I am Canadian (just like the beer commercial) but as an ECF member I have a comment.

This thread seems to be leaning to the "they are grouping us with tobacco, and they are against tobacco" direction. None of these proposals (my country is the same, except they have already outlawed (or at least prevented the advertising or sale of) e-cigs with nicotine) threatens to stop the sale of tobacco. That is the whole point, tobacco sales are a cash cow for governments. E-cigs threaten that. They are not against smoking, they are against quitting smoking unless it leads to an equally profitable (and ineffective - so it therefore does not interfere with the long term cash flow to them from tobacco) alternatives.
And, you know what, Canadians are vaping along just fine in spite of the restrictions. When I heard that importing nicotine to Canada would be treated as importing narcotics, my first thought was, "What, now there are no narcotics crossing the border".
This is the new "Prohibition", except this time the countries are reversed!

I don't know how much of this is legitimate and how much is the same kind of scare tactics that have been going on since Obama's inauguration when everyone was going to have their guns confiscated and ammo was going to be outlawed. Some politicians mused, some regulators mumbled, the NRA and websites reacted, viral e-mails went out and it caused a big run on guns and ammo. The gun dealers & mfgs., made out like bandits, which was the intention, but the only ammo shortages I've seen were caused by the panic buying these stories caused. I'm starting to detect the same dynamics in the e-cig issue.

I still have my guns and plenty of ammo. I'm still waiting for Obama to come take them away from me.

Bill, I appreciate all the work you do on behalf of the vaping community, but this is serious enough to restrict accounts to credible news sources. State initiatives can be verified easily enough, but I can't get too awfully worked up by some blog reporting that some anonymous FDA spokesman said this or that, or that some ambitious Senator or Congressman said this or that. Politicians say stuff all the time. Bills and regulations are proposed, sponsored and die from lack of interest every single day.

I also find it curious that, in the majority of these stories you reference, all the blame is cast at the feet of Democrats, despite the fact that Republicans, BT and PHARMA have been in bed together since forever. Frankly, I'm getting de-sensitized to all this alarmism and tired of the partisanship displayed by vapers in general. This is not, nor should it be, a partisan issue. How about some credible, non partisan and even-handed sources of information on pending federal regulation and legislation, not a partisan account of the musings of this or that bureaucrat or rambling politician. The tone that this whole issue has taken is making me want to just say to hell with the whole thing and give up. I've smuggled before and I can do it again. I don't think that's what you want and polarization can't be good for the vaping community in general.

Bill is giving both firsthand accounts and a knowledgeable assessment of the laws and the FDA's actions. We know for a fact what is going on at TPSAC and what their intent is for other smoke-less alternatives. We can only hope our testimonies made some impact.

The media is the last place to get any information - they are clueless fools for the most part. We've been trying to educate them. Anyone who has been fighting e-cigarette bans for the past 3 years knows that all but maybe one has been introduced by Democrats and legislation is being introduced all over the place. We have a dialog and that's what we must have to be presently self supporting of our own vaping and that of loved ones, new friends and everyone of the 10,000,000 vapers and growing (inflated possibly but viable until the laws make it impossible to affordably obtain nic, etc.) of the still 450,000,000 smokers out there who potentially will destroy stock market investments in the demise of the largest aging population ever to live on planet earth all at once. To even think of ways to make our side of the story convincing, and worthy of the American Public's support, advocacy and voice is what CASAA and Tobacco Harm Reduction and so many many great business and social organizations have taken up with our right vape and use nicotine how we would like to..... ah, cause, it is a worthy cause as we already are aware here in this thread and on this forum. I am embarrassed, I have been attempting to construct a letter that I hope that a very liberal wing of left-wing political cohesion and endless petitions to solve many social, economic and legal ills globally as well as mainland, I receive these emails regularly to my incredibly in-exhaustible gmail addy, they are known as Change.org I have all but thrown in the towel, and have the cynical feeling that most of the letters to Senators, and other legislatures is at best wishful thinking and probably futile BUT!!! I am starting to wonder if Change.org would ever take up an interest in standing up to BIG PHARMA and the ALA (American Lung Association) AHA (American Heart Association). There are 450,000,000 people in the United States smoking cigarettes, in spite of health, financial and social negatives. I have been term (vaping) using an electronic cigarette along with a growing American populous at latest count perhaps 10,000,000 Americans are enjoying having an affordable, healthier alternative to smoking and a recent Korean scientific study Vapor Test Results by Korea Electronic Cigarette Association, compares with a chart side by side, the ill health risks associated with smoking and the 40 known chemicals that e-cigarettes only contain three non cancer causing chemicals, basically, nicotine, which recent studies point to health benefits from in the treatment of Alheimer's and other conditions, real scientific conclusive results. .
Before I expound more, I am currently writing letters to Senators and State Representatives all over the United States, but we are no match, CASAA.ORG is for vaping the loudest and strongest defender, a hub for all interested vapers. A wealth of information and organizational vocality, it is what the vapers themselves and the businesses, mostly small are up against. Big business that would like to continue to not have the new designer drug, now known as Nicotine, be controlled, taxed and profited from. I may sound a bit cynical if not somewhat paranoid, but on our largest social communities with active forums and threads on every bit of info available currently about e-cigarettes and a man by the Name of Bill Godshall to mention the founder of Tobacco Harm Reduction with so many educated and dedicated individuals have been tirelessly campaigning and inspiring users of e-cigarettes and other smoking alternatives still legally available, but that is where the fighting is. The FDA has threatened to classify e-cigarettes and nicotine drug delivery system that 10,000,000 and counting are thankfully being able to choose and afford in order to satisfy the craving for the very addictive, yet in and of itself nicotine, does not cause cancer.
I am wondering how to reach the more educated liberal politicians, because unfortunately most of the anti and regulatory legislation seems to come from the Left to center Democratic wing. I just wonder how would you if you can and have time suggest that I network with Change.org to help educate other smoker's dying to have a better alternative they can afford and regulate their own use of. I see that you joined ECF in December 2010, but have only 51 posts (at the time of this writing). Perhaps you haven't come here on a regular basis.

