It's an idea @bombastinator. At least if you put something together and sensibly, it can always be repaired or upgraded.

First thing to look at is lipo or li ion, and then chipset and work around the components. Maybe even get a few small pieces fabricated by local Engineering and or sheet metal companies.

Seriously considering this myself, but it's just some thing need the proper equipment to be done. Can only do so much with an electric hand drill, a hacksaw, a file and sandpaper.
Both of these mods (PWM & DNA75 Squonker) were built with basic hand tools.
Please ignore the liberal use of hot glue, I ran out of epoxy at the time and actually detest using hot glue. It's hidden on the inside, nobody sees that anyway. ;)

You do not want to get a regulated squonker if you are happy with your mech/semimech ones now. The regulated will spoil you hard with the ability to put any build you want into an RSA and enjoy it. No more futzing around with coil resistance, 35A cells and the other PiTA aspects that come with unreglated devices. ;)

You have been warned!

If you decide to get one, get a dual cell as they are much more versatile than a single.
I only use single coils with my squonkers since they are all single battery. I always use drippers for crazy dual coil builds. I want the smallest dual 18650 regulated squonker available, I mostly use squonks when I am out and about. Most I have seen are just too big for my taste. The one you got there looks pretty compact though. Would be awesome to have a squonker that could push some crazy dual builds

Yep, me too but my fear of soldering badly keeps preventing me from getting started. I was wanting to make my own dna 75 stabwood squonker. I will do it eventually :D

If you go with a stock case, all you need are innards and a soldering iron. No real need for anything else except a screwdriver and maybe a hex set if you go with screws that way.

Making your own case form scratch like from a block of stabwood does require the kind of wood working skills I don't even come close to having. But getting a CNC Aluminum or 3D printed body eliminates that part. Just practice your soldering skills a bit before tackling the board itself.

The dual cell squonkers are going to be big and heavy, it's the nature of the beast. ;)

If you can still find a VT Inbox, it's a great little (18650) DNA 75 Squonker.

The little black one next to the PWM mod is a 3D printed case from Analog Box Mods here in Canada, I have two of them (75 & 75C) and Dan is an awesome retailer to work with. He no longer sells the 3D printed case but has made the files available on Thingiverse if you want to print your own.

He sells machined versions now.

Morning all
Beautiful morning here, excellent vaping dog walk early today. Will have to tackle the zebra grass this morning but the smell from the wisteria and mock orange will be enjoyable at least.
Wisteria AND mock orange? I'd be in heaven. Two of my faves.

Love that mod. Looks classic. But if I were to go regulated I would want a dual that could push whatever build I could put on it. I like the 250 Drone. It looks smaller and lighter than the Ohm Boy. It appears about the size of a Reauleaux which I could live with. I really like the looks of them also.

Shameless Canadian plug for DIY mod kits. They claim to pretty much ship anywhere.

As for building your own. I’d pick the chipset/board first before deciding on a power source. The battery(s) voltage must not exceed the max input voltage the chipset was designed around. It also must meet the chipset’s voltage requirements

Example:

DNA75C min voltage = 3v, max = 4.2v
DNA250C = min 6v, max 16.8v
Yihi SX485J = min 3.2v, max 4.5v
Yihi SX250 = min 6.3v, max 9v

Knowing this we can choose the correct Lipo (should a Lipo be your objective) or how many cells and their orientation (Series, Parallel, Series/Parallel)

I really want the Reload Squonk Mod. Protected dual parallel.

Great little squonker – very well built of out machined aluminum. Really enjoy using mine. The fire button is extremely sensitive with near 0 travel - kinda like a home button on an iPhone. Some hate it, I actually like it - sans accidentally pressing it when screwing an atty on with exposed coils. Been bit once or twice!

My only con is the proprietary squonk bottle and how expensive it is to obtain replacements here in Canada. $50 shipping for a $10 bottle!! Obviously being in the US you will not have the same issue. Only place I so far have found with replacement bottles is Reload Vapor USA

Sale on them at eFun, good deal, get one while they still have them in stock! ;)
Lost Vape Drone BF DNA 250C Squonk Mod - $116.99

I understand they still have a few problems with those... I don't have one yet but my OG Drone was a PoS, leaky 510, broken button supports, cracked sub frame etc, nothing that the Dremel and a little JB Weld couldn't fix. ;)

@charlie1465 has one of the new ones and can give you the low down on it.

I need to find a 3S or 4S that will fit in a Alpinetech GXL box, is a low mAh say 900 going to give me more runtime than a pair of 20700 in series? Since it's a PWM mod I'll be able to run higher resistance with a 4S and daw less current.

I really love that mod. Looks like it is built like a tank. It has 5 clicks on/off? With a hair trigger I just can't forget to shut it off.

Board has to come first no matter what. Not only power source choice, but the case cutouts. Different for each likely board selection with different buttons in different places and varying screen sizes and placements. The only time I can see it as the second choice would be if you find some amazing case you have to have but will only accept a specific board.

One feature if go for which is extremely cool is a setup like on my Efusion Duo. The sled is removable and connects to the board through Lipo connector rather than any direct solder so you can remove it and insert a Lipo pack in its place. With the DNA 200 board (it's an older box I've had fir several years now) it'll run at 200W with the included Lipo and 133W with the 2 battery sled. You just change your battery selection in eScribe for either one. It might be a little extra work setting up the sled that way but it's truly the ultimate in flexibility and kills off the whole "what happens when my Lipo dies and I can't find the same size one anymore" thing.

I heard about all the issues with the old ones. I have heard mixed reviews about the new ones.

Yes, it could be shut off via the usual 5 clicks and indicates shutting down with a red LED (it’s tiny, just above the fire button). 5 clicks to tun it back on where the LED will flash blue. It also illuminates blue when the fire button is pressed. Few other red flashing sequences indicating the various different errors.

They are lovely scents. Wild honeysuckle isn't budding yet, can hardly wait. Unfortunately the honeysuckle won the battle over the lilac shrub. Honestly the lilac never had a chance.
