@Rossum just bought the Boulder with extra pods and some salt nic juice. Now can anyone tell me about nic salts? I have 4L of 100 mg nic and I know nothing about salt juice.
Regular nicotine is quite alkaline. Protonating it using some acid (benzoic, citric, etc) turns it into a salt, thereby reducing its pH, and making high nicotine concentrations more tolerable/palatable.

If you're happy vaping what you've been vaping, don't fret it. Salts are primarily useful if a person needs a really high level of nic, either because they've developed a huge nic tolerance, or because they're using a very low-powered device. I got some nic salt juice recently because I wanted some liquid with a much higher nic level than I normally vape because I knew I'd be stuck in a trade-show booth for nine hours a day for five days straight with minimal opportunities to vape.

One drawback: Nic salts seem to kill coils more quickly than regular nic, at least this is my perception.

I'm sure he'll chat with you about snus if you msg him here - Daily Vape TV at FB or at his YT channel here - Daily Vape TV at YT

Thanks for the info @Mowgli, I knew next to nothing about snus but then the folks on the What's Under Your Lip, Nose, etc. page all educated me, LOL. I mainly want some Swedish stuff because they have so many more strengths and flavors, until then I will just use American General (which is actually Swedish Processed snus) and very not expensive, you can get if from a bunch of gas stations. Really, only the cost of shipping is what makes Swedish snus cheaper, so once you order over a certain amount, it does get a lot cheaper.

Interestingly it was right in the middle of my smoking relapse and I'd say less anxiety about "getting my nic" over long stretches of time was HUGELY helpful. I over focus a lot so even if I'm just doing a chore, it's hard to remember vape breaks, etc. It really helped me stop again, frankly.

But, it's always good to have more resources, so while I may not message this guy, I may definitely check out his channel, thank you :)

@leftyandsparky , I used it early on because my throat was torn up with it. It's reportedly smoother (although you can get "harsher" formulations, I think.) I wound up DIY with it, it hasn't been my perception that it's harder on coils, but I was using crazy high VG before I started DIY with nic salts, so it's hard to say.

If you want to try it without too much expense, most places will send a sample for the cost of shipping so if have anything else to order, you could include a sample with the order. I have had no complaints about nic river nic salts, they should come a very pale yellow and stay that way.

Nic salts are reportedly in some places "more rapidly bioavailable" but I have noticed ZERO difference other than being able to go way high on nic if a person wants. I have also heard they keep better for longer as they are more stable, again I have no idea.

Lastly if you want to convert your own, you can do so fairly easily I think, I know there is a thread (possibly closed by now) that talks about the process using citric acid I read part of that thread and it seemed the main issue folks were having was getting the citric acid to dissolve and then you need to get the Ph right but I don't know a ton about it.

I am not adverse to nicsalts but I only mix them at 18 mg/ml which is exactly how I vape regular nic. I finished out my stash with Heartland's cheapest nic offering but I was in a hurry and wanted to get it over with. Slightly harsher but not really an issue at this point and for me the cost savings were significant enough for me to just do it after trying their nic and making sure I could tolerate it, etc.

Right now I’m using 16mg and he told me that he still craved and he didn’t get the nicotine rush from it compared to a cigarette. So I honestly thought he might need the salts. If I could get away with making, let’s say 30 mg without having to purchase nic salts I rather do that.

I would buy a commerical salt juice, maybe 35mg, see how he gets on with it.

I'm not a flavor freak, I think most commercial juices are way overflavored. So when I wanted to try salts, I bought 45 and 50mg juices, and just added VG/PG to get them to the nic level I wanted.

I vape 3mg DTL, usually 12mg MTL. I keep some 30mg salts in my Minifit pod as my backup. Even in the Minifit, 30mg salts give me a solid nic rush with a few puffs comapred to my 3mg DTL or 12mg MTL setups.

