Exactly as you say Bud. The flavor has improved drastically since I put some serious thought and measure into it.
Because it's a side air flow with only one inlet, the coil position is critical. I took the cap off, rested it into it's position on the deck and eyeballed the height so it hits the bottom of the coil....like in the photo. See how high the coil is...I first had it lower, but that caused the air to hit the middle of the coil...muting the flavor.

Like I said the flavor is very good now. Don't think it can be as good as my bottom air flow ones, but it's damn good...and good enough for me.
I'll play some with the coil's distance to the holes...moving it forward towards the holes with my next rewick.
It does take a bit of tinkering, but well worth it when you taste the improvement.
