For increased safety during transport, cells ship at a pretty low state-of-charge these days, typically 3.4x volts. Suggestion: If you have a charger that has a setting for LiFePO4 cells, use that to bring your new batteries up to 3.6V before putting them in storage. Based on the testing I've been doing since I got back to FL (where my test equipment is), I'm confident 3.6V is a good compromise level for storage, where you can leave them alone for several years.
Thanks for the tips @Rossum. The two I put on the charger both read 3.5V so I’ll bump them up to 3.6V.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Just about ever new 18x50, 26650 and 2x700 battery I have ever bought comes with a 3.5v charge. A few were 3.6v. Would be interesting to see if there is any difference between 3.5v and 3.6v in terms of storage.

EDIT: I have a charger that will charge any bay to 3.6v if I need to, I just don't want to have to do that with every new battery I get for storage if I don't have to. My theory is that suppliers and even high volume end users (power pack manufacturers) don't want to have unhealthy stock as this translates to lost $$$ in the long run so reputable manufacturers will send out with the proper storage charge. So 3.5 must be a good storage voltage, but I could be wrong in my assumption.

I'm more concerned about a predicted battery shortage due to the push for EVs.
I wish we could stock up on years worth of batteries.
Factbox: World faces shortage of lithium for electric vehicle batteries
EV 'Freak-Out Moment' Looms Over Lithium, Rare Earths

When will we run out of lithium?
But here’s where things start to get dicey: The approximate amount of lithium on earth is between 30 and 90 million tons. That means we’ll will run out eventually, but we’re not sure when. PV Magazine states it could be as soon as 2040, assuming electric cars demand 20 million tons of lithium by then.
As Electric Cars Are Built, Will Lithium Run Out?

But what if vaping actually turns out to extend one's lifespan?

Anecdotal, but back when I was smoking my doctor sent me for a routine X-ray as part of my physical. After the X-ray was developed I saw the image. There was a haze on one part of the X-ray. I asked the tech what caused it and she asked me if I smoked. She told me that was the reason for the haze and commented that If I quit smoking it would probably go away (and it did).

A couple of years later, I had another routine X-ray and it was clear and clean. I had stopped smoking and switched to vaping a year before. Since then, my lungs have been clear and X-rays are clear.

When I was Young, I did that at 27. I told people I was 27 well into my 30's. But of course, you can only do that for so long.

Now, when someone asks, I Don't Lie to make myself Younger. I Lie to make myself Older.

So someone will Ask and I'll say that I'm 75. Then they will usually say "Holy Snit! You look Great for 75. What's your Secret?".

LOL

I'm 71 and still do several 30 minute stationary bike rides a week at a resistance level 8 of 10. I don't get winded and I feel fine for my age. I still would like to roll back to 30 and stay there, of course. :)

I have a good number of lithium cells (about 20 or so) that I rotate. I generally charge them to full charge and use them in rotation. I've only had a couple over the years that lost capacity to the point where I wrapped them and trashed them. Those were older cells that had been in use for a long time. The key is rotation. That way each cell gets to cycle and recharge evenly and they don't sit idle for that long.

3.5v is a good (and recommended) storage charge level. 3.5v is the usual charge level when you buy a new cell from a vendor. If your charger has an internal resistance feature, use that to compare and determine when a cell needs to be replaced. Of course, vape time is the best indicator.

Most of my early purchases (2014) came at 3.6-3.7V. More recent ones have been in the 3.4-3.5V range. I believe this is due to IATA and FAA shipping regulations that require them to be at or below 30% state-of-charge, not because it's optimal for storage.

I like 3.6V because it's easy to get there using the LFP setting on many chargers, and it's closer to 50% than to 30%. This provides more headroom against self-discharge, but admittedly, self discharge is quite low under reasonable storage conditions (voltage below 3.8 and comfortable room temperature or below). Battery University recommends 3.7V, and there are other sites that recommend 3.8V, which is why I refer to 3.6V as a compromise.
