My living room surround amp is actually a 7.1 but I've never used it. Put it on 5.1 when I got it and kept it there. I have one extra JBL speaker I never used. I'd need another one if I want to go to 7.1. And I'd have to wire up which isn't so easy. That's why I haven't done it. Does 7.1 really add anything worthwhile? What sounds do you get out of it? Same as the other two back speakers?

Not much really. I've run the receiver through the different settings and can't really tell when they aren't working. That's the main reason I'm not to bothered by it. My wires are along the wall around the room.

I didn't think 7.1 would be much better than 5.1. Probably why I never bothered with it. My living room backs up to the foyer so it's wide open behind me. I really have nowhere to put the 7.1 speakers much less figure out how to conceal the wires. I got lucky when I bought this house. The previous owner threaded monster wire through all the walls so it was ready to go for 5.1.

Heck I have the option to add two more speakers. Yamaha calls them presence speakers. They would go on the wall behind the TV. That would be 10 speakers.
Good grief!

When it comes time to upgrade I'll have to think about if I really need 7.1. It would be cheaper to just go 5.1 and I'd likely not notice the difference. But then again looking at the Yamaha receivers it would be a tuff call. What I have now is the Yamaha RX-V665. I've liked it from the start and have had no trouble with it. I never use the radio/music things on it.

Sooo.... my AARP card arrived...

I’m fully embracing turning 50 in March. Think I might join AARP and see if I can order off the senior menu at Denny’s.
I take their postage paid return envelope and mail it back to them empty. :)

Some guy on our nextdoor website was selling one of those Yamahas. Looked nice.

I did that with all credit card offers. Since I've frozen my credit records (after the hoohah with the credit bureau a few months ago) I don't get any more. HOORAY! I must have saved at LEAST 2 trees in the Amazon by now, just by doing that.

I’m having a blast with it. Told my girls I can now get the cheap movie tickets and the discounts at grocery stores. I’m pretty sure they’ll tell me no, but I’ll whip out that AARP card and see what happens.

I wouldn't want anything remotely similar to that. Already have a sound bar w/ subwoofer for the TV that I don't even use any more. From the manual, I have an single jack the soundbar is hooked into, and two (red / white) jacks available.
But that's not what I want. Something better than a "boombox" that could stream Pandora, Iheartradio, or other services and not sound weak and tinny would suffice.

One of those aisle boys will show up with his flashlight and a wheelchair and ask if you need help into the theater.

I am at the age where I am often given a senior discount without even asking for it. I guess years behind the wheel, and a white beard & moustache, give the impression that I'm an old fart. And, no, i do not complain when it happens.
But Mamaw is always after me to get my Veterans ID Card. She claims it is accepted in a lot of places.
