I need y’alls brain power... married batteries, stored in a battery box. Pulled them out to charge to full, saw the corrosion and put them aside for recycling. I’ve checked my dual mods, no corrosion in them. None in the battery box. And it’s only on the one end of the batteries. The ends you don’t see look fine. I expected to find some evidence in a mod or corrosion View attachment 865013 on the battery body, but didn’t. What would cause this? I don’t have leaky tanks, or dual squonks that might lead to “wet” batteries. Help???
No expert here, but I don't think pg or vg would cause rust...no water in them. Hot/cold disparity draws moisture from the air and causes condensation, so first thought was putting them away hot in a fairly humid environment, then sealing it in the box. But then I noticed it's on opposite ends of the batteries, which is odd, since you say it is only at one end of each.

Seems you almost had to have had unnoticed moisture in one end of the box, or on the batteries when you put them away? And sealing them in there didn't let it dry out.

I would say they got wet at some point, were they at the top or bottom of the mod? Juice can leak in behind the body and pool in strange places. The negative post of my Inbox squonker is wet on rare occasions without any signs of juice anywhere else. I assume mine is leaking from the 510 and seeping down behind the battery box.

The problem is rust under the positive post area can retain moisture and that can conduct under the right circumstances.
I’m NOT going to use them now, in my book they’re toast. I don’t keep batteries in the mod. These were in a battery box, in a drawer in my closet with all the other batteries in boxes. Cool, dry environment. Wet was what I would expect as a cause, but I don’t know from where. It’s weird that it’s flat on the end, which makes me think whatever mod they were in. My duals are all regulated/non squonk, and look clean as new inside. I really thought I would open one and see evidence of juice, but nope. Sort of stymied. Checked all the other batteries in case, and they’re all fine

Looks like rust to me. May be a silly question but any chance they got exposed to some got some salt or salty water?
Not silly, given my location, and love of coastal fishing. But, the only mod I take on the boat is one of the aegis. Unwrapped, the rust? (That’s what it looks like, def not battery acid) is only on the end. I want to figure it out so I can avoid a repeat

Some of your packages have been on epic adventures.
To say the least. I almost volunteered to give remedial U.S. geography classes to USPS workers.
"Now boys n girls, lets start with north, south, east and west. See that state there? That's Michigan. That's where I live. See this other state here? That's Arizona. That's where somebody else lives. When moving a package from North Carolina, it needs to go north to get to Michigan. Arizona is south. That's the other way. Any questions before we go on? I don't wanna lose anybody."

There is no acid in those cells.

Does it smell sweet? I've been doing a little searching and the only thing that comes close is a possible electrolyte leak from the cell causing that corrosion, @Mooch would know what it is for sure.

Good afternoon Shinys! Vape Mail! Lots of vape mail! These may be some of the very last items that were ordered during the holidays sales to arrive. I hope everyone is getting all their shiny purchases now too!!

I get a laugh from what the Chinese declare on the customs documents.
One is described as a toy car remote control and faucet filters or water diverters. Oy vay!

Im going to open one each day for the next 4 days to slowly wean myself off my shiny vape Mail addiction so I don’t have withdrawals  !

Ok, if I didn’t know you and trust your opinion, I would NOT sniff my batteries  But, as I do, here we go....
Smell test.. not sweet. Maybe a little metallic? I’m not schooled in the scent of rust however
Doesn’t really have a “smell”.
Thank you for trying to figure it out... it’s driving me crazy. I feel like from a safety standpoint, I need to know

The electrolyte supposedly smells sweet, so if that's not there then I doubt it was caused by anything internal to the cell. We'll have to wait and see what the MoochMan says. ;)

When in doubt...get in the Moochman;)
If I thought the battery was the problem, I would. I’m leaning towards something that happened TO the battery. Because they were in a case, I don’t know which mod they were in. But, looking inside my duals didn’t show any yuck anywhere.

Man, you hit the customs lottery!!! My oldest order took the flight out on 1/05, next 1/10. I have 5 that *should* be on US soil by now. I got one package today (spare glass), another finally cleared customs in CT (spare glass and DTs). Tanks and mods are all in limbo, of course

I looked in my mods. I thought I would see something on the inside, or on the battery plate. But, it may have gotten damp and the mod just dried out???

Well, rust smells like blood, and blood smells like rust. Something to do with the oxidized iron in em both. Not sure if this helps or not, hope it does.

Well a built the single coiled Aromamizer and it's a flavor machine for sure. Like the air flow to.
Not the easiest build deck to place a coil though. It goes in easy, but the height is a problem. In the end I sort of judged it by eye through the air holes...am I missing something?

There's a hint... Perhaps you loaded batteries someplace nice and warm -- and with high humidity. Then took your Aegis to a cooler location for an extended period. As warm air will hold more moisture than the cool and the Aegis is sealed, perhaps moisture then condensed and collected in the bottom. And, with salt air and current flow, the impact on your batteries was enhanced.
