Who on here uses stainless steel wire for coiling?? I have some questions. Been trying some SS 28g spaced 8 wraps for Mtl. Why am I getting the sudden loud pop after the atty sitting for a bit. Too much wick? Too little wick? Seems to be wicking fine, I’m seeing the usual bubbles. Kanthal 28 is my go to for Mtl. I grabbed a few rolls of SS before the ban. Taste is great. A bit of a pain to wick ‘ only because the wire is so flimsy’ but this sudden pop is annoying and a little scary lol.

I didn't know that that was unique to stainless steel but I do primarily use stainless steel and I do know exactly what you're talking about. I don't know 100% why it does that but it only does it when it's been sitting unused right... so I'm going to assume it's because the e-liquid has trickled into the deck area and has made it a bit too wet and it makes it pop But I could be wrong That's just always what I assumed. I've never had any adverse effect from it but it does startle me I have issues with being startled. It doesn't do that on all of my atomizers or all of my build s but I think anything that reduces liquid just hanging out in the chamber would probably help if my theory is correct and it's because e-juice has had time to trickle its way in so maybe a better block to whatever channel the e-juice comes in from would help. I could be completely wrong though I'm sure someone else will come along that knows for sure

Try a contact or very slightly spaced coil; reduces popping. Might want to play with wattage a bit more as well. Another thing is you may need a bit more wick but personally I'd try a contact coil 1st.

I don’t really get it if I’m building for Dtl mostly just mtl. I wondered if maybe it was just spacing the coils. I use contact with kanthal. Your theory is probably spot on. I’m gonna keep trying to work it out because I like the flavor of SS.

Thanks. I’ll try a contact. I use the spaced with SS because it’s so difficult to pulse the hot spots out without damaging the wire. With basic round wire I can just make a new coil when ready for a rewick.

Gently anneal the wire before wrapping, helps with the springiness.

Her foster calls her Fern. She is a puppy mill rescue and did not previously have a name. She’s just had surgery and I’m sure isn’t looking her best. But what a sweet, sweet face.

I hope her and Georgia get along, as she is way overdue for the sort of home you will give her

There have been many discussions and threads on ECF, and other forums, about this over the years.

I primarily use ss316L clapton and 316L simple round wire. If my RBA has been sitting around for a while it is normal to hear a "pop" with the first hit. On the 2nd hit I get no popping. All I hear is the normal crackling sound that should be there.

Wick density will contribute to popping. Try more. Try less. My preference is for more wick. Find your "happy place" with wicking by experimenting w/less vs more.

I run spaced coils. I don't notice any difference between the coils with less space between loops versus greater space between loops.

If a clapton coil has been sitting around for some time juice will build up on the wire. It'll pop on the 1st hit every single time. You're applying heat/power. Makes sense to me that any excess juice on a coil will pop on the first hit when applying a source of heat.

If yours is popping on every hit then that is not normal. What you have described is normal IMO. Check some of the old threads.

Also, keep the shoulders of your wick off of the center AF block. You don't want any excess juice building up there.

    Good luck

I use SS but not a lot of round wire - as a Clapton SS is plenty sturdy.
If you need something a little stiffer in a round maybe try Ni80.

I don’t know what her story was, but I’d bet she’s had a few litters.
I’m like the name, but I want to see how it fits her.

I have adopted adult dogs a few times. One who came to me sad, from an abuse situation, was named Patches. I changed his name - and he took to it right away - to Rudy. New life, new name, new attitude. It was the right thing for him.
My others, 10 year old Poms, were very loved, they had a person who adored them. I kept their names Holly and Millie because their names were always spoken in love.

If Fern has a sense of well being and being cared for attached to it, I’ll keep it.
But I feel like dogs connect that sound you make to address them to a place and time. And if the name feels like home, great, but if it feels like prison, we need to move forward from that.
I’m very picky with their names. The name I give them shows my respect, their importance to me, their value.

I do know this dog has not been anyone’s beloved baby - I don’t think she’s been horribly mistreated, but she was a possession, not a pet. I just want her to feel like family.
I hope she gets a chance to feel that way with you.

Maybe you are unconsciously wicking a little more loosely than usual because ss wire seems so fragile.

That is just such a great post. Full of wisdom and compassion.

I usually do spaced, especially with SS, but you may have slightly better luck using 26 gauge wire, that was the perfect gauge for me to work with, because it's a bit stronger and deforms less easily.

It will pop more if you don't have enough cotton in there.. you do have to stuff it a bit, and since the wire is flimsy for you I'm thinking you may not have used the amount of cotton you really need, I've done that one before myself.

Also, depending on how long your letting your wick sit saturated, as it keeps getting juicier and juicier the more you leave it sit, some of the popping you may have to deal with if your not vaping very often...

These are just some thoughts, might give you something to consider.

I'm heading out bush for a week or so with my son tomorrow. School holidays.
Remote - no internet or mobile phones.

If anyone's interested - look up Weilmoringle or Enngonia NSW.
Hope you guys stay safe and happy. Lots of love to all and catch you soon.

I hope you enjoy yourself Mate:thumb:
