The people who really need the masks are health care workers caring for the infected. They are scrambling to get enough produced here to meet the demand, since they've been outsourced to China for many years. That's the problem that is exacerbating this whole crisis - too much medical outsourcing to China by the "free" trade globalists for too many years. And now it is biting us big time.
There are plenty of masks stockpiled somewhere for medical personnel as part of national disaster preparations. Now that a national emergency has been declared its easier to get them released.

Looking at the brown bottles in the pantry today I realized they were hydrogen peroxide, not rubbing alcohol. Although the peroxide will kill viruses, it takes a few minutes. Damn. We do have plenty of soap though!
The rest of the story...

I got lucky tonight, my wife wasn't involved and she'll congratulate me in the morning.

Just before midnight I decided to look online at a local chain, Meijers, for Everclear as an alternative to sanitize just in case. One store showed it in stock, about 15 miles away. Liquor sales stop at 2am and there was no way I was diving into the shopping insanity tomorrow. North on I-75 I rolled only to find out the stock level was wrong, no Everclear. I couldn't be hard on the manager as she looked like she'd just finished a marathon.

The store was mellow and some restocking had been done, so I picked up some odds and ends and surprisingly corned beef on sale. All other meat and bread was wiped out, as was anything containing isopropyl alcohol. As I worked through the self checkout line the attendant had to put her pin code in for my beer purchase and we joked about carding me and how entire areas were emptied. She was hoping some bread would come in and was thankful her shift would end before the onslaught in the morning.

Walking out after loading up the cart I said goodnight to her as she was sorting out returns. I glanced at the cart she was emptying and saw a bottle that looked familiar. 70% rubbing alcohol! And another! She smiled, dug them out of the cart and said "We have a special right now, a dollar off if you buy two." The last two 32oz bottles, a total of $4.79. Likely the last ones within 50 miles. On Amazon, price gouging has made the same pair of bottles nearly $40.

Life is good.

A properly worn mask does help you from catching the virus. It's simply a bit of a hassle to wear long term, to make sure it has a full seal, and needs to be disposed of after use. It's a different use case from my typical scenario, takes user care to be effective but certainly does work.

I use them when cutting pressure treated wood, outdoor chores when the pollen count is really high, and garbage tasks like attic cleaning. The vented ones are great when you have to wear safety glasses, much less trouble with lens fog.

If a person is sick, wearing the non-vented kind keeps them from spreading the virus when they sneeze or cough.
Agree. This is WHY medical professionals wear masks while treating covid virus. Here is an interesting article that pretty much says masks help. Common sense tells you that a barrier between two of your holes in your head provides a barrier to the droplets of sick people.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/heal...loosen-coronavirus-guidance/#comments-wrapper

Other countries expect you to wear a mask. You could be an asymptomatic carrier and not even know you have the virus. Masks help to contain the virus.

Why Face Masks Are Encouraged in Asia, but Shunned in the U.S.

South Korea has an effective method of battling this virus. Interesting reads available. Here’s one:

Is S Korea's rapid testing the key to coronavirus?

And I’m not sure I believe anything these people say in the USA...CDC included. They seem kinda loosey goosey about their facts and recommendations, during an election to boot.

I am giving my parents most of the masks I bought and I will be wearing my masks when I go to check on them as they are in the high risk group of people over 80. I’m glad I have them.

I have made sure we are ready. I have stocked for us and my parents and will continue to stock as long as my Mom keeps giving me a list.

If anyone is having trouble finding masks and is able to sew there are instructions for making basic barrier type masks on youtube. I doubt they will do much more than prevent very minor contact with someone with the virus but it is better than nothing I suppose. I am just at the not worrying about it point.

In other news the 21700 batteries I ordered came in as well as another recurve squonk atty and the Recurve squonk Mod I picked up on a lark. I like how this thing feels in the hand though it is large and heavy. The shaping will make it hard to drop.

All the virus experts disagree with you. They have been saying on the news that your first statement is false. The experts are the ones that are saying a mask only stops the infected from spreading the virus. A mask doesn't stop the healthy from getting the virus.
Don, they do help prevent someone from getting covids-19, are specifically recommended for healthcare providers working with people who have, or may have, it.

The thing is you have to know how to use them, proper fit, proper removal technique, and ideally toss them out after use.

Social distancing, hand washing, not touching the face, are overall recommended, but if there is likelihood of coming in close contact with someone who may have it (for instance, if you may have to care for someone who has it), use of n95 masks kicks in.

The trusted source in their use, CDC:
Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). (search on "Respirators", which appears after the sections on gowns and gloves)

Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) (this is about how to minimize how many n95 masks are used, to stretch their availability for use when having to deal with people who do or may have the disease)

zar, i've seen the stats.
for reasons no one understands, children under 12
either don't get the virus or get such a mild case no one notices.
the next age group is about the same.
your son is probably safe.

the older you are, the worse it is.
He is just a bit older than 12, but since his chemo wipes out his blood cells, he has no immune system for about a week after each monthly visit. That is why he is on the danger list even though he is still young. Even a simple cold could be lethal.

It’s a shame that America doesn’t have enough necessities for medical staff. Not enough isolation rooms or ventilators.
No place in the world has enough of these things for this kind of event.

That is why the slowing the virus down tactic is so important. Try to keep the numbers sick all at once to a manageable level for the services available.

Thank you! I'm probably going to turn my nic river vg into soap or something! I have to clean my windows every other day since it sticks to the window. Never had this problem until this past year. I'm tired of cleaning windows. I only vape 50% VG as well.
I have never had a problem with windows in the past 12 years... crystal clear windows and that is with 2 people vaping in the car... but we vape unflavored.... I think it's the flavoring that is the problem, not the VG.

I remember smoking and how bad the windows would get, but I have not had anything remotely close to that since switching to vaping.

Actually, I have read from multiple sources that it is also beneficial to wear one if someone in the home is sick and is unable to wear theirs (due to things like breathing issues). In other words, just like healthcare workers there is a benefit when you are in constant contact with someone who is sick... But for the average Joe just filling his tank at the gas station, wearing one is pretty much a waste of a mask.

Somewhere in the garage I have a stack of N95 masks leftover from when we did blown in insulation in the attic several years ago... I plan on using those if one of us gets sick.

The thing that troubles me is I cannot fully believe anything that the CDC or the media says anymore after the e-cigarette fiasco, even though there were zero cases of lung illnesses or deaths from e-cigarettes they continued to blame e-cigarettes for months instead of actually warning people that they were dying from trying to get high using tainted blackmarket THC cartridges..

One worst cast scenario the CDC had a model for put infections in the US from between 160 million and 215 million with a death count of about 1.7 million.... And they say there are only 925k hospital beds in the US, but something like 21 million+ may need hospitalization over the next year. Of those beds only 100k are ICU and those are already near capacity.

But are they exaggerating? or are they minimizing?? because based on the e-cigarette lies, I doubt they are being honest.

EDIT: and the scary thing is that if you look at the graph on this page, we are on the same track as Italy: How the US stacks up to other countries in confirmed coronavirus cases

I agree no country can be 100% ready for the unknowns. But it seems America’s stockpiled reserves are severely lacking. From what I’m reading the reserves were never replenished from the H1N1 epidemic.

Medical providers, fearing equipment shortages, tap into secret national supply network

I don't remember doing much of anything during the swine flu outbreak, just keeping my hands clean as I normally do. Our city stored a bunch of sanitizer, masks, gloves and such at our plant and never used them. I read 18,000 died in the U.S. from it and it took 6 months for the administration to declare an emergency. Seems like a mass hysteria now. Reminds me of the twilight zone where the townspeople start turning on each other when the lights go out. TDS on steroids I suspect. The bottled water thing makes no sense at all to me.o_O

I guess I lucked out. I got a 4 pack of 32 oz bottles of hand sanitizer from Amazon Thursday for $12. My daughter was looking for some for her classroom (won’t need it now as school is out till mid April). I’ll probably keep one here for himself to decontaminate with when he gets home from work, and send the rest to my mom (she’s 85 and needs it far worse than I).
If anyone is looking for a dotaio, vapor range has them for $79.99. BYEBYESUN takes off 15%. I also had $6 in points, so with free shipping to boot, grabbed one for just under $62! The Ohmvape aio tanks do fit it. 3FVAPE has them for $2.

My son and I both got the swine flu with no complications. My coworker’s husband on the other hand got the swine flu that turned into pneumonia and he spent 4 weeks in ICU barely making it. They gave him 50/50 chance. He did survive though.

My son’s college extended spring break with online classes after that. I’m so glad. Lessens his exposure.
