Great comments here. I'm just starting down this road myself, but couldn't be more pleased. I smoked about 1/2 pack a day, and since the day after I got my kit, I've only slipped once, when I was away from the pv (kayaking / snorkeling) for about 4 or 5 hours and panicked a bit.
I agree it's helpful
1) to come here, and see all the success stories and enthusiasts (which is what really "sold" me, by the way -- thanks everyone) and
2) to not to put too much pressure on yourself re: "this is my *last* cigarette, forever!" (Cue scary music). I've got 9/10 of carton laying around untouched. When I slipped, I didn't freak out. It was one cig out of the dozen I would've smoked that day, and it didn't flip any kind of "switch" and make me want to go back. It just wasn't that great.
I give myself "permission" to smoke one someday if I absolutely must, so it's kind of like I'm procrastinating with the pv. "Eh, I'll get to the cig later." And I'm GREAT at procrastinating.
Thing is, I was tired of smoking. I had all the usual addictive behaviors -- situational, with beer or coffee or what not, as a "break," after dinner, etc. But it's such a pain in the neck dealing with all the attendant mess / inconvenience /risk / cost. Dirty ashtrays (which never ceased stinking and grossing me out) fussy lighters, smelly clothes, going outside in the rain to the distant "smoking spot" at work, smelly / dirty car, burn holes in pants, etc., etc., etc. Hated buying them, too, and the fact that a carton of my brand is now $60 in my area didn't help that any.
Every time I hear those cigarettes calling to me, (and they do still call, sometimes) I think about all those drawbacks (and the gigantic health issue, of course) and focus on how clean, tasty, and convenient the pv is. "Smoking" in the car with the windows rolled up?! Pausing in a stairwell, restroom, or what have you instead of taking the March of Shame outside? Staying inside when it's 100 degrees on the porch? Still playing with flavors / nic levels, but I seem to be getting what I need now. Don't know if I want to "vape" forever, but it's such a vast improvement on smoking, and controls the "need" so well that I can't see going back.
