As I’ve been going through my stash I’ve found several of my old atties that hadn’t been really cleaned up before putting them away.Hit a problem yesterday that I hope someone can help me with.
I decided to break out a KFL from the stash. It was SS, one of two I have but never used. No idea where it came from. It was set up with a 9 wrap coil made of very thin wire, definitely not one of mine. Guess I got it used. Should have cleaned it up when I got it but it's been sitting in the bag like that for many years.
I took it apart, including the deck. It was really hard to get the pin out and the deck insulator is still stuck in place. The problem is that everything is coated with some kind of hard shiny brown film. I can't even push the pin back in because of the film on the pin and the inside of the hole. It looks a bit like rust but it isn't. I scraped a little off the pin and the metal looked fine underneath. But it's really hard. I could scape it off the pin but it's on the inside of the holes and the insulators.
Anyone have thoughts on what the film might be and how I can remove it? Dried up juice? I gave all the pieces 30 mins in the U/S cleaner with Dawn and nothing happened.
I also found a hardened brown film on the deck area and around it.
I ended up soaking them in hot water and Dawn for a day or two then rinsed them off.
I then used a toothbrush and was able to brush most of the brown gunk off. Some I was able to scrape off with my fingernail so I didn’t scratch it. I might’ve used an emory board on any flat surfaces.
Give that a try and see if it works for you too.
