Yeah, but the legal fees are almost sure to rob me of most of the return. So the question is, is it worth all of the hassle to get only a little something back?
Small claims court isn't that expensive. You likely do not need a lawyer, just a paper trail and proof of attempting to contact landlord to resolve the issue. Landlord loses he pays all court fees. Hopefully you took pictures once you removed all belongings and furniture.

Unfortunately I did not. I was in a rush to get everything out before the last day of my lease, and while I spent the entire day scrubbing and cleaning the apartment, there was no inspection afterward that I was notified of.

I took pictures before I moved in to make sure they didn't nab me with busted up things when I moved out. I moved out almost a full year ago, though.
What legal fees beyond a Small Claims court filing fee?
Check the filing fee in your state.

In my state the Small Claims filing fee is $94.50 plus service fees. The small claims filing fee varies widely from state to state. You can ask the judge to include those fees as an award in addition to your security deposit. If you decide to consult with an attorney ask he/she about that.

Is it worth it? IMHO, for $650, yes. If your filing fee is $100 and you cannot recoup the fee then you lose that Benjamin Franklin but you stand to gain $550.

If you let this slide your old landlord will surely do the same (if he hasn't already) to other tenants.

Assuming a judge awards in your favor, in my state: "A judgment lien in Wisconsin will remain attached to the debtor's property (even if the property changes hands) for ten years." A judgment can greatly affect ones financial position.
I don't think my paper trail is all that strong. I have the original lease agreement and I have call/text logs to prove I've attempted to try contacting him, but that's about it. I have pictures I took from when I first moved in, and that's it.

This guy is super rich - probably one of the wealthiest in Minnesota. He owns tons of property/buildings around MN and in ND. When I originally moved in, I did all the paperwork directly with him, and not the LLC that he uses to rent the building out. I have this strong gut feeling that he innately created a loophole when I first moved in, so that he could just f-off when I moved out.

Non vape related: my new phone, Samsung S22 ultra, will be in today or tomorrow. Also finally tackling the dreaded all things vape storage organization issues. Thankfully I don't have near as much gear as some. DIY is whole other issue as far as quantity tho.

Find a college close by a call about a free consultation with legal students. Pretty all institutions that offer law degrees has these services.

Okay, that's good to know. Maybe I should have the post removed, lol.
I don't think you need to remove it, just add this isn't the safest option for inexperienced mech users and make clear this is not the nc2. Some still love and use their og nc but they are experienced.

It doesn't matter if he's super rich or that he owns multiple properties and buildings in two states. Some of the rich ripoff people all the time. In effect he stole your $650. Landlord/tenant cases are heard all the time in small claims courts across the USA.

In Minnesota the filing fee for conciliation court (small claims) is between $65 and $80. Per this link...
That link has nearly everything you need to know about small claims court in MN.

You can easily tidy up whatever paperwork you have so it looks presentable (printed) and professional. I would print and use the photos you took when you moved in and state they are exactly how the unit looked when you vacated.

Have you tried communicating directly with the LLC? That would be my very first call. They will be able to contact the landlord on your behalf and relay all the information. Who knows, getting your $650 back might be that simple.

    Somewhere between here and there
It's frustrating, but as much as you might want to loose your temper don't. Take the high road Hitt.

When you call back use the dealerships main number and ask for the General Manager. Explain to him/her how the person they put in charge of your daughter's car repairs gave you his cell number and that he has been completely unresponsive. Tell them you find that kind of customer service completely unacceptable. I would also talk with the Service Manager.

I would also tell them you are considering informing Kia of their poor customer service. Kia won't like hearing this about one of their dealerships. Especially for a well known problem (of their own making).

In my experience when you take matters to those who are actually "in charge" you receive the proper attention and better service.

    Good luck!!!
I finally did get a call from my guy at the dealership. Turns out he's been off for two days and no one let me know when I called. Hopefully the car will be done Monday like he said and he can get the insurance claim filed properly.

    Morning shinies ;)

For Antipodean customers FT has always been attractive because of the cheap (and fast if you choose the right option) shipping and huge range of product. 3F looks the same price until you get to checkout then the shipping adds $. I've also found the CS at FT to be the best of the Chinese retailers, plus their clever gift certificate/PayPal workaround makes it easy for me.

Perfectly put! Plus when PayPal ditched vaping, some stores like Cigabuy and 2fdeal and stopped shipping to NZ due to no payment options. If FT do end up pulling the plug, 3F and Aliexpress will be where I go.

Despite the fact that I have enough screws, o-rings, replacement glass and maybe even drip tips to last me 40+ years :sneaky:

I actually just got a text back from the guy, lol. Couldn't be bothered to respond 3-4 months after, but now he will? I'm still not all that optimistic. Again, a gut feeling tells me he's going to say "Well, we needed this much for carpet cleaning (there was no carpet), and general cleaning, etc, etc. Your deposit return is $0.17."

    We'll see, I guess.

The apartment I previously moved out of, he was part owner of (which I didn't know at the time), and they had me pay $200 to get the carpet cleaned, and then charged me another $150 for carpet cleaning after I moved out...

I did some digging... In Minnesota, "a landlord is allowed to charge a cleaning fee if the tenant agrees to it in the rental agreement or if the cleaning is required to return the unit to its initial condition past expected wear and tear."

Did you agree to any cleaning fees in your lease?

A landlord cannot charge a tenant for normal and expected wear and tear.

In the previous apartment, did you agree to carpet cleaning fees (x2) in the rental agreement/lease? If not, then by MN law, you were ripped off for $350. ((( Unless of course you were a serious party animal and trashed the carpet. )))

Read the attached PDF's from the Minnesota Attorney General. One is "Landlords and Tenants Rights and Responsibilities" the other is on "Vacating Your Apartment". Both contain excellent information.

I only lived there for a month or two. The carpet still had the "wavey" look from the previous cleaning. There was no carpet in my room, but the closet had carpet. The only thing I ever put in there was my DJ gear, lol.

I'm sure in the fine print somewhere, I agreed to pay for however many times they wanted me to pay for carpet cleaning. Isn't that those rental contracts always work?

I always read everything in contracts. If I don't understand something or if something doesn't make sense I ask my attorney to look it over. You should read them for your own protection. Items in nearly all contracts can be negotiated. Things can be deleted and/or added as needed by either party.
