It's more of a French and Spanish thing than a German thing (though we at least have a word for it that doesn't suggest a smelly dairy product). In Germany the time before Christmas is more about German gingerbread, speculaas, stollen, cinnamon stars (some very specific cinnamon cookies) and some simple white cookies with xmas-y themes like stars, angels and fir trees.Although I'm not German, I live in the most German part of Canada.
Maybe French Canada has it? Maybe they have more French xmas stuff, in that case try to get "marrons glacées" (candied chestnuts). Sadly haven't perfected those yet, they are very technical to do and take a lot of time (several days to 1-2 weeks).
