Now don't go crazy here. Everything is made in China anyways. So if you got it from China, you're simply cutting out the middle man with high markup. ;)

That's what I thought when I bought it...anyway, I'm chalking it up to I plugged the thing into the wall instead of using an external charger, and the battery I bought, I got it from an actual battery store, that supposedly specializes in only batteries and light bulbs, and yet this is never a store I would've bought mod batteries from. This battery almost caused me some trouble...never had a problem with any of my mod batteries, lesson learned.

Cordless power tools with packs made up of three to five high-drain 18650s were already available at that point. I've had a Bosch "12V" drill that uses a pack composed of three such cells since at least 2011. So they did exist, but they may not have been readily available as bare cells.
Probably not readily available as bare cells at that time. I always bought my batteries from RTD Vapor from the very beginning thanks to ECF recommendations.

Some background information: I had a protected Trustfire ICR battery explode in one of my mech mods in 2012, which spurred me on to educate myself about batteries. Somewhere around that time in vaping history, AW began to offer their red unprotected battery that was touted as the first high drain battery for vapers and flashlight users. There was much confusion about protected VS unprotected batteries on the forums at that time, and the popular consensus at that time was never use an unprotected battery in a mod. These so-called experts apparently didn't understand about "safer chemistry" batteries and that they didn't need to be protected.

After I did my research, and reading the recommendations of our then ECF battery expert @rolygate, I began using the red AW high drain batteries exclusively. Rechargeable Batteries

Not long after, I wrote my blog Battery Basics for Mods: IMR or Protected ICR?, which evolved into my Battery Basics for Mods: The Definative Battery Guide for Vaping.

I like to believe that perhaps I had a little something to do with unprotected safer chemistry batteries becoming more acceptable and popular for vapers based on that blog. On my first day working at the vape shop in 2013, my store manager half-humorously introduced me as an "internet celebrity" to the rest of the employees. He said if you Google "vaping batteries" that my blog would be one of the first hits. That was my 15 minutes of fame moment. :D

One of my DeWalt 18v drill battery pack just died yesterday (bought 2012).
They use 14 strange paper wrapped batteries.
Short, about 1-1/4" long X 7/8" wide, no markings.
    Would not work for vaping.
Hope we never get to the point of having to cannibalize battery packs.

I don't have the dimensions of the sub-C battery handy, but that sounds about right to me. Probably NiMH chemistry.

None of the gear I use regularly is made in China; not one bit of it.

Altria announced today that it would pull its pod vapes MarkTen Elite and Apex from the market until the FDA approves them via a premarket tobacco application or decides that “the youth issue is otherwise addressed.” They will also pull all flavors of their cigalike products MarkTen and Green Smoke except tobacco, menthol, and mint.
What do you bet that stuff didn't sell well and wasn't profitable? I mean MarkTen was a distant second to Vuse even before Juul at both of their lunches. Has anyone considered the possibility that Altria is using the FDA's current tantrums as a convenient excuse to cut their losses on a product line that was never really successful for them to begin with?

What Altria has done kinda works on a Couple of Different Levels.

It puts Pressure on JUUL to take an "Action". It Also puts the FDA on a Fence when it comes to Congress and Funding.

It also can be that Altria feels the FDA is going to take a Similar Action anyway. So the PR Good Guy stuff isn't going to Dent the Bottom Line that much.

    FDA Activity
    • In September, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a number of additional steps to address underage use of e-vapor products. The FDA also asked several companies, including Altria, to provide plans to address underage use of e-vapor products. Altria welcomed FDA's action and recently met with FDA Commissioner Gottlieb to discuss actions that could be taken.
    • Today, Altria announces the following actions, which are included in Altria's response letter to the FDA posted at altria.com:
      • Nu Mark will remove from the market MarkTen Elite and Apex by MarkTen pod-based products until these products receive a market order from the FDA or the youth issue is otherwise addressed;
      • For our remaining MarkTen and Green Smoke cig-a-like products, Nu Mark will sell only tobacco, menthol and mint varieties. Nu Mark will discontinue the sale of all other flavor variants of our cig-a-like products until these products receive a market order from the FDA or the youth issue is otherwise addressed; and
      • Altria will support federal legislation to establish 21 as the minimum age to purchase any tobacco product.

    Innovation
    • Approximately 80% of Nu Mark's e-vapor volume in the third-quarter of 2018 will remain on the market after removing MarkTen Elite and Apex by MarkTen pod-based products and discontinuing the sale of flavor variants of Nu Mark's cig-a-like products, other than tobacco, menthol and mint varieties.
    • The FDA accepted and filed for substantive scientific review USSTC's modified risk tobacco product application for Copenhagen Snuff submitted by USSTC in the first quarter.
    • PM USA is ready to deploy its initial lead market plans for IQOS upon FDA authorization.

It will be interesting to see just how fast/slow the FDA response is. That will speak volumes.

We're in real trouble now. Wait until Gottlieb realizes that the bomber was vape-inspired:

My Tac flashlights take 18650’s, but not the kind that go in mods. Different beastie. I’m guessing the flashlight is a work around for customs?

My latest 8W Cree LED flashlights (two in box) came with one button top cell. The flashlight has the spring at the bottom of the LED housing where it touches the positive battery pole and the bottom cap is a standard tail cap (machined contact with no spring). If the spring should bend or shift with an 18650 in place and the shrink wrap is cracked there's a likelihood of catastrophic failure. The instructions tell you to put the positive against the spring under the LED cap. I tried reversing the cell, but it's reverse biased against the LED's diode and no light that way.

All three of my Tac flashlights work that way. Go figure. I'm using flat top cells in those lights for the wider positive contact. The button cell is a narrow target for the spring.

Luckily, all my my gear is straight from China.. :p:D

All the flashlights have the spring in the tailcap - as it should be.
It's also interesting to note that all the flashlights I got in ~2017 were far better quality than my crop of flashlights from circa 2008 or so. The old crop that I replaced were all hit or miss as far as working without some modification (or at all) - whereas my current crop has all worked perfectly fine right out of the gate. So China QC, at least for flashlights, seems to have improved dramatically.. Go figure!

Was the laundry detergent flavored? Ban them too.

And air fresheners are doomed as well! Can't have any flavor in food either, as that might lead kids to become obsese. And no more colors either, as the colorful food packaging might lead kids to become addicted to food.
