What's interesting in a number of these stories is how the issue of vaping is touched upon , and his dealing with opponents on one side, and conservative and libertarian pressure from the other to minimize regulation. The guy was trying to navigate guided by evidence based science to protect a new paradigm to manage tobacco addiction and its health consequences, but was being beaten up by extremists from both sides.

It's pretty much the pattern of all politics these days, with the vocal minorities on each end of the spectrum preventing considered and pragmatic solutions from being adopted. And not just vaping, but for most of the political policies that are undermined and the resultant problems never addressed. I truly dislike the inability to enact policies favored by the majority because of small groups of extremists on either side.

...and allowing facts to determine policy instead of ulterior motives.

I always thought, "Be careful what you wish for", when I saw people tearing into Gottlieb.
Agreed, and "better the devil you know..."

I'm hoping we at least hear statements (& see resulting action) similar to his (from him just yesterday) from his successor:

"While we believe that e-cigarettes offer a potentially safer alternative to combustible tobacco for currently addicted adult smokers who completely switch to these products,"
and
"I still believe that e-cigarettes present an important opportunity for currently addicted adult smokers to transition off combustible products and onto nicotine delivery products that may not have the same level of risks associated with them."

Unless I missed something (entirely possible), it seems most of his actions were fairly reasonably focused on youth accessibility. Hell, does anyone think he didn't know how many new products were introduced since 2016 without approval - yet he virtually ignored them until the shrill cries about Juul became too much. I know many were concerned about things he said about flavors...but we still have those. At the moment, anyway. I hope his replacement doesn't come in with ideas about massive action just to show how much more "effective" they are than Gottlieb was.

edit: after posting, I see @mikepetro beat me to that proverb while I was driving home!

Isn't it likely that Trump will appoint an antiregulation director, as he hoped Gottlieb would be? If he gets around to it, that is. It looks as though his plate is going to be pretty full soon, and not just of fast food and double scoops of ice cream.

From your mouth to God's ears... But I didn't think Gottlieb was for regulations. He was very vape-friendly, IMHO. I don't think we can do much better, but who knows.

I got the impression Trump wanted him to be more hands off than he turned out to be, more like other appointees whose main focus has been to eliminate regulations to help money makers make more money.

At 53 - 47, you just have to Hope that the Entire JUUL Hysteria doesn't sway Too Many members of the Senate.

Because if you walk into an Advise and Consent Vote and have said that things are going to be Business as Usual e-Cigarette-wise, I'm Not Sure you would be Confirmed?

Just when I thought it was time to slow down on hardware and DIY supply accumulation!

The pressure has to be on cigarette companies. They weathered the smoke products legislation scare pretty well by expanding into the next new thing with Juul. Now, Congress wants to take away the thing that took away our cigarettes and made us non-smokers.

It's getting pretty crazy, guys! They'd be better off looking at ways to make the nation's infrastructure great again. There's potholes in federal highways that need fixing and bridges that are crumbling slowly.

Instead we're seeing "herb" legalization for recreational use (like underage won't have access to that) and alcohol containing ice cream okayed to be "competitive for dairy farmers (seriously, that's the excuse to help the dairy industry in NY State, and no kid would pick that up out of the freezer, right?).

I had sticker shock and left the pharmacy without filling the inhaler script.
I might add:

The price was insanely high. Now that I DIY and have bought bulk nicotine, I have a relatively good idea of the profit they are getting, after the costs of production, packaging and shipping. There is a hefty margin there even in the generic store brands.
