Lobbying could be significant for our cause. We've had people lobbying on behalf of vaping, but this appears to be happening on a more serious level, with money and professional lobbyists. Not much of that has happened before.
There has been big money and professional lobbyists for both Big Tobacco and Big Pharma from the very beginning of the Deeming process. To the best of my knowledge, all the vaping community had was CASAA, a non-profit advocacy group for nicotine harm reduction to go against the big boys. To become a member was and is free (
see the link in my sig), and members have always been encouraged to donate money for their lobbying efforts.
So at this point, hard as it is to say, I think I would Rather have BT in our corner. Verses No One at all.
I know that (to Many) it is kinda like having Stalin as a Ally. But there are still a Few issues still to be Ironed Out. Like Flavors, Net Sales, and Federal Taxes. On those Issues, BT and BV are aligned with what we Want.
So I'm Not sure just how much Worse it is going to be to have JUUL/BT throwing a bunch of Cash Around?
I have to say I kind of agree that BT/Vaping's interests are somewhat in alignment. They WERE competing but I think they have both become so scared of EACH being removed, they sort of banded together into this unholy alliance.
Big Tobacco's interests has been split between
two groups for quite some time. One group looked into the future and saw the fall in numbers of cigarette sales over the last several years and began to sell their versions of e-cigarettes (Blu, Vuse, etc). If you can't beat them, join them.
The other group considered
all e-cigs to be the enemy, so their lobbyists pushed for tighter restrictions on e-cigs such as banning open systems and banning flavors other than tobacco and nicotine. This group doesn't have a fear of being removed by the government. The government depends too much on tobacco sin taxes, and what lawmaker is willing to ban the tobacco industry and put hundreds of thousands of farmers and businesses out of business?
Lawmakers finally figured out how much money they can add to the economy with government taxes by decriminalizing/legalizing hemp products which had been banned for what, 50 years?