There have been several petitions organized between 2009 and now. There are many currently active in other countries.

The first one in the US that I'm aware of was set up on the Petition Site in 2009. The goal was 10,000 signatures.

The most recent petition was submitted to the White House.

The required number of signatures was gathered and the White House responded not by telling the FDA what to do, but rather by punting the question to the FDA to answer. The response was the usual drivel about "If you want to quit, use the FDA approved medications".

These petitions were supported by and promoted in this forum and all gathered the target number of signatures. They had no measurable effect on the situation.

Where we have seen measurable effects when there is a specific law being proposed, a Call to Action is issued, and a large number of citizens contact the elected officials to urge them to oppose or amend the bill. There is strength in numbers, and when sufficient numbers contact the lawmakers, some of them listen.

When a restrictive law is proposed in some other city or state, everyone needs to jump on the bandwagon together. When a restrictive law gets passed in one locality, it becomes the "model" that other localities point to as justification for passing a similar law.

When a restrictive law is proposed in your own community, the most effective action you can take is to personally contact lawmakers and talk to them either in person or on the phone. Tell them your story about how a smoke-free alternative helped you escape from smoking. Ask them to keep the products available so that other smokers can escape, too. If you can't talk to the lawmakers, send them letters delivered by US mail or Fax.

If the law is being proposed in another jurisdiction, send an email.

The Consumer Advocates for Smoke-free Alternatives Association (CASAA) has a section of the web site dedicated to Calls to Action. Click "Call to Action" in the navigation bar at the top of the screen and a list drops down.

I have signed those petitions and sent the emails to many bills from many states, got to be honest, it's tiring at times, but I will send more, I see at least 5 more states are enacting bills that will hurt people's rights to vape. Alabama Smoke-free Air Amendment of 2012 - HB HB383.

I am in agreement that e-cigarettes as well as any nicotine products, such as e-cigarettes or real smoking cigarettes, should not be sold to minors. This letter is a request that you not ban e-cigarette use in public places along with smoking. Smokers and the diseases related to the burning of tobacco have proven negative risks to the health of smokers and non smokers alike.
E-cigarettes however have not been proven in any of the numerous studies to pose any of the health risks that smoking real cigarettes do. Studies worldwide have shown that smokers that are given the opportunity to try e-cigarettes have been successfully cutting down or quitting smoking. The e-cigarettes are used in a manner of inhaling a steamed liquids that are vapor producing mixtures. At nicotine levels equivolent to burning cigarettes. The amount of nicotine and flavorings are not at any carcinogenic levels, such being the case with any burning tobacco cigarette. Statistics are being gathered and recorded by e-cigarette users asking the millions of e-cigarette users, if they have been able to quit actual smoking and 99% or more have a positive response which is life saving and more. All e-cigarette users were heavy or regular smokers who if they haven’t quit altogether 100%, most are nearly quit. They have greatly reduced their smoking and are feeling better and not causing harm to non-smokers. When e-cigarette users who were smokers, can share this incredibly miraculous alternative, openly, in public, these nicotine delivery devices will help more cigarette smokers find this proven safer alternative. They will gain an understanding of what is available to them and be able to ask questions of other e-cigarette users. Imagine the 450,000,000 smokers out there, switching to e-cigarettes. Helping themselves and all of humanity at the same time.

