You should have stayed in. I have to admit that once I made Chief and then Senior Chief I never did so little for so much in my life before or since. I you want to be the next higher rank you have to demonstrate you can do the job of the next higher rank. Given that I had 5 First Class working for me I didn't have to really do squat other than make sure they did what they were supposed to! :) I loved helping Det guys get qualled but, only if they were cool. Treated them just like they were my folks but, I know that was a rarity because I was in the DET business my last 5 years in. Attached to Fleet Tactical Readiness Group, Atlantic. Provided deception service and Space and Electronic Warfare Expertise to Staffs that required one of the other or both. I wrote the original deception plan for Desert Storm as a Senior Chief. Was great actually, fought a war and never left the states. Satellites are wonderful things. Just like being there with beer available. Been there for real to. Staff Watch Officer during the Black Hawk Down debacle. Stood watch for 72 hours straight without relive. They even broke out the industrial strength NO-Doze for me!!
Respect!

Day-um, talkin' 'bout 'carpet bombing' da back porch wid one of my fave topics! Was gonna group my tagged posts, but sorry, at dis point, I'll just go wid da flow...

I guess the military iz like vaping. Gotta have lottsa backups! :D

Our mil did up til 'recently'!

for what it's worth....the Air Force was originally the Army Air Corps. I had an uncle who joined the Air Corps and retired from the Air Force. Why they split it....I have no idea (see my previous post). And as to what the Air force does today.....I can assure you that the fighter jets I saw in the sky taking off from NAFAC and headed for NYC on 9/11 were Air Force. There is a reason and a purpose for EVERY branch of the service...........;)

Your last sentence is ever so true, even in da face of da current 'general' attitudes...

Oh I hear ya, yidds. Glad to have em all. Just wondering why so much overkill. (Not that I'm knocking that either)

How's dat workin' out wid ISIS and da resultant refugees?

Hahahahaha!! I'm a firm believer in overkill, myself... why use a hammer if you can use a pile-driver!

Luv da way ya think! PEACE THROUGH POWER (Anyone notice we aren't speakin' German nor Japanese, thanx to our Greatest Generation?)

...never forget that day...

I know where I was when the news broke and my gut retching awareness watching the second Tower hit. Some want to avoid the memories. Not moi... I am glued to the annual 9/11 specials in the same way I watch every Pearl Harbor special. Don't care if it's an oiled soaked and burnt sailor in a harbor or an innocent secretary opting for an eighty+ stories plunge into downtown NY...

Apparently they were NOT used to...

... da residual naval (possibly navel also) berth/head aromas!

I go to Veteran Day festivities at my friends kids school and enjoy it very much. Very touching. :)

Several of my most moving experiences were when I was invited to give personal presentations, due to my vet status, in a few elementary classes for Veterans Day festivities! The innocence was overwhelming and their celebrations brought tears...

I've often wondered the same thing. In the navy we take our airfields with us. We don't need no stinking bases to fly from.

At least ours don't sink! Not countin', I had the option of when, where and if I wanted to swim...

Marines are the tip of thr spear. The US's first response force. Everybody else shows up later. That's why they are joint with the Navy. They fight, we get em there with all their stuff and they have a bunch of it. :)

Amen!

Dunno much about anything, :) but don't they fly the same plane? So a navy plane, while the same (say F-16) model is built differently for each service?

Gary,

There is no one airframe that can handle ALL the missions required to get 'er done!

IMO, F-4 Phantom was probably da best example of a modern sea and land platform. The Navy bought it first as a carrier capable attack platform. Due to da 'Nam 'engagement' and changing war tactics (both sides), the Air Force procured a bunch of 'em. Even then, there were many structural, operational and tactical differences. Won't bore y'all wid da details and/or the whys.

Someone mentioned sumpin' 'bout inter-service rivalries. Hell, my Dad luv'd to relate da ol' WWII Army vs.Navy vs. Marine 'encounters'. But my experience in 'Nam was quite da opposite. We KNEW we HAD to rely upon each branch and each other to get our missions accomplished and hopefully return home to hug our loved ones! All too many didn't have that opportunity (over 58,000) , thanks to fvcking/fvckless politicians!

Oops, did I just offend someone? Take it up with your chaplain... oh, wait... never fvcking mind... <Google might be your friend or a nemesis>

OTOH, day-um what a stream of moisture sweeping up from da Gulf! Please take care and be safe...

It's a day many of us will never forget and I hope never to feel it again. I was at work in a craft store....just a few miles from NAFAC. Just before my lunch break the manager called out that the first tower had been hit. I was outside on my break shortly after that and listened to the sounds of the jets and watched them taking off.....a chilling sight. The next day we found out that one of our regular customers had lost her Father in DC. He was the pilot on the plane that hit the Pentagon. There are a large number of people in NJ that commute to NYC every day for work.....so It hit all of us particularly hard..

For any who don't already know....I was living in NJ, and had been for some time prior to what happened that day.
(((Yiddle))) Painful memories for you.

Lets see 911

My parents were on a United flight from London to JFK when I went in the living room and flipped on the TV. THe news was saying 2 united flights had vanished off the radar. No other info. No flight numbers. No impacts at that point.

I watched in shock as every bit of that whole nightmare day came across the TV screen. It wasn't until nearly 8 that night that my parents called and informed me their flight had been turned back to heathrow. By then I knew they had NOT be on one of the planes that were crashed but it was still good to hear their voices.

I am with you Iffy every 911 I watch all the documentarys of the day. I NEVER want to forget even the most horrid detail.

Went to an airshow years ago and could not believe how small (aka really itty-bitty) da Harrier is! Gary Coleman would have to exhale to climb over and squeeze into dat cockpit...

OMW Myrany...how awful for you!!

Yes, I also watch every thing pertaining to that horrific day, too. I remember running to a restaurant from a Walmart.... left a full cart stranded in the aisle.... to watch in horror and disbelief what was happening to our country.

Funny how it's the Marine Corps Fighter. I knew some fairly large guys that flew them. They said it was bigger on the inside. I always responded yeh right, that's why it takes five minutes to cram yourself in em. :)
