Perhaps you're an exception or even in the minority. Alcoholics I've known were interested in the buzz more than they were the method. Some mixed drinks in a glass and drank methodically. Some drank it straight. Some guzzled beer out of cans or bottles. Some never took the bottle out of the bag. Etc.. But I am guessing almost every cigarette smoker was addicted to the motions as much as any other facet of smoking. And when we smoke 20 - 40 cigarettes a day vs how many drinks per day???
But I mean, let's be honest here. Alcoholism, drugs, and smoking are all in the same league as far as hard core addictions go. But I know far more alcoholics and drug addicts who gave up their addictions yet remained smokers than the other way around and they've told me cigarettes were harder to quit. Perhaps for some of the reasons Rossum points out but also, IMO, because they are such a prominent part of our lives that go beyond the nicotine. Probably explains why vaping is more viable as a cessation method than patches and gum. We can still go thru the motions.
