A lot of people are scared of handling nicotine. I was going to start doing DIY a year ago and told my husband I was planning on it to save money.

To that he put his foot down (and yes he actually said,I'm putting my foot down, absolutely no you are not doing that..) because he is afraid of me handling nicotine. I shared with him articles about it being more safe in concentrations less than 100mg/ml, and my ability to be safe and use safely precautions, but it really terrified him that something could happen to me. He would rather buy juice any day of the week than to have me take a risk.

I think most people have that fear.. I daresay while there is a large diy community here, that attitude is not the prevailing one among vapors in general, for one reason or another.

The only reason he is letting me do it now is because he has the same worries I do about the future of vaping, and wants me to be able to continue to vape no matter what happens so long as I want or need to.
Buying it in the strength you vape at would be no more dangerous than it is to refill a tank. Storage space in the freezer for that much diluted nic could be an issue though.

I think that one of the issues is that people mistake 100mg as 100 PERCENT (whereas it's actually only about 10%). I buy at 60mg (6%) strength, then cut down to everywhere between 4mg and 15mg (depending on which family member is vaping). I've never had any issues at all, and have had it on my skin, etc.

Now I wouldn't recommend anyone go for a swim in it, but as long as you're using basic common sense (keep it out of reach of children & pets, etc.), it shouldn't be a major issue. One can wear gloves & glasses if they choose, which is NEVER a bad idea (with anything, for that matter).

And for Pete's sake, don't take a swig. :toast:

I have been searching everywhere for some of the tin box mods from yesteryear. Alas, they don't seem to exist anymore.
As I remember, Smart Vapes had the Altoids box. Unfortunately, they disappeared off their website before I could snatch one.
LOL...I'm cracking myself up..I started to type, "I have a big one."
then realized how that would come across.
I have a large Altoid box and several small ones. You want one?
You do realize I mean empty unmodded Altoid boxes, right? :)
If I had an Altoid mod I'd put it up on a shelf as a memento.
You had me going there.
My Altoids box still works to this day :) I don't use it regularly, but every once in a while I will load it up and enjoy an evening vaping on it, with an IGO-L dripper built to about 1.6Ω with and 18500 battery on board. It does a soul good to return to the starting point from time to time.
I love to use the old stuff. RoughStack, little black plastic AA battery box mod, Blue Lightning mod, 510 w/cartos, . . . . I don't save the stuff because I'm a hoarder. I save it because I still like it.
I used to have a wall full of old computer motherboards ranging from
8088 to Pentium. They were all screwed to the wall and out of the way
..beats me why she made me get rid of them
Very cool!
I always wanted to know how things work !
Me too. Unfortunately I didn't have anyone to teach me. I'm not mechanically inclined either. But, I love learning about it.
Those were so cool. I wanted, I wanted!
I've been going through the same debate myself. I should have enough, but what if something unforeseen happens? An accident perhaps... I'm thinking a liter or two more than I think I need might be the way to go, just for insurance purposes. My problem is storage space! I'm not buying a freezer just to store
I kept feeling that way too. So, I'ld buy a little more. I figured that even if I didn't really need it, buying more would calm my nerves. Still a benefit. Then I decided to take advantage of the extra by spreading it out in two different location. In case of fire or other disaster. So, the extra is still a benefit.

See how I rationalized that? Pretty good, huh?

I have liters of 100mg. and also buy premade liters at 6mg. I mix using the drop method with flavorings and just pour out how much I need of the 6mg. and add my flavors. I know I lose a bit of nic. doing that, but I'm ok with that.

Nope. But I did/do have both sizes of Roughstack. I remember seeing the Maxi RoughStack going up on MadVapes in the middle of the night and jumping on it.

2roughstacks.jpg

The Roughstack was my very first mod :) I don't have two full mods but I do have the extension so I can do either. I still have it and it still work  I had to replace the switch once but I still have another spare switch should I ever need to replace it. :)

The one thing I do is break out 100 mg nic into little 15 ml glass bottles (4 or 5 of them) that go in my mix set. That way, whenever it's time to make some juice, there's never more than 15 ml I can spill and splash around. And as I usually only make 30 ml of a juice at a time (still figuring out what I do and do not like, which is a bit harder than with premixed given all the tweaks you can make), that lasts me a while. Common sense care is all you really need. And if you do get a little splash on you it's not necessary to emergently run to a sink to rinse. You could trip in your haste and hurt yourself more than the little splash will.

