Computer peeps, please help.
I was on Microsoft Edge and all of the sudden a beeping sound and the screen comes up says "do not turn your computer off, call this number right away to avoid" and this part I forgot. Either a virus or identity theft. It appeared to be coming from MIcrosoft. My daughter says this has happened to her before and when she called they asked for payment. I did not call. I did Control Alt Delete and shut down and then restarted.
I also got a message that popped up and said change your password as yours has been compromised. That was earlier.
Is this anything to take seriously?

It's a scam, hope you didn't change password by that pop up, could of been a key logger, which means they would know your password now.....

The first thing to do is stop using Microsoft Edge as a browser, it's really unsafe.

I use Firefox, Chrome or SRWare Iron (it's Chrome with all the Google nosy bits removed). You were lucky that it was just a web page you encountered. Actual Ransomware programs like that do the same thing on boot up and encode all of you pictures/documents making them garbage. You are given a phone number to submit a credit card number to and they give you a code to unlock your files... But it's a dice roll if you get any of them back at all.

You do have backups of your important documents and pictures etc on a removable hard drive that's kept away from the computer? If not you should, that way if you are ever actually hit with Ransomware everything is not lost.

it's kinda like a pop-up ad type o fake thing.. used to get it all the time on 'free streaming' sites. i akways just closed the popup and new window in quick succession shifting esc and alt-tab and alt-f4 very quickly, didnt resatrt and was fine. so youre better. no worrworrs
