Even though that's funny @untar my roid rage took a moment to settle down. LOL. Three days left, god help me. I did not sleep WELL last night and I hate it. :)

I will say, I can wind a coil. I even only use half of my jig, the rod part. Somehow my grandmother teaching me to knit and even tension makes it all better than trying to use the other part. If I want contact coils, I just squish them one I'm done making a spaced coil.

You can do it. You don't really NEED a jig even. Just make a few, for fun, don't calculate out anything at this point etc. I used most of my kanthal that came with my coilmaster kit just learning how to make coils. It's not entirely EASY to start, but IMHO if you are already WICKING, well, that's much harder. Steam-engine.org is also fairly easy to use. If you have questions, well, ask them.

But I am 100% convinced that you can build a coil if you wish.

The key to making coils with kanthal is to cut your piece and then torch it before coiling it.
It not only gets you some oxidation on your wire, but more importantly, it will take the springiness out of the wire. That way it doesn't try to uncoil on you, and the wire stays where you put it.
I haven't used kanthal in a great while (I use SS316l), but I used to 'torch' mine on the gas stove or with a lighter.
This is of course for basic coils.

Agreed, I just use the shank end of a drill bit, pick your diameter.........
I only use the mandrel part of my jig. I used drill bits as well, until I was in a shop and they had coilers on clearance for $7. The wire catch comes in handy for even tension, but I found the actual coiler only works well with thicker gauges that I don't use.
I use mine like a drill bit with a handle, lol.

please excuse the shaky photos...hands are a bit unsteady this morning.
my best attempt so far i think. 37.5W and 445F on the therion.

Nice! I’ve been watching videos of making twisted coils. Did you do this yourself and if so how did you do it? I know a lot of people use drills but mines busted. I saw on video where the guy uses a pen clip and just keeps twisting it.

I used to torch my wire, but I've not really found that to be so necessary. I actually find SS "springier" than kanthal, at least the gauges I use. I will torch that from time to time. It's well, kind of fun anyway... :)

Anna

How do you secure or hold the wire when scorching?

I agree. With my SS I've learned to place the coil closer to the post or deck than I want it, and then use the coil mandrel to pull it into the position I want and it tightens the coil right up and gets it into the position I want.

Some hold it in pliers. I just use my fingers.
I heat the half away from my fingers, then turn it around and repeat.
You don't have to heat it a lot, just a light glow.

Yep. I use a pair of pliers and a sharpie.
Just keep tension on them and spin until the wire snaps itself off at the sharpie clip.
Cut a length of wire, fold it in half, put loose ends in pliers, then put sharpie pocket clip in the wire fold. Pull gently for tension, then I place sharpie against my thigh and roll the sharpie down it, hold sharpie so it doesn't unwind, move back to top of thigh, repeat until wire breaks off at clip.
Did that make any sense?

Broke my first glass tank ever... and it was my Skyline glass...
Hope there's a US distributor for replacements, otherwise shipment from Greece could take a while and not be especially cheap.
There's nice Ultem and polished Ultem tanks you might like, there's even Ultem drip tips to match with that.

That sux.
Had it on the Dicodes and it fell over didn't it?
Dicodes did not drop, I was rewicking and was having shorting issues. Cotton was pushing the coil down I think. I took the topper back off and the juice made it slippery and it hit the floor glass first... I am looking at it as an excuse to order extra glass and a Skydrop topper... I have a back up ultem tank, going to do a large single order.

That's how I broke my first one. I was drying it off and it popped out of the towel and bounced on the floor several times before edge chipped off, lol.
I know when I used to put my attys on my round Provari and it tipped over I would freak out, lol.

I have plenty of those...

Anna, I might be the only person who gets sleepy on steroids. They only made me hyper the first 2-3 times, not any more lol.
