I hate to fool with them too much. I do blow them out regularly and tried cleaning one in Crest Mouthwash. When I do a dry burn I get a nasty smell coming off the wick. I just don't know how long I should do a dry burn before it damages the atty....It happens after vaping for a long period and it's just gross! When I change to a new atty it doesn't do it but my mouth is still ruined for the day. ....Unless I can find a solution I'm concerned that this will keep me from vaping long term.

Yo dog. I think Kristens right and you may be running your attys dry or too hot. Also, some juices just seem have a lot of sugar or gummy/oily substances in them and I think they cake the filliment up no matter how you use or clean them.

I stopped dry burning to clean after I fried an atty trying to get some juice residue off. It just never seems to burn completely clean and I think it cakes the residue on. In my experience, about 11-12 seconds of heat is aproaching the danger zone and I just stopped going there.

I started cleaning with the following method and havn't lost an atty durring cleaning since. I also clean new atty's this was to get the factory gunk off before using the first time:
1.) Blow out any residue with canned or compressed air. (I have used an air compressor at 35psi and had no problems but users risk, ya know.)
2.) Wash out atty by runing hot tap or boiling water into both ends of the atty.
3.)Blow out atty again and let dry 24 hours. As an alternative you can put them in the oven on low at about 140° for 15-30 minutes if you NEED one now.

When I started vaping, I was running my attys hot and would burn my throat and pretty much make it a negative experience for the rest of the day. You might also try setting up 2 sticks and alternating between them when they get hot. This will allow the atty too cool and also alow more juice to wick up into the atty so it's ready to go next time you hit it.

Don't give up!

I got my first kit at Healthcabin and it works great, though I stopped using it for a while and just got back into it. I ordered another kit from Cignot but got auto batteries and charger, and my previous one was manual. I left the charger for my dad as we split the new kit and tried to use my manual's charger to charge the auto one and it didn't work.
Does that usually happen?

The dry burn has brought a lot of my atties "back from the dead", but the key for me has been to rinse them in warm water.. mouth-blow them dry... dry-burn in cycles until I get the red glow... then re-rinse them again in hot/warm running water (to get rid of the burned taste and ash) and then re-dry them. Then I prime them and I'm good to go.

We are seeing a lot of reports about burnt tasting atomizers coming into me. And when I say a lot, I mean a lot. Even though I no longer use the 510, I ordered from 5 different Suppliers to see if this burnt taste is a global "hit or miss" problem or is a larger issue.

I will advise.

Sun

I am so happy I found this comment in this thread. I've been driving myself crazy for 2 weeks over this!! I kept chalking it up to "new user error".

I comb the boards for information. I read anything and everything hoping to figure out what the heck I may be doing wrong...

I've tried almost every cart mod, I've tried direct dripping, I check to see if my filler material is stuck to the atty constantly. I've done the hot water rinse, went out and got Crest pro Health and soaked as directed, got them drunk in a shot glass full of vodka, sobered them up with more hot water... I change e-juice flavors, I've accidentally flooded my atties trying to not run them dry... then I hear the gurgle of flood-dom... I blow it out... lather, rinse, repeat :(

I can get maybe... maybe 2 to 4 decent draws - then blech - the taste and smell is horrid. I haven't really done the dry-burn, so I don't know if I have any "lingering" burnt smell hanging around... but I have taken the cart off and literally smoked from the open end of the atty hoping to clear whatever bad burned horrors may be in there. I've even tried to ignore it by telling myself I'm insane.

I had 1 out of 4 that didn't taste this way, and now? All 4 to some degree. It seems the more I use one, the worse it gets, so I swap it out. Now 2 weeks later, I don't even know which one was "my favorite".

I was going to just suck it up and buy another starter kit on payday.

Now I think I'll wait a few days and keep my eye on this thread before I decide to buy more.

Thanks!!

Oh Remie, you explained it so well! I thought I was losing it, too. We started at the same time and pretty much bought our 510s together from the same place. I'm sorry to hear you're having the same trouble. I almost PMed you earlier to see if it was just me.

We did! We started the same day - and we both quit smoking the same day!

Wow, maybe we're not just froot-loops? It's frustrating, but now I'm laughing because I know I'm not "imagining it" - or "going bonky"

"I can get maybe... maybe 2 to 4 decent draws - then blech - the taste and smell is horrid."

This is basically what I am getting... since this is my first time trying to vap, I don't know what decent is... but after an alcohol in cartridge soak, or DD that is about all I get before I get that headache inducing bad taste/smell.

Ryum, I'm pretty new as well and I honestly thought it was me.
I thought that I had to be doing something wrong. I'd researched for two months before I placed my order. Despite everything I learned in that time, despite feeling completely comfortable, confident and knowledgeable from the day I received my 510 - I still believed I was either doing something wrong, or going bonky.

