I think I get it now. According to this blog (link provided by rdwg in another thread),
Made in the USA E-Liquid - Well, Sort Of ... | E-Cig Express Blog
, none of the nicotine used in e-juice (or pharmaceutical nicotine products) made here or anywhere else is actually synthesized in the US. I have seen such claims made elsewhere. If that is so, it seems likely that most of the Certificates of Analysis provided by vendors come from their suppliers in India or China. And because a big selling point for domestic e-juice is that it is "Made in the USA," even though components are produced elsewhere (that is actually common for
many industries, not just e-juice), the vendors do not include the name, location, or credentials from the lab reports.
Does that put me off? Actually, no, it is somewhat reassuring. Having no idea why someone would omit the most important part of a Certificate of Analysis, the name of the lab, was quite troublesome for me. But if I see a rational motivation that is reasonable considering the current state of the industry, that goes a long way toward turning off my alarm bells (even if it is less than entirely forthcoming of the vendors). The fact that the nic is actually produced in another country is perhaps a little disappointing, but if it is the same stuff used in gum, patches, inhalers, etc., well that is what is available, and certainly safer than smoking, considering that is known to kill you, and retail cigarettes contain other things beside tobacco that are possibly more harmful than the tobacco itself.
But would I like to see more transparency? Yes. Is that enough to make me anywhere near as afraid of vaping as I am of cigarettes? Absolutely not.