Gloves and eye cover are always a good idea, but I worry more about keeping it out of the hands of kids and paws of pets than I do about working with it myself.

Agreed.

I break one liter down into eight 125ml bottles, pulling one out of the freezer at a time. I then break that one 60mg down into all kinds of smaller options, depending what I need at the time. I ALWAYS keep a 125 of 15mg on hand, since that's my main-use strength.

Everyone can/will find what works for them. Just be safe, and smart.

If we play our cards right, we'll outlast the legislators (until common sense returns to We The People).

Gloves aren't too much of an issue, but eye protection is a VERY good idea. That stuff stings like crazy if you get it in your eyes.

Lol.. yeah. I tried telling him that many times.. we went around and around on the topic for a good while before I got the "I'm putting my foot down" speech.

But I'm not worried, he is letting me do it now out of concern for the future.. so I'm good. I've done enough reading on the topic I'm comfortable with buying the 100mg/ml nicotine. I'll be using all the safety precautions advices, so his mind will be at ease.

His argument was always that nicotine is used to kill rats and small pests, so he figured anything that could kill something small like that could hurt me, and he never wants to let me take chances.

Let's face it, we are talking about the man who won't let me walk in the woods behind the house because he's worried a bear might hurt me..

He just gets overly paranoid that I'm going to get hurt or die someday. He thinks it's his job to make sure I'm adequately safe. We let him.. it's cute. I usually do the dangerous stuff when he is at work so he doesn't worry. :)

It will also be readily absorbed, unlike intact skin. And I can certainly see a drop of that stinging real bad. I'm big on eye protection in general, whether mixing juice, painting a room (latex paint stings like hell dripping off the ceiling), to chopping or even drilling wood. Particles fly around and they can be hard to get out once embedded.

You pretty much said it. It's those outside of the vaping community with the most fear regarding every aspect of vaping. After 3 yrs my family still thinks vaping is smoking & wasn't too thrilled when I said I have nic in the freezer.

I so agree  Everyone should have a healthy respect for working with 100 mg nic, but there is no need for fear if one is careful.

I had concerns when I purchased my first nic for DIY so at the time I bought 36 mg. People were vaping 36mg so I felt comfortable working with that strength. After working with that I realized it wasn't difficult or scary so after that I was ready to purchase 100mg. Up until my last liter, I always mixed it down from 100mg to 50mg before putting it in the freezer. I find it very easy to work with the 50mg when doing my DIY. Space concerns and knowing it will be a long time before I need to use the last liter meant that I've left that one at 100mg with VERY well marked containers should anyone else ever touch those bottles.

You have bears in your woods? I'd probably feel the same, never mind not going back there myself. Bad enough facing down an angry raccoon, no way this city raised kid is dealing with a bear.

Lol.. we have bears here naturally.. can't put out our trash the night before trash day or the bears will have your trash everywhere the next morning, we also have mountain lions, and they have recently reintroduced wolves in this area to help control the elk population. They decided rather than allowing hunting, they would reintroduce predators to kill off the sick or weak in the elk population in order for the elk herds to grow very strong.

So yeah.. And for fun we have snakes too.. he doesn't like me going off the beaten path at all without him so he can protect me.

As for me, I'm less afraid of the wildlife than I am of city people.. give me a bear to face down any day of the week than a man whose a nut job robber or .......

And that's exactly how I bought mine- in the strength I vape at. I dont consider it stupid cautious but stupid convenient. ;)
Currently my time is very limited & will be for the foreseeable future but I do plan to get some 100mg strength for later down the line.

As it becomes a norm people will adjust - did you ever think that you would pay $50 for a carton of smokes???:(
$50 a carton? They were $12.50 A PACK when I quit last year!

But you are right, I was buying them. ;)

Time is something I have tons of. :) space in the freezer is always another story.