I'm 3 weeks in now and it's only getting worse. I think the most frustrating part of it is that I'm also experiencing really, really hard draw as I vape on them. I don't vape thick or sweet smoke-juice, I build good carts... nothing seems to make logical sense as to what the problem could be. I even get the "hard draw" with direct dripping, no gurgling, it's not flooded...

I decided to keep track today. This morning I put on a fresh, virtually unused atty. I stuck with one e-liquid which is clean, colorless and not thick.

The draw was pretty easy, everything seemed fine. It was probably the best "morning coffee vape" I've had in a while.

I'd consider myself a "heavy vaper" (I was a heavy-smoker) - but I know that there are many here who use a 510 and report they vape heavily, so I'm not going to factor that in as a possible cause.

Everything was going fine. I DD sometimes (because I realize I'm getting a little frustrated and I tend to soothe any cravings quicker that way for whatever reason). I stuck with ONE cart (fluval with straw-mod) all day and topped it off as needed.

By 5:00pm - I was once again ready to tear my hair out. The harsh burned smell and disgusting burned taste returned with a vengeance. I'd experienced it a few times as the afternoon wore on, and it just got worse and worse.

Keep in mind - over the past two weeks I've learned to overlook and ignore what I explained in the statement I made in the post you quoted above.

As the day went on the draw got harder and harder. When I experience the hard draw, I reflexively think I may have a flooded atty so I remove it and gently blow it out. I tail-pipe it to clear it so I did this a few times... and then it hit me.

I started vaping at about noon (yeah, late night, slept in :p ) and as the day went on, the entire problem escalated until I realized I was once again doing my "crazy-chick" ritual of DD, tail-piping, blowing it out, checking the cartridge, staring down into the atty as if it was going to magically speak to me and explain itself... :( I was frustrated again, as usual.

I realized that during the day, the problem was escalating, and once it got bad enough, I fell right into the routine I've trained myself to do as described above.

I swapped the atty out and the one I put on to replace it is one I've obviously experienced the problem with before because right away it was just "off". Hard draw and after a few pulls, the disgusting burned taste.

I emailed the supplier about this on 1/11/10 - and being so new at that point I really did chalk it up to "new user error". I soaked the 2 atties I was using at that time as per the suggestion I received in the supplier's reply and just waited for my second order to arrive hoping the new atties would be better.

They are all performing exactly the same.

Since I have nothing to lose at this point I am going to use my hand-held steamer on one of my atties tonight. If I kill it - oh well... at least right now I have back-ups. They're not dead - they're just not right :(

Don't give up! You're not alone. I am sure someone will figure out why this is happening to so many of us right now.

Where are you guys buying your 510's?

I get mine from nhaler and mypvshop and I am a serious chain vaper - I kill passthrough batteries DEAD all of the time, but I have yet to kill one of their attys.

I don't think it matters as long as they are original Joye attys, right? The supplier buys them directly from Joye.

I believe that there are "counterfeits" floating around. I say this because I get my atty's and batteries from Totally Wicked and so far have seen several designs for the batteries. I haven't noticed differences in the atty's since I haven't cut one up for about 4 months. I also notice TW is now selling "Mega" atty's and carts. Does anyone know if Joy has different design runs or if these are indeed knock offs. Don't get me wrong, TW's hardware has performed well but someone else may be farming out production to someone else besides Joy.

I would sure like to know if the 510 mega attys from TW and Janty are better and worth the extra cost. Will they work on a 510 or just the eGo/Tornado, anyone know?

I will be VERY interested in hearing how Sun comes out on this.

I also thought I was going crazy with the burnt taste etc. GoodDog and Reime are describing it perfectly.

ALL of the attys that I have purchased have been from TW. Didn't have this problem until I started in on the new ones (bought 2 of the 5 packs to stock up). Unfortunately I can't go back to the old ones that I have since the 2 I was using finally gave out.

I'm finding that the new attys are actually melting my carts. I've noticed it on 3 in the past 2 days, using 3 of the new attys to make sure it wasn't just 1 bad one. I'm not getting them hot, 2 to 3 sec drag total. I'm vaping a LOT less because I feel like / probably am burning my throat. Alignment is not an issue, been reading on that most of the day.

I hope Sun comes up with something, or I'm going to have to give up the 510 totally.

This sucks!

Thanks GoodDog. I have trimmed the carts and it has helped with the melting, but not the burnt problems.
The thing that I can't understand though is why was this not a problem with my other attys?
I talked to TW a few minutes ago, and they haven't heard anything about this. Because the attys are from 5 packs there is no warranty. They did say to try all 10 atties that I have if if they ALL have this problem to let them know.

I read threads that go back to August about the burnt taste of some 510 attys! It's beginning to upset me that these vendors say they have never heard of this before!!! That seems to be the standard answer and it's not true as many have complained. Do a search on ECF and see how many have told vendors about this problem and are told the same thing as you!

I've spent so much on this piece of crap that I can't use for more than a couple of hits at a time! It leaves my mouth with a nasty taste and if the problem is not fixed it could be the downfall for many vapers trying to quit analogs!