Something in the 30mg range might work well for him. If not, bump it up a bit. I'm thinking if you are running 30mg or higher though, you probably want salts. If you go to buy some for DIY, make sure you get the 'smooth' salts. Some places (Nic River, etc) sell a smooth and 'hit' forumlation of salts. I personally don't want the extra throat hit. The 'hit' formualtions might be more aimed to lower concentrations, not sure if they are inteded to be vaped at real high levels.

The 30mg unflavored I've got in the Minifit right now is made from Nude Nic's smooth salts. It has a decent throat hit to me.

He might do fine with 30 depending on the strength of the delivery device and how he reacts to nic.

Some people really don't much care for less throat hit at all, I know my husband likes it and a big reason he DISLIKES my juices is because they are smooth. Some vapers want to "feel" the nic.

I'd say try it first with 30, if it's too harsh, you might want to do a combination like 10 mg nicsalts and 20 mg regular nic. There are folks who are using both in a mix to get the exact "desired" sort of throat hit effect while still getting enough nicotine per puff, etc.

I'd say if you are wanting to convert the husband and he's at all into it, getting a small sample of nic salts and then letting him try EITHER mix and see what he likes might be useful? Kind of a strike why the iron is hot. If you have nic spilling out of your freezer already and more than enough I might consider converting a small amount and still doing the same experiment if you are up for All That (when I was quitting I was not up for All That.)

He just wants to try vaping and he doesn’t feel that he gets what he needs from my stuff. I’m going to try the boulder and salt juice out 1st and see how that goes. Ordered today so maybe next week I can gauge him and go from there.

This may seem like bad advice to some and I apologize if it comes across that way. Does your husband smoke regular store bought already rolled up cigarettes? (Marlboro, Camel, etc.) When I switched to vaping I did it totally unintentionally, I just didn't want a cigarette anymore so I switched completely. But, I mostly smoked pipe tobacco that I rolled in the filtered tubes myself, so I think there may have been less of the "gotta have it" chemicals of a regular cigarette. Maybe if the pod and salts don't do it for him, you could get him to try the roll your own (you may even have to make them for him) for a few months to get him weaned off the BT coctail, and then see if he can step into the vape from there.

I didn't care much for my Boulder Rock. But don't use anything higher than 50VG or they will burn up. Also don't chain vape them since they will burn up. And they are a bit leaky and when you wipe them down, careful about that pod plug. As it likes to fall off while wiping and that tiny thing gets lost easy. The good news is they are very cheap (moneywise). And they are very light (since they are made of plastic). :)

He smokes pall mall menthol. I went ahead and bought the 50 mg menthol salt ejuice to use with the pod. If anything maybe he will smoke less and that’s the goal I’m looking for. Your post was not bad advice! He’s been a smoker for 28 yrs. and I think he’s starting to realize it’s time to stop.

Do you have to have a needle to refill?

I also smoked Pall Mall menthol. I found Halo Menthol Ice to be the best flavor coming off the Pall Malls. Possibly another option if the salts don't do the trick. Good luck helping him if he's ready!

Looks like you've got a lot of options here to try. Hope that one of them works for him. Keep us posted to how he's doing :thumb:

I smoked Pall Mall menthol too. But, a year or so before I switched, I had to buy non-menthol because I couldn't find any cheap menthols at the time. It was horrible. But, I got used to it by the time I finished smoking them.

After that I decided to stick to non-menthol so I wouldn't have to go through that transition again. I didn't get the same pleasure from non-menthol. But, the most important thing was that I could keep on smoking for cheap, one way or another.

If I hadn't made that transition already, I think switching to vaping would have been harder.

@leftyandsparky , sounds like you have a good plan going. My husband started vaping in December and he's pretty intermittent with it still, but any progress is good progress. I kind of have to like, suggest things like "increase nic" or "try this tank," when he's in more of a good place but it's been slow going, honestly.

But I figure any and all progress is progress, so good for you for starting. We all started somewhere, I just try to stay really patient and remember there was NO ONE who was going to make me quit or even ready until I was beaten into reasonableness.

Good luck, I hope it goes well, even if it goes in increments. If I had NEVER tried a vape, I would never have become a vaper.
