An example of a common false that is all over ECF.

It was explained to me that the mesh size depends on the PG/VG content of you juice.
(Rough ratios)
250-- 100-50/50 higher VG
325-- 70/30-60/40 PG/VG
400-- 100-80/20 higher PG

Proven scientifically:
Viscosty doesn't matter and 325 will not wick better than 400 or 500.

comparing oranges to oranges
PG will rise higher in a 400 mesh than on a 325 mesh.
Vg will rise higher in a 400 mesh than on a 325 mesh.
On the same 400 wick PG will rise higher than VG because of cohesion forces, but it will not rise higher on 325 than on 400,
All will rise higher and faster on #500

hi there
I've just get mine today but I got 2 Sheet , but sorry for that am not so good with that witch one is the 500 :D and what is the second one :D ??
I thought the 500 is the one that is heavey than other and it's look more to silver. Am I right ? and what is the second 400 or 325 ??
Besides the light tip, they usually write in pencil the mesh size at one of the corners.

On the edge of insanity..
Hey BJ, I have a question for you kind Sir. What would happen if I placed a piece of silica wick as the center for the SS mesh? Thanks.
I thought about this the other day. The main reason not to use silica is to avoid the micro fibers that come off, but if it were wrapped in SS mesh then you would be avoiding that. I too am curious if this would work.

here :d
Thank you BJ for this "Game Changing" thread!
thanks to my friend Pega ;) for sharing the link to this thread :toast:
and thanks to all who contributed their knowledge & humor :thumb::thumb:

about 25 pages into the thread -- we(my brother & I) were sold & placed our order, while we process, de-program & prepare our rolling fingers  being a perfectionist that he is :rolleyes: my brother has 2 areas he would like to "be absoultly certain about":

1) "how does 1 go about doing the 'counter-sinking'?"
2) "will a plugged fill hole inhibit the capillary action?"

TIA for the answers :) :) & please don't cut off our rolling fingers :nun: if these 2 questions have already been answered :blush:

P.S. because my brother has no ECF account -- I did the "like"s for the both of us :D:D

I have to admit 'b', before your findings here, I was under the same misconceptions as you pointed out. Since I don't use any VG in my juice, I always just assumed it was right. Thanks for taking the time to do these experiments.

Yea we all were mate. Took the crazy brain of BJ to turn it all upside down. It's funny because when you take the time to think about it, it makes perfect sense. If I was goop, no doubt it would be easier to make my way up lots of smaller holes than larger ones.

I have never done any counter sinking on mine. Unless you have a very thick cap it is not necessary, but there are many cone shaped dremel diamond bits that will do it. A plugged fill hole can effect capillary action especially for people that do long draws and chain vape. A vacuum can form in the tank that wants to draw the juice back down. I always keep a fill hole open to balance the pressure in the tank. You can reduce it to a minimum size if you fear leaks. I have not had any problem with leaks just leaving them open, but I don't lay mine horizontal for long.

thanks BJ for the answers :) "cone shaped dremel diamond bits" added to my brother's Home Depot shopping list  as for the fill holes -- I use the tips of toothpicks for mine & my brother uses small pieces of mesh for his, I take that for optimal wicking -- they'll have to go then  how about use pieces of lowered #ed mesh that have bigger opening areas, ie:270, 250 or 200 mesh... can they be used to keep the leaking to a minimum & still give enough breathing room? just wondering

I know you've pointed it out more than once in this thread that your tests are purely for wicking properties and makes perfect sense but have you tested these methods horizontally against looser wicks which i'm also assuming would allow gravitational flow more, I ask because I'd assume most people tip the PV's horizontally so that may be a more accurate test to see what real world usage of each wicking method would work best.

Hey BJ, I have a question for you kind Sir. What would happen if I placed a piece of silica wick as the center for the SS mesh? Thanks.

On my 1st try on the dud, i using cotton on the center of the rolled mesh, it help wicking , but it cause the overflood too :(
using about 3cm wick and a bit of cotton on the center before i roll it, i dont know what cause the overflood, is the wick not tight or the cotton.

and then i found this 500 method, i change it to #500 lol...