Like many smokers I started in my teens. Peer pressure, both my parents smoked, to be cool with friends or kids, I started. I smoked for forty years, raised a family with two Sons now adults, one is 33 and the other 22. Neither of them smoke, though their Father and I did all through their childhood. The public schools they attended did a great job of educating them about the dangers of smoking. Don’t lose sight of the facts, the numbers of school aged children beginning to smoke have sharply declined! I thank the public educational system as underfunded as it is, they have done an excellent job in reaching the minds of the young, during their childhoods and teen years, instilling a positive direction for most youths.

In my early 20’s in the 1970’s I worked in San Francisco in the financial district. I was sick with a very bad virus, that had become severe bronchitis. I had already been a smoker for many years. My symptoms were complicated further by the irritants of chemically ladened, hot burning tar, carbon monoxide from leaf tobacco cigarettes. I went out for a 15 minute break to the street below and was approached by sales persons offering free sample packs of cigarettes. I remember hardly being able to smoke without profuse coughing and wheezing. I also remember asking the the “Almighty” to please make a cigarette that was safe, I tried switching to lighter cigarette brands, but still coughed. I was tired of feeling ill, and ashamed of myself, because, the “you shouldn’t smoke! attitudes and the scientific data pointing to the dangers of smoking were already known and becoming the values in our society. Now some 40 years later, the answer to my prayer has arrived! E-cigarettes are a miracle for over 10,000,000 and growing numbers of healthier x-smokers.

Since I have been using the e-cigarette, my wheezing is gone, bronchitis attacks are almost none existent. Breathing is better, I am able to exercise and enjoy the smell and taste of foods again. I call that a miracle. I was sick every few months with bronchitis and was well on the way to emphysema at my current age of 59. I no longer crave cigarette smoking as I did, the smell of it alone, sickens me. I have an aversion to the filth and danger and smell of smoking thanks to e-cigarettes. Please don’t demonize e-cigarettes with this Bill. It would be making the only viable safe and affordable alternative to smoking less available to suffering smokers numbering 450,000,000 people in the United States alone. Smokers, who obviously can not quit will not have to die from the diseases related to smoking. We are not drunk drivers, alcohol is far more a threat to society than nicotine (studies show nicotine may actually have health benefits) is or will ever be. Please educate yourselves about the smoking diseases and the comparable health improvements and volumes of e-cigarette users positive experiences. People who have chosen to vape can now afford to, instead of billions of dollars wasted and lives ruined by real smoking. Compare the proven data that is available to us all, and you will have no other choice but to agree, that standing in the way of progress where everyone’s health is at issue is senseless. Please support the right to for American’s to choose a safer alternative to smoking, otherwise, real smoking will continue and it is a undisputed death warrant.

E-cigarettes should not bare the brunt and stigma that real smoking has rightly earned. Real smoking is repugnant and dangerous, it’s a fire burning object, the cause of forest fires and homes burning down. It makes clothing smell, it is messy and very distasteful. It discolors walls and furnishings. It clings to windows and is very obnoxious. Vaping e-cigarettes, does none of the above. If there is anything present in the odor, it is vaguely like an apple or piece of fruit, with absolutely no carbon monoxide, or the 4,000 cancer causing chemicals and tar of real burning cigarettes. E-cigarettes emit a liquid vapor, tested and proven to contain nothing that could harm anyone. There are minute amounts of food grade flavoring and small amounts of food grade vegetable gylcerin or propylene glycol (not in amounts to be compared falsely with anti-freeze which has concentrations in large amounts, not in these minute amounts. Propylene glycol is administered in hospitals, to facilitate breathing apparatus and in e-cigarettes is used in safe dosages that harm no one using the e-cigarette or passively breathing near by. The steam vapor, evaporates, before it can be detected. Unlike cigarettes that have a certain smell that does not dissipate and cannot be disguised a burning cigarette is obviously odorous, foul and lingering, in it’s character.


When I first became interested in using e-cigarettes, thanks to the internet, I found forums with links to studies, and data. I found casaa.org The Consumers Advocate for Smoke-Free Alternatives Association, that is where I was able to inform and educate myself by reading what other ex smokers and knowledgeable experts were sharing openly, to help others like myself find their freedom from the death warrant that smoking real cigarettes is known to be. E--cigarettes are not dangerous! So your Bill does not fit the bill.
