Well, I am cooling my jets today, currently watching the pretty snow come down. Not going out. Nobody, including me, can drive in this stuff out here. I used to be a good snow and bad weather driver when I lived back in CT, but since being here for over 10 years I find I have lost that skill or the desire to test it.
They just opened a Nashville Vapor shop in the same area as the CVS and Hobby Lobby so when I do get out I will go there too. They are supposed to stock the kanthal wire. I know I will pay more for it, but I will get a bit of the 28ga and 30ga and try to figure out the difference and which I prefer to make coils out of.
Is there a thread or site someone knows of that I can go to to learn about what gauge wire to use and why a microcoil is better than a 4 or 5 wrap coil and why use 28ga instead of 30ga. Somewhere I can get this knowledge?

FYI:
Although I do not understand most of it - nor even want to get involved or started building "Stuff" like coils - I happen to know that there is one person here on ECF who is absolutely excellant about sharing information and provides a wealth of information on his "Blogs" and on a number of another threads when people ask (Here are 2: http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/fo...oaks-contest-26-multiple-winners-winners.html and http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/fo...t-helpful-information-promotions-coupons.html ) that have post concerning RBA/RDA and building coils too . . . His Name is - "Schnarph" . . . "You" can find his Blog here: E-Cigarette Forum - Schnarph - Blogs
I am also pretty sure he would answer any questions that "You" may have too - Just send him a PM and tell him "Uncle" sent Ya' . . .(Oh Boy - Now am I in for it - better let him know . . .

There you go Erised. Let's get into the spirit of this thing. DH and I always kid each other about him digging a hole and burying me in the backyard. Those stories lasted for the whole year we were building the pool and pool house (which is now a glorified shed to house the lawnmower and other sundry tools). Big ideas and big dreams do not always turn out the way you initially plan. We have a friend that has 35 acres in the middle of nowhere out here. That is where the body will probably go. DH always says he will not die on me. He is not done making me miserable yet. It goes both ways. And then we laugh.
ooooh! Just looked out the window. The sleet has turned to snow. Wonder what other goodies Mother Nature has in store for us today. What a winter!
Per your suggestion I spent the afternoon reading all the material offered in that blog. I have never and do not ever want to chase clouds of vapor but I based my decision on my personal feelings. Having read all about it I now know that I do not have a death wish and having spent a lot of years with my face I don't want to exchange it for a bundle of bloody bandages. I have ordered a mech mod in case the FDA does unspeakable things to the vaping community but micro and nano coils and huge clouds of vapor are not on my bucket list. Thanks for the info.
my itaste mvp works just fine lolill get into that sometime down the line for now im good with the vapor production i get.. and Hello everyone hope ur day was great/goodFYI:

I heard that there was some forum dedicated to e-cigarettes somewhere. Maybe if you googled it? ;-)
Ok, enough of being a smarta$$.
The lower the number, the larger the wire, and the lower the resistance per foot.
For Kanthal, 28 gauge has a resistance of slightly less than 1/2 ohm per inch. (0.44 ohms/in). If you wanted to wind a 1.5 ohm coil, you would use about 3 inches of wire. 30 gauge has a resistance of about 0.7 ohms/inch, so a 1.5 ohm coil would use a little more than 2 inches. You can see that if you wanted to wind a large coil, you would use the 28-gauge; the 30 gauge would be a smaller coil (either fewer turns or a smaller diameter).
The term "microcoil" usually means that the turns of the coil are touching each other. This is different than etherealink's coil, where the turns are spread apart. When the coils are touching each other, it heats up faster and runs a little hotter, because the turns heat each other up. (This is why a microcoil will turn red at the center first, and then the glow will spread to the ends). In a looser coil, the turns are far enough apart that it's as if each turn is "on it's own" and doesn't get heated up by its neighbors, so it tends to glow all at the same time. Of course, microcoils also tend to be smaller-diameter coils; if you squished etherealink's coil so the turns were touching it would be a very very short coil!
Because microcoils have such a small diameter, often the wick is put outside the coil (below, to the side, etc.) because it's hard to get much juice to flow through a tiny wick in the center, and vapor made in the center of the coil can't escape. But with a microcoil you need to pay attention to how the airflow works, because the vapor needs to "get out" (and it doesn't escape well if it has to travel through wet wicking material!) On the other hand, with a regular coil, the wick is inside, because that provides a great path for the vapor to escape; as long as air can pass over the whole coil assembly, the vapor flows freely.
Microcoils are a bit extreme; the only reason I've been dabbling in them is that an EVOD head provides very little room for a coil (and I really want my evod's to work a little better). They can work great if you get everything right, but if you don't they just don't work. They're also a lot harder on the eyes and hands! A loose coil is much easier to get working well, because the geometry isn't anywhere near as picky. Also a loose coil doesn't need to be a perfect spiral, if some turns are a little farther apart, or closer, it really doesn't make much difference.
I'd recommend you start with a regular, loose coil. Either 28 or 30 gauge will work, although the 28 gives you more length to play with.
