Jeremy I have tried every wicking option I could think of. Thick tails, thin ones, long ones, short ones, mustache ones, ponytail ones, and etc. Nothing can keep the coils from funking with the chocolate juice that I use.

The build above is what I am using right now and I'll see if I can get some longevity out if it. I am on a fruit and candy kick today so it should hold up really well. I have the tails long on the deck so that it will hold and maintain the juice. I think of it like a fuel cell. I can vape the thing dry and there are two tiny spots where you can see that there is more juice than the rest (tight spot with a rather sharp bend). I could probably tweak it but it is working really well right now with no leaks. There is great flow to the coil as you can definitely tell by observation that the wick is nearly dry.

Atroph-

Plume veil on a REO?

Nope. I am using an IPV2. My first box mod and it is doing quite well IMO. I have about $100 invested in it including a new VTC4. There are a few quality issues that are easily addressed, and don't really outweigh the benefits of a 50W regulated box. I don't seem to go over 25W and I only went that high on a dual coil setup. I don't see how the super sub-ohm cloudchasers can do it. I get choked up when I go above 30W. I know that 100 and 150 box mods are on the horizon and honestly I don't think I'll ever need one of those. I don't have a mech and I don't think I will get one with a decent regulated box. I can change the vape with a push of the button vice twisting another coil to match the mech. That is just my way of thinking.

Excellent point 54.

I cringe when I see full long tails... It never worked well for me... But I only have 2 rbas, and my tails are paper thin on my dripper. But ymmv

Well, I've got vape mail on the way, so I'm gonna be learning some new wicking techniques...
I've got 2 Tobhs coming.. a copper 22mm for my shiny new Tobeco Knight mod (copper and carbon fiber) and a larger stainless one for my new Youde Gladiator 26650 mod
Also ordered a Perseus genny for the Gladiator (just matched up too perfectly to pass up) So I'm gonna TRY to wick a genny with rayon...

Also got a Tobeco Orchid V2 clone for my Tesla... if I understand correctly it is kinda like a Kayfun as far as wicking/operation goes? Can anybody comment/confirm that?

Much playtime and learning to come for me it seems...

With rayon in the genny I recommend wicking your coil off the atty then feeding the tail thru the deck then mount the coil. Use a very thin, maybe necessary to thin the tail, you don't want it plugging the hole in the deck.
The orchid should be cool, I'd wick it like a fogger v4 and see how that goes, there kids of info about it in the Fogger v4 thread and the orchid thread.

Thanks, Tbev! I'll check out the drop kit...
I was on the same line of thinking as far as wicking a genny... thin tails through the deck (which seems to work better with rayon anyway) Good tip on feeding the wick before mounting the coil, I'll definitely try that!
I'll also check up on how foggers are wicked and see if I can find that orchid thread... shouldn't be too hard!

*edit*
Just checked out the drop kit for the Orchid... that's pretty cool! Definitely gives it a different look... dammit, now I'm gonna have to order more stuff... already need to go order the milli-ohm meter that I've been eyeballin' (4-wire of course!)
