It just hit me that it's actually been almost 3 years to the day since I stirred Gutter out of his lair for a brief few months. I went lurking arpund on the net and everything I'm finding is like, three years old. Hope all is good with him.

I've definitely become the elder statesmen of both my grandparents limb of the tree of life. I found out that my cousin, the oldest of two sons among my mother's family passed away a few days ago at 71. I wasn't sure if he was older than me but he was less than a month younger. I really only knew him and his brother from teenage years although, it turns out, he was living with his mother before she passed away, only a few miles from where I live.

My uncle and his wife were pretty much drunk the only time I was around them and the kids represented how they grew up so we never were on the same page. I let them know when my uncle died because I thought she might like to know and go to his funeral and I found out my aunt had passed away over a year earlier. I then contacted them again because she was in the will and I knew I'd need a death certificate and possibly they would get her portion of the estate. He never got back to me and I had to track down their stepbrother to get a copy of the cert. Fortunately the way the will was written, her share was not passed on so I didn't have to deal with them. Apparently he and his brother were battling according to their half brother. Needless to say, I won't worry about going to his funeral.

Yeah, it's been three years, his first in ages was after I popped into his house unexpectedly on my way back from Texas. That was pretty close to right now and he hung around for two or three months and vanished again.

The reason I thought of him was that article appeared in my email and I immediately thought of him. I checked the other sites that I knew he was involved with but everything seemed top have died off around that same time. I wonder how he's doing.

Got into a can of Granit Blue white portion. It's interesting. Supposedly an herbal snus, buts reads more mild bergamot and black pepper. Goes great with an IPA, but I probably won't buy again.

I've been on the day shift (7a-3p) for the last couple weeks training in our new trim shop. After being on afternoons (3p-11p) for a decade it's kind of nice.

It's an absolute clown show over here. We've been trying to system fill for the last 4 days but we simply don't have parts available. They wanted 175 built this week and we built 21 yesterday. They're fixing quality issues with 3M tape and glue.

Last week a lady working a job down from me got her feet pinned under a truck carrier. Of course the disconnect wasn't functional to get it off the conveyor dog to push it back off her, so we had 30 guys lift this 2 ton carrier just enough to get her out. Crushed the hell out of her feet. GM of course tried to blame it on her to get out of paying workman's comp but our launch coordinator had it written up as a safety issue which of course management ignores until someone gets hurt.

The next day I was millimeters away from taking a paint fixture to the skull. 5lb chunk of steel fixed to the hood striker so we can use a hoist to open the hood to attach the struts. It's part of my job to remove it after the struts are on and normally I'm right under it but was thankfully zoned out off to the side and it missed my head as I rushed in to get it. They tried blaming that one on me to avoid doing near miss paperwork saying I should have double checked the lock before opening the hood. I said I'd be more than happy to give it a look if GM was inventing x-ray vision glasses for me...

I'm glad that it missed you Waho. That's some pretty scary stuff. Speaking of scary stuff, I had a machine I was working on catch fire a few weeks ago. It evidently had an internal short in one of the transformer coils and within seconds of turning it on, it sparked and caught fire. I had to use an extinguisher to put it out. I immediately asked our purchasing guy to order me a new extinguisher and he jacked me around for two weeks until I lost my temper and went off on him and my boss. Needless to say, I had a new one the next day. It's sad that it takes that to get someone to do their job sometimes.

Glad you're ok. It's amazing how hard they'll fight against a $50 fire extinguisher when the potential human/property damage is exponentially higher.

The bigger fire we had here they didn't evacuate the whole building, just the affected departments, until the fire chief showed up and threatened management here with 1400+ charges of attempted negligent homicide or whatever it was.

We had 2 forklifts collide last week. There have been numerous complains about one driver for months but they ignored it. It really is amazing how much they will overlook untl someone gets hurt. They preach safety first but management only harps on output. Safety and going as as fast as possible don't always play well together and often end badly for quality and safety.

Truer words have never been spoken.

I often have to set the example for lower seniority folk or speak up for temps as I'm closing in on a decade working at GM and know the system. You've got to be an ...... for your own safety because they certainly don't care.

Yahoo, that sounds like it would have been nasty if it hadn't missed, your lucky day. That poor lady.

Hitt it sounds like they'd prefer to burn down the building. However, it did remind me that my fire extinguishers probably should be checked. I have no idea how long they've been sitting there unused.

FC, your post reminded me of what it must be like at Amazon. When the live in was going strong with Amazon, she used to buy supplies from Uline. They have a warehouse within 45 minutes of here. Rather than paying for shipping she'd do pickups on her supplies. Two or three times she roped me into making the run. Waiting for them to find her order in the warehouse area, I watched the forklift operators flying around in there. It was crazy how they flew around.

FC that comment provided a belly laugh. I'm only 4 years away from 21 years in retirement but I can already drink 24/7 if I had that inclination.

Glad you didn't squash your grape Waho.

Place I worked for back in the day learned a harsh lesson in OHSA safety and fines when one the forklift drivers took a left turn right off a loading dock. Luckily he wasn't hurt but man did OHSA sock it to the company for failing to have safety measures in place. The company I work for now has moved towards lean warehousing so no more multiple forklifts zooming around. They went through and organized all the warehouses to use order pickers on a guided wire system that allows only one picker at a time in each isle. Once the picker is locked onto the guide wire it cannot move left or right, only forward and reverse, keeping it in the center of the isle. Work related injuries are way down and we haven't had to replace any racking in quite some time. We still use fork lifts to load/unload containers but only on the loading dock.

That sounds like a great system Rebel. I've seen those on tv. Less risk, fewer errors, better inventory control. They couldn't run at our facility though. We have multiple production facilities and even more offsite warehouses and yet there isnt an empty floor space in the warehouse. They are literally double stacking the skids on the floor in addition to a 4 tier racking system in a building with about 500 rack locations for full pallets. You have to clear out the floor before you can even get into a row to pick anything off the racks. And there isn't anywhere to put the stuff you clear out.

It's well beyond out of control. I have never seen it this over stuffed. Half our loading dock is parked trailers full of materials and product. And yet we are still all about production numbers, running all out 24/7. I don't know how the warehouse crew get anything in or out the door in that mess. There can be 4 to 6 tow motors moving in production and warehouse at any given time. If anything, it's a wonder we don't have more crashes and rack damage than we have.

Our current shop has hi-lo's and tuggers whipping around all over the place. The biggest issue being vehicle on pedestrian accidents. Within the last year they installed G force sensors that when triggered shut you down, lock you out of the computer, and hit your assistance call so an investigation can be done. Not unlike MI's roads, the lanes in the plant are full of bumps/potholes that are enough to trigger the sensors, along with hitting things like pillars/racks/other vehicles too hard. The onboard awful driver narc has helped out tremendously.

Our new shop was designed with the assembly lines surrounded by sequencing/kit cells and the truck lanes to supply the cells outside that. We also have these enormous robots to unload semi trailers onto conveyors that bring parts right to the line. In theory this eliminates 100% of hi-lo and over half the tugger traffic where the most people are.

I can't believe it's mid May and I just fired up the fireplace again. The next three days are mid 40s with a high of 50 plus rainy. I'm probably going to need to retrieve more wood before it warms up. I better get to the basement and empty those dehumidifiers.
